We’re Not Music People

April 29th, 2010 @ 3:29 pm by Mrs. Trail Mix

I think the title of this post says it all. Don’t get me wrong, I love music, Mr Trail Mix loves music (I think…) but in no way are we at all into the music “scene”. I’m not gonna lie, most of the time when I read other bees’ posts about lovingly-crafted playlists, I’ve never even heard of most of the bands listed (how embarrassing!).

This could definitely be us… except I actually like country music. And most hip-hop.

We both are obsessed with Dave Matthews Band (seen them in concert at least 8 or 9 times) but other than that, we don’t really have much inspiration to go off of. Even though we have our (AWESOME) band playing at the reception, we still needed two iPod play lists, one for dinner and one for when the band takes their 2nd break.

We sat down to make the playlists but quickly realized that our music collection fell quite short. For the dinner playlist, we were focusing on quieter, “romantic” songs, I guess. Here’s a sampling of the songs that made the cut:

You get the idea—slightly folksy with a little bit of pop and country thrown in for good measure, plus some James Taylor because he’s one of my favorites. For dinner, we’re keeping it light-hearted and low-key.

And here’s a smattering of the songs we put onto the dance playlist for later on in the night when the band takes another break:

All songs we can jump around, sing along and shake our groove thangs to. So, here’s where you dear readers come in. I need suggestions for songs! We have a few more than what’s mentioned here for both of these lists but I’d really appreciate suggestions.

So por favor, help a clueless music-lover out. Can you give me either slower dinner song and/or louder, crazier dancing song suggestions??

What I did was set up a radio station on pandora.com with the type of songs I wanted. I used the songs pandora selected that matched up to the feel I was looking for.

I think I’m very much like you guys when it comes to music. I like music. My fiance likes music. But I NEVER know the names of the bands, artists or songs other bees mention in their posts. I have no clue. So we’re doing a band, and then a spattering of songs in between sets as well. I’m sure some of our music crazy friends might be little disappointed/horrified, but oh well!

For dancing music check out the billboards top 100. Or maybe you can just google a few phrases to see what it spits back for suggestions?

wow I feel like I wrote this post! We are not “music people” either with the exception of Dave Matthews, which we listen to all the time. Choosing the playlist scares the crap out of me because I have no idea what to include! I’m looking at some of the other bees lists thinking” how in the heck do they know all of these bands?!” God I hope my reception doesn’t sound like bingo night at the senior center

Michael Buble or Adele is always great dinner music… Auqalung and Band of Horses are some of my picks for our dinner! Romantic with a beat you can tap your feet to.

I see you and Mr. TM are 26 and 27. What about a throwback to your younger days? The kind of songs your peers will instantly scream “I remember this song!” to… ? Always a hit where I’ve been.

It’s my opinion that no wedding playlist is complete without a little JBJ…”Jon Bon Jovi” for those of you who aren’t as familiar with his work.

I have the opposite problem: I have too many songs for my playlists because we are big music people with pretty diverse tastes. We are going the laptop/iPod route for music and I made separate playlists for cocktails, dinner, cake cutting, dancing, etc and I ended up with like 15 hours of music.

Here are some songs that I came up with off the top of my head…

Slower songs:
One Love- Bob Marley
With a Little Help From my Friends- The Beatles
Love it All- The Kooks
Sweet Disposition- Temper Trap
Love song- 311
Better Together- Jack Johnson
Island in the Sun- Weezer
Heartbeats- Jose Gonzalez

Some upbeat songs:
Bust a Move- Young MC
Ain’t Nothing Wrong with that- Robert Randolph & The Family Band
Candy Girl- New Edition
Shake Your Body- Michael Jackson
Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough- Michael Jackson
Kiss- Prince

Just wanted to say I loved that episode of the office, it was so touching seeing them go off to get married on their own.

Sunrise by Norah Jones would be good for the dinner playlist, and you cna’t go wrong with Don’t Stop Believing by Journey for the party!

I would also suggest using Pandora, Last FM, Lala, or the like. It’ll come up with similar artists for you, and you can sit there and listen to all the songs to see what you like.

Oh man, I’m so glad you posted this! I am SO not a music person either. I mean, I like it, but I do not pay attention to it at all. I NEVER know who the bands are in the music posts!

I plan to put my bestie in charge of playlists… because Brad and I have a strange mash up music style and our mix tapes are always bizarre… my besties mix tapes however are ALWAYS dance-able.

Oh yay, I’m not the only one looking at the indie music and feeling sheepish. :) I personally love all of your picks so far! Can’t wait to see what else you choose.

Well…
The Avett Brothers have some amazing, amazing music … I can’t think of a perfect song right now (January Wedding, as I believe it was Mrs. Moonbeam recommended a long while back is fantastic…but as your wedding’s in June I can understand not wanting to play it).
Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros- Home This could fit in either category, really! They have some other great songs, too that would work well for dinner/slower music.
And my all time favorite to recommend for dance:
Say Hey (I Love You) - Michael Franti! It is soooo perfect.
Also - not sure if you’d like it but I’m glad I Hitched my Applewagon to Your Star by The Boy Least Likely Too is awesome and could go well for dinner.
