We're planning a festive and fun mini-destination wedding in the place where we met: fabulous Pittsburgh, PA! I can't wait to marry the man I love!
About Mrs. Octopus

I loveity-love-love makeup, and always have. Given my super-brokeness, most of the makeup in my current stash is of the $3 easy, breezy, beautiful variety, but I love playing around with it all the same.

(Side note: I think part of being a makeup aficionado is going through some tragic stages. I went through a period during ninth or tenth grade where I wore liquid eyeliner and glitter eyeshadow as part of my regular makeup routine. To school, during the day, every day. Please, somebody out there, console me and tell me I’m not alone!)

Anyway, I was really excited about my makeup trial in Pittsburgh, especially because the artist I was trying had a really nice-looking portfolio. I brought along this photo of my #1 girl crush, Christina Hendricks, who in addition to being a voluptuous bombshell goddess, has coloring pretty similar to mine.

I went in looking like this…

AAAAHHH I am putting this on the Internet for people to look at freely!

And came out like this!

Non-Drugstore-Brand Makeup = LOVE : wedding makeup pittsburgh trial P10303901

Woooo! My eyebrows are a hot mess in this picture! I was waiting until Bridesmaid Erica’s wedding to get them waxed.

Recognize this one?

It didn’t end up looking that much like C-Hen, I don’t think, but not for lack of trying. Julie, the makeup artist, started out with that glam, silvery cat’s-eye thing Christina’s got going on, but I kind of hated it on me, so she added some other shades to soften it up a little. Overall, I really loved what she did, and booked her right there on the spot! It also held up through the entire day and several hours of St. Patrick’s Day festivities with two of our groomsmen later that night, so thumbs up all around!

What look were you going for in your first ideas for makeup? Did you stick to it, or change it up a little?

Haha you’re so not alone on the bad make-up phases. I definitely wore WAY too much make-up when I was 14. So embarrassing thinking about it now!

First of all, what’s your beef with liquid eyeliner and glitter shadow? :)

Second of all, I think your makeup looks fantastic. It really, really brings out your blue eyes.

I think what I like the most about your makeup is that is looks natural and not overdone! Your makeup artist did a great job and the best part is that you still look the same person in your before and after pics. I hate seeing pics where girls go in makeupless and come out looking like an entirely different person, covered in mounds of makeup. Good choice to go with your girl!!

Overall, I think you could use some more makeup on because it looks like it didn’t change much. The only exception to this is that your lip color has changed. The eyes could use some more shadow, unless you are going for the natural look then that is great, but keep in mind that sometime more is better especially in your wedding photos. I’m not much a makeup person myself, but realize that going natural doesn’t always bring out good pictures.

Very pretty! I might do a bit more makeup on the eye, but not the C-Hen corner swoosh.

I had the most fun at a Sephora make-over in Ross Park mall by the Dior consultant! She made me feel beautiful! Definitely worthwhile…

I too went through a bad makeup phase. I wore way too much eyeshadow and eyeliner at 16.

Does anyone remember silver lipstick?? Ughhhh… The one over developed girl with huge boobs in 7th grade wore it every single day to school and sure enough, eeeeeeveryone else followed. I think there might have been black lipliner too. Yes. Black lip liner with silver lipstick. *Cringe!!*

Anyway you look lovely :)

You’re not alone. My friends and I used actual CRAFT glitter on our eyelids. The makeup variety wasn’t chunky enough. It was glued on with vaseline! lol

OH you’re not alone! someone let me do my own make up for my brothers wedding in the 90’s (i was maybe 12 or 13), and now looking back on the pictures seriously makes me cringe. i had bright WHITE, glitter eyeshadow lash line to eyebrow. HOLY CRAP. i know my mom was having a nervous breakdown, but seriously, how could she let me be photographed like that?!

You look beautiful! No lie–the application, shading, etc. are perfect. You look natural with a little bit of oomph and your eyes really pop while your skin looks dewy! Don’t change a thing!

You look so beautiful and totally natural. I also went to my makeup trial with a photo of a movie star with bold eyes but ended up looking like I was about to be in a middle school play; it was pretty scary. I’ve kept the photo to remind myself that I am now a firm believer in looking as much like oneself as possible.

I understand that, my make-up/beauty point person is Jennifer Hudson. I loved her Oscar make-up. I asked my make-up artist to make me up like J Hud. It was a bad move and we went in the opposite direction. The trick is to have enough make-up on that it photographs well but not caked on. You could do more with the eyes because in the pictures it looks plain and a little washed out, unless you want the more natural look.

@kevinandkhou: @LurkMcGurk: @jordynrose: @Imara219: Thanks, and I see what you mean in the photos, but I’m confident about the way she did my eye makeup. There were some other pictures where the definition in my eyes was much more obvious, but they were really awkward-looking photos of me, so I didn’t post them!

@Mrs. Perfume: Thank you! I always admire your makeup in your photos, so I especially appreciate your opinion!

@ValentinaBride: Haaaa! I DO remember the silver lipstick thing, now that you mention it!
@Jillian: Hahaha! Several of my friends went through a phase of wearing brightly-colored mascara (green, purple, etc) which, thankfully, I never gave in to.
@JanieLeigh: I also had a thing for wearing white eyeliner on my bottom lash line only. WTF was I thinking??!
