Mrs. Guinea Pig's Picture
Mrs. Guinea Pig, Baltimore, MD Age and Occupation: 26, PhD student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Operations Director at a non-profit Engagement Date: December 25, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: The Chesapeake Bay Beach Club About Me: I'm a tomboy science nerd whose girly side has made a startling appearance thanks to wedding planning! I love to bake, knit and sew but I also ride a motorcycle (that Mr. Guinea Pig wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole). We live with our three crazy cats and love to read, travel, watch movies, and do home improvement projects together! My parents/family are Canadian but I'm definitely American, although I've lived in 5 different countries, 6 different states, and speak Russian fluently. Mr. GP and I met online (did I mention I'm a scientist?) and had a whirlwind romance - now we can't wait to get married & celebrate with all our friends and family in a blue and yellow waterfront affair!
About Mrs. Guinea Pig

I’m fine.

This is how my sister and I have learned to start conversations on the phone with our mom that might otherwise cause her to freak out and book emergency plane tickets across the country. We’ve both learned this from experience - me, from the time I called her in college, sobbing and incoherent after taking my friend to the hospital, and all I could get out was, “I’m at the hospital.” Let’s just say panic ensued until she realized I personally was not injured or in danger. From then on, I have been instructed to always start a conversation where I am not in danger, but could sound like it, with “I’m fine.” :D

Earlier this week, I drove to work(/school - same thing for me) at about the same time I usually do, the same route I always take. I was 30 seconds from the parking garage, and needed to make one last left turn from a one-way street to be on the garage street. The left hand turn lane was open in front of me, I flipped on my signal. As I approached the light turned green, so I started to turn.

Then I noticed that the school bus that was in the middle lane (to my right, with no turn signal on) had also decided to turn left. At that moment all I thought was, ‘You have got to be kidding me.’

School Bus: 1, Miss GP's Car: 0 : wedding baltimore health Showdow1 showdow

(Lumbering school bus vs. my regular old car (not my actual car, but the same make/model))

The bus cut the corner and crunched into my car, shoving it into the curb on the left, then proceeded to scrape along the entirety of the side of the bus, pulling my fender out, the right lower grill off, and crushing some stuff on the front right of the car.

The crunching noise was by far the worst part of the whole thing, and I just kept thinking, ‘Seriously?! I’m supposed to be getting married soon, and I’m going to be crushed by a school bus?! THIS is how things end?! No. I don’t think so.’ Obviously I am completely fine and overall damage wasn’t that bad, it really was just the sound that was terrible (metal on metal is not pleasant!), but I’m a little embarrassed to admit that it was the, ‘I’m supposed to get married soon!’ part that kept running through my head.

It feels silly to say this out loud (/write it down), but lately I had been making a conscious effort to be more ’safe’. I’ve stopped riding my motorcycle for now:

School Bus: 1, Miss GP's Car: 0 : wedding baltimore health Me Moto1 me_moto

(me on my beloved motorcycle, last year)

I’ve stopped doing my usual 5 mph (at least) over the speed limit, I’ve tried to stop checking my phone while at stoplights (old habits die hard), and I’m more careful in lab and at home around sharp objects like razor blades and knives.

I do this because I am accident-prone, and I’d rather not hobble down the aisle or have some horrible gash across my arms. Miss Fro Yo mentioned this same idea just before her wedding too, so I must not be the only one who’s worried about this, right?! But despite my best efforts to maintain an accident-free life, it seems that accidents are just drawn to me. :) I’ve decided to take it as an early ’here’s what goes wrong’ event. We are now one car short, which will soon cause trouble when my family comes into town, but if this is the worst that happens, I will consider myself lucky!

It’s also made me realize that maaaaybe I should just be taking these normal precautions in day-to-day life anyway, you know? I realize that getting married is a special time and the wedding’s this ’day’ that’s taken over my current life, but… don’t I want to be able to enjoy the marriage after that day, too? Shouldn’t I do my best to stay healthy and alive the rest of the time, too? What are reasonable risks to take? Do I sell my motorcycle? Do I stop eating everything that’s bad for me and probably clogging my arteries (OK I probably should do that)? It’s gotten me thinking!

Have you made any safety-related changes because of your upcoming wedding? Has your wedding made you realize you should make some changes in your life?

I also have changed not because of the wedding, but because now that I have a clear future mapped out in front of me, and I’ll be starting my own family, I don’t want a stupid decision to cut my life short and not allow me to live those moments. So it’s not for the wedding day, but for the marriage/future in general.

I speed a lot less now…

Oh my gosh! I’m glad to hear your okay. And, since my wedding is over a year out, so far I haven’t made any changes, but I suspect I will soon, since I just stubbed my toe a week ago, and then ran my shin into the corner of the coffee table yesterday. Hehe, yes, I am special :-)

Glad to hear you’re OK. I had a city bus v. bike incident earlier this year (I was on the bike side). Much like yours it was pretty minor and I was totally fine, but when I called my mom to tell her about it I had to choose my words carefully. No one likes to hear that their daughter was at the receiving end of a bus. Hope the car damage is easily fixable.

First off, glad you are okay! It can be scary. I had a frightening run in with a semi last month (I’m fine - semi that was doing something it shouldn’t have been doing….you suck!) that certainly got the better of my car and my nerves. I am so on board with safety precautions! I think about that too. Not just saftey precautions to be sure I make it to & through my wedding day alive, healthy and injury free….but also my marriage. I am far more concerned about being alive and healthy to enjoy a long, happy life together. This means that I refuse to text and drive, or even take my eyes off the road (I REALLY try hard on this one), and even though we still chow down on dominoes delivery like hunrgy wolves…I also feel a twinge of “that probably wasn’t the best idea” after it. My fiance is diabetic…so I really worry about his health. But yeah, weddings and marriages do make you reconsider what is safe and good.

Wow. That really sucks. That could have ended pretty badly but I’m glad you’re not hurt! I had to stop texting while driving because I weave all over the road. Lol.

glad to hear you’re fine! ironic, how you stopped riding your bike only to have an accident in your car. but you know, life always rears its head at the most inopportune times to keep us on our toes. at least it was only the car that was hurt!

I had flooding/car issues right before the wedding too. I know exactly what you mean about being extra careful. My friends started to mock me by saying, “Not before the wedding!” because I would decline doing things like running down the sand dunes at Kitty Hawk, skiing, moving heavy furniture down narrow staircases, etc. It worked though! I had all limbs in use for the wedding :) Sorry to hear about your car - stay safe!

Glad you are okay!

I don’t think I changed my behavior much for the wedding (I’m a bit of a worrier already), but I DEFINITELY have been giving Mr. S a harder time about driving too fast *since* the wedding. I’m too happy! I want everyone to stay safe!

Yikes! Glad you’re okay! My uncle was hit by a school bus when he was riding his motor cycle a few years ago, and while he was injured, it was nothing near as bad as it could have been. He was incredibly lucky. Still, it’s really scary stuff, and I’m so glad you weren’t hurt!

I’m glad you’re okay! Lately, I’ve been thinking the same things you have, like “hmm, maybe I shouldn’t tweet and drive.” Like you said, it’s probably good to do things like this all the time, but it’s definitely at the forefront of my mind right now!

Glad you’re ok!

I didn’t want to play with my softball team for two weeks before my wedding because I’m so afraid of getting hit in the face with a ball and having a shiner. Turned out that two weeks is playoffs, and my team can’t be short a female player, so I had to bow out the entire season if I didn’t want to play.

Yikes! I am happy to hear that you are ok. I, on the other hand, have not made any safety changes. I still speed, I still ride my road bike, and I still run with scissors (ok…just kidding about the last one).
