Cake Thoughts

April 30th, 2010 @ 2:57 pm by Mrs. Frog

I’m not a cake person. There, I said it.

These days everyone is looking for ways to make their wedding unique and put their own stamp on it—one thing I feel compelled to discuss is my complete obsession with the idea of scrapping the cake altogether and moving to Paris so I can have a croquembouche.

Is that not the cutest and most delicious thing you’ve ever laid your eyes on? I mean, how can that not be tasty?

Cake is pretty, yes… but croquembouche is sugary goodness, not to mention, very fun to say. It almost reminds me of monkey bread—anyone ever had that? I swear it’s laced with crack—monkeybread, that is… after my first time (that sounds so dirty), I literally had dreams about it. It’s THAT good.

Go get some. Seriously. Is it hot in here? Whew.

Okay another idea (and probably the most realistic in our case) is the rustic pie route. I do happen to love the backyard look of a table of homemade pies—you still get to “cut the cake” but you can avoid the icing coma that comes along with cake. Although, if your beloved decides to smear said pie in your face, that could create quite a mess. Note to self.

Check out this adorable pie set-up thanks to Lyndsey Hamilton Events:

The pie table is definitely my front runner, but I may need to continue thinking about this. In the meantime, feel free to send samples.

How about you, are you a cake person?

OMG, for the love of all things wonderful, do the croquembouche. It is my biggest regret in the whole world that we did cake (and got a cake wreck) instead of this!

I’m such a cake girl. But I was tempted by the rustic pie route because it actually fits with my theme better than a cake. My sweet tooth won out though, and we’re having a cake =)

We’re not huge cake people. But we love donuts. So we’re having lots of cake stands made from antique china and candle holders that will hold LOTS of flavors of donuts from a local bakery.

I don’t care for cake all that much either. It’s just so sugary and sweet. However, my mother had to have a big cake to the point where she paid for it just so I’d give in. So cake it is, for my budget’s sake!

Our favorite dessert is chocolate cream pie so we are having that instead of cake. We may still have a tiny cake to cut into for the whole cake cutting part just because the pie might be a bit to messy.

My fiance and I are definitely not cake people, either (which morally offends many of our friends and family). Both the pie and croquembouche sound great! For us, in lieu of cake we’re going to be having Rice Krispie treats! Our wedding is 1940’s inspired and since the treats were invented then, it ties in really well! I think it’ll be awesome, and quite cost effective at that.

I love that thing although I have no idea how it tastes. We are not cake people either so we are having a dessert bar with shooters, rice krispies, cookies, cupcakes, etc…

I initially wasn’t a cake person, but after a couple cake tastings - I was hooked and can’t wait to eat our cake again!

I’m making monkey bread for my fiance’s birthday tomorrow! YUM YUM YUM!

(Yes, I realize that this does not answer your question… but I also get overly excited about monkey bread)

I’m totally not a cake person. Someone who I know had wheels of cheese stacked on each other for their wedding cake. It went down a storm!

I am a “wince” cake hater…

We’re going the rice crispy treat route…shaped and decorated like a traditional wedding cake.

Yum!

OMG, croquembouche (i didn’t know that was the name until Mrs. Perfume, thank you!) is so delishous. MMMMM. I didn’t even use to really like cream puffs until I had that.

My fiance and I aren’t cake people, but he is obsessed with the cookies that they sell at Ghirardelli stores. We found out it they are actually supplied by a company called Carol’s Cookies out of Illinois, so we are ordering 10 dozen assorted cookies instead of a cake. Each cookie weighs half a pound, so we can’t wait to see the looks on our guest’s faces when they are placed on their tables!

No fancy tiered wedding cake for us! We’re going the dessert bar route instead, with pies, cheesecakes, and other sweets instead.

I like your ideas! We are having a small fancy cake for the ceremony that we are making together (he’s a chef and I love to bake)…and then having a dessert buffet with a chocolate fountain (with strawberries, pound cake, marshmellows, pretzel rods etc.) and lots of mini cupcakes, cookies and pastries. I like that we won’t have to have someone cut and serve the cake, everything will be portable when people want it…and those who don’t won’t have to wait for cake to get up and dance! Best of luck with your decision!

We’re not having cake, we’re from Maine so we’re doing whoopie pies instead in various flavors. Can’t wait!!
