You know, vendors that are friends?
The funny thing is, I was not friends with any of these peeps until AFTER I booked them. I have a serious love affair with my vendors. And, I love to stay up-to-date on their lives. So, for all obvious reasons, I am friends with all of them on Facebook.
So, what prompted this bond? I love making new friends. I also love good people. And, I love going out to eat!
Our photographer? She (as in Lisa Hessel) is an absolute doll. And, while I don’t share the same love of the TV show Lost as she does (please don’t hate me), we DO share the same love for TV. As in, we LOVE it (you can refer to her recent blog post for proof). Not to mention that she is an honestly good and down-to-earth person, who has a huge sweet tooth (like I do).
Watching reality TV with your FI, eating ice cream sundaes > Working out, multi-tasking, and crossing things off your “to do” list
Caring about wedding details that some might consider “ridiculous” > Apathy
Hiring someone to finish a project for you > Feeling overwhelmed at taking too many DIY projects on
Starting dance lessons with your FI (stepped on toes and all!) > Doing the awkward middle-school-sway
Wearing a pair of super comfortable shoes that are cute > Wearing ridiculously fabulous shoes that kill your feet and crush your soul
Doing something you’ve seen 1,000 times on wedding blogs because it fits your personality > Doing something “different” that doesn’t fit your personality whatsoever

Well, hello, hive. How have you been? It’s nice to see you again. We’ve been uber-busy training for a marathon (using this training plan from the magazine I work for), getting ready for Mr. Cowboy Boot’s show this October (he’s an oil painter) at this gallery, and most of all, moving! No, we didn’t purchase a home (I wish!) but we moved into a great two-bedroom, unfurnished place.
We’ve lived in partially-furnished homes for the past three years so it’s amazing to finally feel like we have a fresh canvas we can make our own. While we’re not completely finished decorating, we’re close, so I thought I’d share our new home with you, here in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The best part? It’s on three enclosed acres and comes with a dog door, so you know our pups—who graced our Thank You cards—are smiling from ear-to-ear.

In the world of crazy wedding acronyms, MUA stands for Make Up Artist. Whenever I see this acronym, I can’t help but imagine an evil person going, MUAHAHAHAHAHA!!! And with how high the prices are for bridal makeup, I wouldn’t be surprised if there are some makeup artists out there muahahaha-ing at how stupid/silly brides are to cough up these fees!
OK, OK, I know that some consider makeup an art form and that people need to make a living – perhaps I’m being a little harsh. But seriously, $1250* for wedding hair and makeup? Am I missing something?

I realize that many of you are planning honeymoons with more than 12 hours notice. These tips and book reviews are for you. I’ve broken down the advice into 3 sections: Guide Book Reviews, General Tips, and Budget. If you are going on a surprise honeymoon like we ended up doing, then my advice is much simpler:

I bought my copy when I studied abroad in 2003. In a panicked search as we packed the morning of take off, I found it buried in one of my moving boxes. It was a honeymoon day miracle.

The Story

I’ve previously written about my attempt to make a beautiful, Martha Stewart ring pillow. At least, the flower part.
The flower still isn’t finished, but I did finish the part of the project I totally understand: the pillow!
Sure, I could have just bought a pillow somewhere, but I was at Jo-Ann fabrics with Mr. Oyster, when he mentioned the remnants section. Despite my owning a sewing machine and actually knowing how to sew, Mr. Oyster is the one that visits Jo-Ann quite a bit, usually for his art projects or for his students. How could I not have remembered the remnants?! And so, this is the story of how I made a ring pillow for about $5.
I found a 23″ scrap of some cheap muslin, bought a little bag of fiberfill, and scraps of some beautiful mauve pin-tucked satin. And, the remnants were half off that day!
The pillow itself was the easiest part.

On a trip to Party City a while back, I picked up this guestbook for $15…

It seemed a little plain but I knew I could add a few decorative touches to it.
Bellamiceli is selling 24 centerpieces. The 28″ frosted Eiffel Tower vases contain about 480 white ostrich feathers. She’s asking $1000 but will take the best offer.

What’s more exciting than planning a wedding? Planning a life together!
For a year and a half, Mr. Starfish and I have been planning our dream wedding. I have been oohing and ahhing over wedding dresses, venues, photography blogs, wedding blogs, all things nautical, cakes, stationery, DIY projects, decor, and everything that goes into planning a wedding. I didn’t think anything could be more fun.
Then, about a quarter through our engagement, Mr. Starfish and I started to look for a house. We looked for over a year before finding our dream home. To be honest, it was exhausting and I much preferred planning the wedding, until we found our dream home. Now my mind has shifted from wedding plans to life plans.*
I can’t believe that I have been blogging for this long and haven’t blogged about Mr. Dolphin’s proposal. Just to be clear, before Mr. Dolphin proposed, we had talked about getting married. So, it wasn’t an absolute surprise—which I believe engagements shouldn’t ever really be. Before getting engaged, we talked about what we wanted for our future… how many kids (he wants 3… I want a soccer team), where we wanted to live, what we wanted to do with our lives, etc… I mean… we had a lot of time to talk about this. Mr. Dolphin and I had been dating for 5 years before we got engaged!
But first… a little history
Mr. Dolphin and I in middle school band
Please ignore the big hair… everyone has an awkward stage… most people don’t broadcast it on the internet but I love you all too much to keep this baby hidden
We started dating in our junior year of high school but have known each other since 3rd grade.
Stage 6! Brooklyn in the houuuuuse!
Brooklyn Bridge - Bonnie Tsang Photography
After much debating and pro / con lists, Mr. Lovster and I ultimately couldn’t resist Stage 6 and all it had to offer. In addition to the elegant and modern setting, there was this:
I’m laying it all out on the table. I’ve changed my engagement ring setting TWICE. Yea, that’s right. I’m an insensitive, unsentimental jerk-face. Not a jerk, a jerk-face.
I know there are people who have the perfect ring, their dream ring, or their ring is juts the best ring ever because it’s their engagement ring. But what do you do when you don’t like your ring, or maybe you just want to change it?

Honey, I know I said I wanted Cartier… but this is not what I had in mind.
I’m one of those people. I’m like the ocean—ever moving/changing. And if you wanna be on it, you gotta roll with it. If you don’t, I will swallow you whole and no one will ever see you again until your bloated body floats somewhere downstream. Me, master of imagery. Am I attached to my ring?

Once we locked down Heinz Chapel as our ceremony site, I assumed that we would create our block of hotel rooms at the Holiday Inn directly across the street.

See that awesome location? It’s less than a five-minute walk to Heinz Chapel! Also, it’s a very, very easy walk to many great attractions in the lively Oakland/University of Pittsburgh area, including the University’s main building, the Cathedral of Learning, the super-awesome Carnegie Museums of Art and History, and lots of great, busy bars and restaurants, including the Holy Grail of Pittsburgh foods, Primanti Brothers’ sandwiches:
