About Mrs. Pin Cushion

After a few lengthy discussions with some girlfriends, we’ve developed a theory. Margaritas may or may not have been involved during the theorizing process (don’t worry, we’ll be sure to list Chevy’s as a co-author if we get published). Our theory is:

The length of a courting couple’s engagement shall be directly proportional to the length of said courting couple’s relationship, as demonstrated in the graph below:

(Un-) Proven Theory: A Direct Relationship : wedding oakland relationships Screen+shot+2010 03 01+at+10.13.29+PM

Created by moi on Excel (I know, I’m blown away too)

In other words (that aren’t as British sounding), the longer a couple’s been together, the longer they’ll be engaged.

And vice versa; the shorter the relationship at the time of the proposal, the shorter the engagement period will be. We developed this groundbreaking theory based on very extensive research and vigorous scientific observation (or perhaps by gossiping about our own and our friends’ relationships [no, it’s definitely the scientific thing]).

Has anyone seen our theory in action in their own relationship, or in their friends’ relationships? Or does anyone want to challenge the theory? (We dare you!)

I’m agreeing with you! I’ve been with my FH for 8 years (or 5, depending on who’s counting and the factors they use, and if they understand math, and the space - time continuum). But anyway, we will be engaged for like 22 months. So yes, I’m with you on this theory. And I think my comment shows I’m totally into science, math, and anything researchy.

LOL I think it’s probably generally true. But my FI and I have been together for just a bit over 1 year, and our engagement will likely be about 3 years. :P

I kind of agree. My guy and I were together for about a year when we got engaged and our engagement length is almost exactly one year!

I think I’ve seen this be the total opposite. My friends who have been together the longest will be engaged the shortest, and we have been engaged the longest as far as being together. We’ve been engaged for a longer period of time than we were un-engaged. (If that makes any sense?)

miss scissors we have been engaged longer than we were dating too.
[8 months dating, 14 months engaged, 3 months till we're married]

That’s how our relationship has been - together 5 1/2 years at time of engagement, will be engaged about 2.5 years.

We’re kind of the opposite. Our engagement will be one month longer then the amount of time we dated before the engagement.

Ha! I love it. Good theory girls! We dated about 3 years and our engagement will last 6 months. Seems like we are your perfect example.

I would think it would be completely opposite. It would be most ideal to have a long engagement if you’ve been dating a short time to be sure that they’re “the one”. Longtime couples probably don’t need all that time unless they’re planning a blowout event and need time for logistics and saving up, no? Just a thought!

Wow! This is totally true! We’ve been together 2.5 years, and our engagement is 9 months! Our friends have been together for about 6 or 7 years, and their engagement was about 2 years! Good work, ladies!

I totally agree with this theory!! From what I’ve seen it’s pretty accurate (at least in my area). By the time of our wedding we will have been dating 6 years and engaged for 2. The same kind of thing goes for my other friends. My aunt and uncle dated for only three months and had a really short engagement. haha I love this post! ( :

Sorry, I break your theory too. We were dating for 27 months and engaged for 24 months and (five days).

Meanwhile, my friend dated about two years and nine months, and their engagement lasted only seven months.

I think we’re a counter example? Engaged for 10months, dating for 8 years. Oof!

I’m going with those that think it’s the opposite. I think the longer you’ve been dating, the more anxious you are to tie the knot. That’s the case for us anyways. We dated exactly 1 week before celebrating our 3 year anniversary and we will be engaged for only 8 months, for a total of 3 years and 8 months (duh, lol).

We definitely are in a hurry to get married, and get onto doing things that married couples do. FYI we’re one of those couples “waiting” until we’re married. Bring on June 19th!!! :)

Hahaha we tick this box, anyhoo! We’re together since Jan 2000, we got engaged in Jan 2007! I think perhaps if you’ve been together ages anyway, maybe there’s not as much… urgency?!

i’m not even on the chart!

we’re an odd couple though… he proposed after 5 weeks… i knew we were meant to be together forever after 4 weeks, he knew after 1 week!

our engagement is much longer than our relationship prior, though. we’ll have been engaged 7 months, 4 days when we get married. =D

We were together a year and a half when he proposed and our engagement will be 2.5 years lol so maybe we’re in the middle lol.

I’m going to challenge ;)

We’ve been dating for just about 6.5 years and we’re having a short engagement (3.5 months). Whereas, my other friends that have been dating for less time (2 years or so) are having longer engagements (e.g. 2+ years).
