Mrs. Taco's Picture
Mrs. Taco, San Francisco Age and Occupation: 29, writer/editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 37, editor Engagement Date: May 13, 2009 Wedding Date: August 2010 Venue: The Green Room at the War Memorial Veterans Building About Me: I like laughing and talking with good friends over good food and good drink, be it wine, cocktail, or brew. I write and edit things for fun and profit, but I rarely "write" these days without a keyboard and high-speed internets. Favorites include Mr. Taco, my Boston terrier, San Francisco, getting out of town, and the Roaring ’20s. I was kind-of planning a wedding since roughly 2006, when I discovered "Whose Wedding Is It Anyway?" on the WE channel. I ran and didn't look back with a theme I called "urban vintage," and it culminated in the most magical day a taco could ask for.
About Mrs. Taco

All You Need is Love

May 2nd, 2010 @ 3:00 pm by Mrs. Taco

Our wedding venue is across the street from San Francisco City Hall, one of my favorite buildings in town. I ride by it almost every day, and I always pause to take it in. Here’s what it looks like at night from our venue’s street level:

All You Need is Love : wedding legal relationships san francisco Cityhal

Sure, it’s a government building filled with DMV-reminiscent lines and red tape, just like any other city hall. But this red-tape machine was also the site of some infamous events. In 1978, Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk were shot and killed here by another supervisor, Dan White. (Milk, the Oscar-winning movie about Milk’s political career, activism, and assassination, is a great watch). Riots later broke out over White’s lenient sentencing, and many people and police were injured outside as a result. The building got tore up, too.

With the good comes the bad, though. For every terrible thing that happens here, great things happen, too.

At various points in 2004 and 2008, everyone was allowed to say their I dos, decades after Milk fought so hard for equal rights. But after Prop. 8 passed in 2008, “everyone” wasn’t everyone anymore. This ad below from the Courage Campaign came out shortly afterward. It’s pretty self-explanatory, and it still gets me every time. Some of this is in San Francisco:

“Free to be me!” should be written on all of our driver’s licenses and our Board of Supervisors could be a United Colors of Benetton ad. Is this wonderful? Definitely. Can our SF-ness go over the top? Absolutely, and some of the parodies come dangerously close to real life. But with the good comes the bad, like I said. SF isn’t perfect, and neither are we, neither is our wedding, and neither is our relationship or yours.

Not that long ago, the interracial Tacos would have been denied a marriage license, and it’s a sad reality that some committed couples are still on the shit end of that stick. As excited as we are to get our license in this very building, I think often about many people who can’t. But if there’s anywhere in the world more perfect for great things and great starts, it’s here.

That video is great-it got me. We’re celebrating our one year anniversary in San Fran (I’ve ALWAYS wanted to visit!) on the 40th anniversary of the Gay Pride Parade! (Purely coincidence, but it will be quite a day!)

We’re planning to donate money to LGBTQ rights groups after our wedding. We want EVERYONE to be able to be as happily married as we plan to be. Thanks for this post!

Oh gosh, that video had tears rolling down my face. From one Californian in an interracial relationship to another, lets hope we keep moving forward towards equality for all!

Here, here, Ms. Taco. A friend of mine, married her partner in 2001 but they made it legal right in that very building, SF City Hall in 2008.

That video is great. Thanks for sharing.

Love that video! As depressing as the gay-marriage impasse is (and it is very depressing!), it is kind of incredible how far we have come in the last 10 years. I can’t imagine the marriage equality rights movement having any kind of traction in the ’80s or even ’90s, so the fact that we’ve come at least a little ways in such a short time is what I come back to when I get enraged that things aren’t yet the way I would like them to be. We’re going to get there, and in 20 years, we’ll look back and think how crazy it was that it took as long as it did.

This video makes me cry every time I watch it. Thanks so much for posting this beautiful post, and reminding us that equality is much more important than the shade of bridesmaids dresses, letterpress invitations, and bathroom baskets. Thanks again!

I’m teary - my soon to be SIL wants to marry her girlfriend, and she’s up against this. I don’t understand why everyone shouldn’t have the chance to be happy.

Thanks for posting :)

taco, that just made me bawl. my partner and i were wed in SF at city hall in august 2008, and now we are planning a ceremony for our freinds and family to attend. to me, the word marriage is just a word, but the rights are the issue….thanks for remembering there is a whole subset of people who can’t get married!

Great building, incredible video, and very important reminder that Civil Rights are denied to so many. Thanks for a fantastic post!

I have the same sentiments exactly. San Francisco is my city (well, I went to high school there) and I was so proud in 2004, and so bummed in 2008.

I rarely post but wanted to share that I am also getting married at the Green Room also in August! =) I saw your City Hall pick and immediately thought of the Green Room. I just moved to the city to start a grad program and quickly fell in love with it. Lot of history and great post!

It’s nice to see another bride at the same location. I think it’s just beautiful!

Lovely post! I hope soon that the whole nation has the right to choose who they want to marry! Seems like in this day and age it shouldn’t even be a question, crazy how long it is taking to truely make everyone equal.

Great post! I completely agree, and it makes me sad to think about people who can’t be married because of a stupid law that was decided by people who it doesn’t even impact.
