I Don’t Like Bustles

May 3rd, 2010 @ 11:23 am by Mrs. Seashell

There. I said it. I think they’re totally weird.

I always assumed I’d bustle my wedding dress because, well, that’s what you do. But I never liked it. It’s like you take this gorgeous dress and make this low artificial wedgie so it doesn’t drag on the floor all night.

However, recently I saw pictures of a friend’s wedding where she had a bustle alternative.

(Yes!) It appears she had a loop sewn inside the bottom of her dress which she could lift for dancing and climbing stairs, but could be let go to show her full dress at any time.

What do you think? I could see it not being the most convenient option, but my argument is that it shows off the beauty of the dress.

Are you going to bustle?

My mom did this for one of my prom dresses that had a train. It worked well for that night; kept my dress from dragging while we danced and walked, but I could take pictures and show off my mom’s and my handy work. Though I am not sure that it will work for every type of dress. For instance, if the dress is really heavy, this might be more uncomfortable. Similarly, if you have a mermaid dress, not sure if this would work. But for an A-line that isn’t super heavy, it would probably be fine.

I will be bustling, but my dress is light…I kind of love the wristlet option, actually - very old fashioned but a chic alternative

I cut off the train on my dress for that very reason. However, if you want to keep the train, I would bustle it. Perhaps one of the under bustles for a more simple look? Carrying your dress looks cute, but I have to wonder how practical it is for when you’re dancing.

I think that the wrist option is a cool look but I know that it would bug the hell out of me after the first hour or so.

I opted for a side bustle. The way my dress is designed it all gathers to one side so The bustle is going to be on the opposite side of the gather to even out the dress. It’s a nice alternative because I don’t like the look of a french bustle on me.

I noticed when trying on dresses that a lot of designers are putting this wristlet on the dresses anyway just because of this trend. I think I’m going to go with a bustle though. My dress has pickups so the bustle won’t really be that noticeable.

Can you have the bustle hooks added just in case? The loop might be exhausting on your arm after a few hours of dancing.
I went with pics of the bustles I liked AFTER two failed bustle appointments. Cutting my train would cost about $600 because of my lace detail so that wasn’t an option for me.

I hate bustles, too. I’m just getting the whole train lopped off of my dress.

I am bustling, but I have a cathedral length satin train, so it was pretty much that, or choosing a different dress.

I’m bustling my dress as I think it would be too heavy to “carry” around all night and then to bend back over to pick it up each time I drop it.

That loop is actually already on most dresses that are racked because it is how they keep the train from sitting in a pile in the bottom of the bag: the loop gets hooked on the hanger. I considered doing the loop-wrist thing for awhile, but I found that it pulled the dress in a weird way that I didn’t really like. The bustling actually looked a lot better.

didn’t want a train, didn’t want the loop thing (it’s frequent here in the UK), and have had the train cut off (like others!) - picking it up on Saturday : )

I did the wristlette thing, though I modified it. My bridesmaids made it so it would loop around my elbow instead of the wrist, that way it was always hanging at pretty much the same length whether my arm was bent or not. When you have it on your wrist you have to have your arm bent to keep it off the floor.

I had a very light dress (a destination dress actually) so it worked, I don’t think it would be a great choice for a heavier dress.

I think I would be totally annoyed having the bottom of my dress attached to my wrist, but thats just me….I really enjoy busting moves on the dance floor and I think that’d get in my way! That being said, I agree that bustles can look kind of weird - fortunately my dress has layers on the skirt, and the way it bustles just tucks things under so that it looks like there are fewer layers - it looks really natural, like the dress was made that way. The train is SO beautiful, but for dancing purposes, I’m glad to have a nice bustle =)

I think bustles are horrible looking too!

My bustle looked horrible so we are shortening the train on my dress for a more simple bustle… I think it was a good move! The bustle just looks too fussy on most dresses!

I don’t like bustles either. For the most part, they make me nervous. I’ve seen some where it looks like the poor bride has gone potty in her dress. Not awesome.

I have no idea what I’m doing re: bustling. I am pretending it’s not gonna happen.

I’m all about the bustle. If you get a good seamstress, he/she should be able to make you a bustle that you will love just as much as you love the dress when it’s not bustled. A really good seamstress should be able to make it so it looks like the dress was designed to be that way.

I hate bustles. And I hate the inflated charge that comes with getting a bustle put on your dress. It’s just a few buttons!! I have a “sweep train” on my dress, which is still longer than I remembered when I ordered my dress originally. I have a little hoop, like the dress in the post, but gave in an had my FSIL sew in a very simple bustle just in case I want to use it.
