Pete and Repete Were Sitting in a Boat.

Pete fell out. Who was left?

rings

{ Tiffany & Co. }

Last October, we thought we had picked out our wedding bands. Fast forward a few months, and I started having major doubts. It is important to us that our rings not be apart of the overall wedding budget—i.e. we each want to personally pay for each others’ rings. My art-hippie-student-self can’t afford to drop $2,000 on a band, and I wasn’t keen on the idea of begging my better half to spend that much on a band if I were only able to afford a quarter of that price. So, it was back to the drawing board.

Because Tiffany & Co. has little-to-no white gold wedding bands, I knew we would need to meander away from our jewelry mecca. Having our bands in platinum, especially his, jacks the price up astronomically, so white gold it is. After countless frustrating Saturdays filled with rings that we were “meh” over, we decided on two bands from Mayors & Birks.

rings2w

{ Birks }

They were white gold, half the price of the Tiffany rings, and very pretty. My band was a little “squared” in comparison to my engagement ring, but it still looked very nice next to it. “Very nice” and “pretty” and other things I told myself about the ring started to wear off—I realized that I was ambivalent about a ring that Mr. Scissors would be spending a whole heckuvalotta dough on. Make no mistake, the ring is wonderful, but it just didn’t feel 100% right. Insert some bridal “you know when it’s the one” cliche phrases, and you’ll know where I stand reasoning-wise. It just wasn’t… there.

Enter serendipity, a random Google search, and a ring that I fell head-over-heels in love with—both in looks and price.

hellolo

{ Whiteflash }

3mm width? Check. White gold? Check. Way under $1,000? Check. Sparklers? Check. More diamonds and higher weight than the previous choice? Double check. Comfort fit? Check. HELLO, WINNER!

Unfortunately for our heroes, both of the rings cannot be purchased at Whiteflash, because Mr. Scissors has giant hands. Whiteflash only makes their mens’ rings up to a size 10. (I should note that it is not unfortunate that Mr. Scissors has giant hands. I am quite a fan of his large-handedness. Sexy and whatnot…) I’ve gotten over my “OUR RINGS HAVE TO BE FROM THE SAME PLACE OMG!” weirdness, and so his ring will be coming from the lovely folks over at Blue Nile.

WB36400

{ Blue Nile }

6mm, white gold, comfort fit, way under $1,000, and comes in Mr. Scissors’ ring size. We are big fans.

So there you have our probably-entirely-too-long-winded-nobody-really-cares “finding the bands” story. From start to finish it has taken eight months of looking, deciding, whining, and mind-changing, but we’re ending up with rings we both love and can afford. Moral of the story? If you’re having trouble finding something that fits your taste AND budget, keep on truckin’, and hopefully you’ll find something fabulous and affordable.

How did you approach ring shopping, and how did you decide on your bands? Was finding the perfect pair as easy as pie or a lot of lather-rinse-repeat-back-to-the-drawing-board?

    White Flash is the best! We got my engagement ring and both of our bands from there! And the men’s bands do come larger than size 10, you just need to call them! My husband’s is a size 11. Yay White Flash!

    I’m so glad you found something you loved equally! Is your e-ring white gold as well? If its platinum you may want to reconsider as the two metals will wear very differently, but you may be okay with that :)

    @samkatyac: Ah, good to know! :) I’m also glad that you had a good experience with Whiteflash.

    @Mrs. Gloss: My engagement ring is sterling, so it’s all gonna wear a whole lot differently. :) We’ll see how it goes.

    Thank you QVC “Diamonique” for supplying me with a $60 white gold eternity band that matches my (real) engagement ring beautifully. We’re dealing with the stand in’s until everything from the wedding and the new house are paid off.

    I kind of couldn’t believe how easy our wedding band selection went. On one of our rare trips back to see the family on the east coast, we waltzed into FMIL’s jewelry store, I tried on one ring and didn’t like it, one more ring and fell in love, FI tried on like three rings and gave his seal of approval to the final one, and we were done. Seems crazy to spend so little time on something we’ll be wearing forever, but when you know you know. Congrats on finding yours!

    I’m an Etoile girl. Originally I only wanted the band and NOT a separate engagement ring. But then my husband (FI at the time) and a very astute sales girl at Tiffany’s insisted that it looked much better with an Etoile e-ring sitting on top of it. :) Each girl’s priorities are different though… I had a very inexpensive dress and invitations so that we could have live music and Tiffany bands. To each her own!

    I bought my FH’s ring from a completely different place as well! I got him a tungsten ring, so it had to be ordered online. He also has massive fingers. Not sure what the American equivalent is, but he’s an Australian Z+2!!

    Easy as pie! We both liked the same look, tried some on in person in the jewelry district, then bought ours online. tadaaah!

    We got my band at Jared’s, who I would not recommend at all. The diamonds keep falling out and their customer service sucks. We got my husband’s band at titaniumkay.com and his has been perfect. Plus it was only $100.

    I will have to check out Whitefish. Our bands are not going to end up coming from the same place, but I am ok with that.

    This is why buying jewelry can be so frustrating. When we first shopped for rings, we went to a brand name jeweler, and were told we’d be spending about $2,500 for what we wanted. We just assumed that was reasonable and were ready to pay for it. Then my husband met a client at work who worked in a family-owned jewelry store and told us to swing by. He gave us what we wanted (almost the exact same designs as the brand name store) for under $1,000. Tiffany carries a certain cache (who doesn’t love those boxes!) but good for you for finding essentially the same ring at a better deal!

    Easy as pie :o ) FI and I both had decided (separately and coincidentally) that we wanted wide plain gold bands. PERFECT! We went shopping for about 2 hours and both found our perfect match (at 2 different jewelers). And whooooaaalllla, we were done.

    I have never heard of whitefish…hmm sounds fun!!! We’re doing the same thing in the sense that we’re buying each other’s rings. It’s actually going to be our Christmas presents this year! We’re just starting to look!

    Oh so glad to hear about your happy ending! We wear my late parents’ bands –cheap and easy (paid for cleaning and sizing). I think I am a little allergic to my ma’s band, so I’m thinking about having it plated in platinum b/c my e-ring didn’t irritate my finger. I sure do love that Tiffany Etoile band (or Bezet in your case)!

    My band was bought with my e-ring, because it went nicely and FI wanted to do everything at once.

    For his band, we got a promotional advert from the place we got my ring and decided to go looking while the sale was on. He found one he liked a lot, we ordered it — it met the minimum for the sale by only $17, but that was coincidence — ta-da. Done. We almost felt bad, like we were taking advantage of them, but hey. He liked that one best, it wasn’t like he was trying to be cheap.

    We went looking for designs we like and then asked our jeweller friend to replicate them. It was a bonus we know someone.
    But even for average person if you go to those big named shops you pay for the name (not the quality). Our friend makes heaps of replica Tiffany & Co Jewellery and it most cases you get a bitter quality ring (and diamond) than Tiffany sell, plus it costs you less.

    We got my band from the same jeweler who made my ering, since the band needed a notch for the ering to settle into. We decided to get his band (for $1K) from the same jeweler, and from then on it was a rollercoaster.

    In the end, we both had our rings on our wedding day, even though his was engraved 11-10-09 (we were married 10-10-09).

    He lost his ring a month later (yes, I believe the 11-10-09 was significant!). He bought a replacement for under $100. Ce la vie.

    We shopped around for my band. FI didn’t like having inset diamonds as he was worried that they wouldn’t be secure enough for my life style (my solitare is a 6 prong cathedral setting for this reason). We found an engraved band that added the extra bling I wanted without stones in platinum. What can I say, I like my pure metals. :-)

    For his band, he really wanted me to make it out of Titanium. This past weekend, I spent about 3 hrs in the machine shop and made a prototype out of steel. He loves the design I came up with! Plain, rounded band with two channels. Now to make the real one (and probably a couple of spares…).

    We got my ring from a jewelry store going out of business & he got his from Perry Olsen, on line. His is tungsten carbide & he LOVES it. The most important thing for me was that he really loved what he put on his finger, and while he found some in stores that he liked, they were 4 times the price of the one that he got online.

    I adore the band you chose! The way the diamonds stagger is so pretty. And there’s nothing wrong with your bands coming from different places, our bands look nothing at all like each others but they each fit our personalities so to me, they’re perfect!

    ZOMG. I am not even joking one bit. The Whiteflash band? Is exactly what I am looking to buy for mine. I’m trying to have my jeweler make it, and if he can’t we were just going to order it online.

    I love the uniqueness and randomness of the band. Love love love it.

    Hi,
    I ordered this ring from whiteflash in a larger size than a 10 actually a 13. My husband has huge fingers and it is not a custom order either. You just need to call in and tell them the size and they will make it for you without any extra cost it just seems like their ring sizer only goes to 10. But I LOVE LOVE LOVE this ring. Great quality and the diamonds just sparkle like crazy!
