Phish for the Starfishies?

May 3rd, 2010 @ 6:02 pm by Mrs. Starfish

When we first talked about our first dance song, we couldn’t figure out what to pick. We never really had a song. With no official song, choosing our first dance song hasn’t been easy.

I started looking up lists of wedding songs for everything from cocktail music to entrance options. While searching for father-daughter options, I came across the Beatles’ In My Life. I had heard it many times before, but as I was reading the lyrics, it didn’t remind me of my father, but it reminded me of Mr. Starfish. It even ends with our favorite phrase, “I love you more.”

I loved it. I actually had a friend tell me the song reminded her of me and Mr. Starfish at another wedding. I’m not sure why, but it confirmed my thoughts of it as the perfect song for us. I told Mr. Starfish about my new option and he really liked it, too. I thought we had picked our song.

A few months later, we were driving somewhere and Mr. Starfish put in his Phish CD. The song “Waste” came on and I told him it always reminds me of him because he used to leave lyrics from the song in his away messages in college. He used to put in the lyrics in reference to me. Mr. Starfish asked what I thought of it for a first dance song.

I told Starfish Mom about the possibility and she couldn’t believe I would want a song called “Waste” played at the wedding, let alone as our first dance. Then I had her listen to it, and she changed her mind and thought it was a great option.

So, we have a decision to make. Go with a more traditional choice or a less traditional choice. It’s hard because we really like both options. I think it will come down to the song we like dancing to better—we’ll have to do a little trial.

Do you have an “official song”? Did you use it for your first dance, or go with something completely different?

Well, I’m walking down the aisle to “In My Life,” so you know which I’m gonna vote for! :)

We use “I love you more” too! I’ve thought of engraving his ring with that phrase. Go with whatever you love. This is your day but I’m gonna have to go with the “traditional”.

We’re having the lyrics to “In My Life” read during the ceremony, and are walking out to “Two of Us”. My fiance’s a big Beatles fan. :) But our first dance song will be one of the songs that were playing when he proposed (”Anything For Your Love” by Eric Clapton).

I say untraditional…or at least whatever feels the most “you” and more personal. I think the lyrics are really romantic in a special way.

I love that song and I love the beatles. Don’t worry about not being traditional. The first dance is just for you and him and it doesn’t matter who else is even in the room at that moment, so go with your gut. My fiance and I will be dancing to “hold you in my arms” by Ray Lamontagne. Not many people even know of him, and almost no one will know this song. But we love it and it’s beautiful and it will make the dance very special for us.

Waste is the song on our wedding webpage! Love it. It’s such a dreamy tune.

ok, “in my life” is one of my favorite songs in life. judy collins does another version of it which is a bit sweeter, but i do have to say i prefer how my four BFFs, the beatles, do it (ok so they are not my BFFs anywhere but in my cabeza, but so what??). the best part of “in my life” is the noveau baroque harpsichord bit…a bit of JS Bach in a 60s tune…that is badass. i did listen to the phish song, and it is sweet, but for me, nothing beats the Beats!

Waste was our bridal party song! We are huge Phish fans so we had a few Phish tunes sprinkled in through out the evening (it helped that a lot of the guests were Phish fans, too)! Including Contact as our last song of the evening!

I think Waste is one of Phish’s best songs. As long as you’re comfortable with the length, I say go for it! I love that it has history for you guys. I do think that there are versions better than the one you posted above, though.

I saw them for the first time the first night of Hampton (I know….) and then about another 5 times last year. I had actually asked my husband if he wanted to have any phish songs at our wedding and he shot me down. But he’s seen ‘em a million times over the past 15 years or so, so some of his memories were…less than wedding-like.

We have tickets to 3 shows this year and I can’t WAIT to see them again. “Backwards down the number line” makes me so happy I can’t even explain it.

Our song is “The Way I Am” by Ingrid Michaelson. It will definitely be our First Dance song. It is just over 2 minutes, so it will decrease the awkward dance time we have to endure.

We’re doing This Will be Our Year by The Zombies. It’s sweet and short, and FH burned it onto a love cd for me a few years ago. It’s totally our song.

“in my life” is actually the song i’m dancing with my grandfather to!

i vote for “waste”. the song has special meaning for you guys, and might be more special for both of you since hearing it makes you think of each other already. traditional, shmaditional. if it’s what you want, i say do it!

we’re still trying to pick our first dance song. i told fh that i really liked iron and wine’s cover of “such great heights” bc when we first started dating, he played guitar a lot and would start playing and singing that song to me all the time.

and wouldn’t you know, he doesn’t remember doing that at all haha!

I definitely vote for Phish…I’m totally in love with the song, and it sounds like you have a personal connection to it. Maybe you could use the Beatles song for your last song of the night (or vise versa). My fiance and I were torn between two songs, and that’s what we decided. Out first dance will be “Calico Skies,” and our last dance with be “Thank you.” (Although we can’t decide if we will go with Led Zep’s original or the Chris Cornell cover.)

My fiance l-o-v-e-s Phish, and I’ve been a sorta fan for a lonnnnggg time, and saw them for the first time last summer at Fenway (I thought my fiance died and was in heaven). :) We found a version of Dave Matthews covering “Waste,” and are using that as our first dance song. It’s a great song, and I think it’s a perfect way for us to start our lives together. Random, yet perfect. :)

My fiance is a HUGE phish fan, so we are playing phish during dinner and then our last slow song of the night is WASTE, followed by two more fast songs! I say go with whatever has more meaning to you!

We don’t have an official song either and have been peeling our ears to every song that we listen to to see if it’s “our” song! haha! I say go with a song that means the most to both of you!

Waste all the way! I fell in love with this song when I was at a Dave concert and he sang it. I think it is beautiful and perfect. What better way to spend your day with you sweetie! Oh and I am a huge Beatles fan but I would go with Phish! Be original. We are dancing to Forever by Ben Harper. Also check out Man and Wife by Michelle Featherstone. BEAUTIFUL!

Such a personal choice, I’m a fan of picking a song that speaks most to you as a couple, even if it’s not the most traditional choice!
