Mrs. Veggie's Picture
Mrs. Veggie, Raglan, New Zealand/Scranton, PA Age and Occupation: 27, Director of Small Non-Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 42, PhD Student & Farmer Engagement Date: June 13, 2009 Wedding Date: August 2010 Venue: Indian Head Camp, Honesdale Pennsylvania About Me: I am a tree-huggin' farmer turned enthusiastic wedding-planner. I live in a house truck and wear flip-flops more often than shoes. In my old life I was a high school Spanish teacher in love with a crazy guy who lived off-the grid on a farm in New Hampshire. But, we decided to mix things up a bit, quit our jobs and move to New Zealand. My southern hemisphere lifestyle involves growing veggies, teaching, running our small non-profit, and surfing. I love laughing, singing, playing, and the inspirational Mr. Veggie (of course!). For our wedding, I am committed to throwing a killer party that celebrates our values without breaking the bank. Look forward to an eco-thrifty summer-campy weekend-long extravaganza.
About Mrs. Veggie

Too dramatic? OK let’s try again.

We’re not sending invitations.

We’ve been thinking along these lines for a while. But I haven’t really discussed it with anyone fully besides Mr. Veggie. I guess I was a bit afraid of peoples’ reactions.

Will they be shocked at our lack of decorum?

Confused at why we would forgo such an important detail?

Disapproving of our decision?

Well, Willis, this is what we’re talking about. Tough choices.

We have a strict budget, financially and ecologically. When we decided to splurge on a photographer we knew there would be other things that we would have to cut out. And, when we looked at all of the components of a wedding, invites just seemed to make the most sense to us, ecologically and financially.

Don’t get me wrong. I love getting mail. I love the idea of people opening our invites all over the world and getting excited for our big day. I would love getting back RSVP cards. I love envelope liners. I love twine. I love wood block carvings. I love letterpress.

I love this set of invites:

And this one:We're Not Sending Invitations?!?! *gasp* : wedding invitations scranton Picture01

And this one:

And this one:

While I swooned over our Save The Dates design, I didn’t like that they arrived in the form of an attachment on an email. Where’s the fun in that? No one gets excited over receiving a mass email. Verdana font on a computer screen just can’t compete with letterpress swirls and twirls. And the second it takes you to click on an attachment hardly holds the anticipation and glee of opening an envelope.

And that’s why my heart broke a little the day I realized that paper invitations were not in our future.

But then I found Paperless Post and the skies began to clear. They have solved the excitement v. eco, pretty v. functional, paper v. e- dilemmas. When you send an invitation through them they send a personalized envelope to each recipient’s email, which they can click on to “open” the invitation. The invitation they open is created by you using one of PP’s gorgeous templates, which are designed to look like letterpress. They can click on the invitation to RSVP. Genius.

And then I saw this video… and I swear I heard a choir of angels.

I began to realize that there are some advantages that e-invites have over their paper counterparts. Not only could we do a rad video, but depending on what company we use, we can also link directly to our website and registry, manage our RSVPs, link to a Mapquest or Google map, and even allow people to add our wedding as an event to their blackberries.

So what I’m imagining now is a Paperless Post-type e-invite where the email guests receive will have a personalized envelope. But instead of opening up to a beautiful one-page invite, it will open to a multiple page invite. The first page will contain our video, the second will look like a traditional invite, and the third will link to our wedding website where guests can RSVP, check out maps, registries, etc.

OK bees, so here’s my question to you. How do I make this happen? Paperless Post says that their system is only set up to do one-page invites. Any ideas?

Oh, I love this idea! It’s modern AND eco-friendly. I was in love with our invites but I did feel very, very guilty about the paper and energy used to send them.

Having never worked with the company, my only suggestion is to contact them directly? Super helpful, I know!

i think your guests will love the paperless post invites, and the decision totally makes sense for you! we also considered doing everything via email, but i admit, i caved to the paper. can’t wait to see the final product!

Invitations are soooooo pretty, but at the end of the day they are just paper. People through them out except for maybe the parents of each side. Invites get left behind at the house and the only thing people take with them are directions. They aren’t a necessity at all. If you have the money cool go for it, but I wouldn’t want to waste my time buying or DYIing things I know I don’t care much about and people will just throw out when you can put that cash away for the honeymoon or something worthwhile. That’s just my two cents. :)

Looks like they system is flashed based with two configurable options in their system; text and background. I am not sure if you are going to be able to do a three page through them.

Do you know any programmers? Anyone with a basic understanding of programming could put together a little flash app to do what you want. Depending on how brave you are get yourself one of those teach your flash in 24 hours books.

Or post out on craigslist for a flash programmer. We programmers are always looking for a for side jobs. =)

I wish we could do something similar, these are so cute. I have too many people on my guest list though, that are not tech savvy and once-a-month e-mail checkers lol.

Ditto shaydenise. I LOVE this idea, but my own parents hardly know how to check their email and my mother would have a fit if I even hinted at the idea.

I have always preferred evite over paper invitations. Do you know how many pieces of paper I go through daily in my home? Yeah, the chance of me losing one is high. I have never lost an evite. My computer is much more organized than my apartment will ever be. And there is this little magic button called Search….

Plus it’s eco-friendly!

Just get a flash-based animated letter opening for a normal wedding website. Or you could make a video intro for the website.

OMG that video is sooooo awesome! I would absolutely love to get a wedding invitation like that, and I think it’s a great way to minimize your wedding’s footprint at the end of the day! Great idea… the paperless looks awesome! You could always have a few attachments to the email if the paperless post only lets you have one… send that, with a couple attachments to the further information.

I don’t have the tech skills to help you, but I think this is a cool idea. Unfortunately for us, I know we had a lot of family who couldn’t figure even this out!

Thank you so much for making me discover this! We are planning our wedding with a really short notice and I don’t want to stress over paper invitations.

Wow, excellent idea Veggie! I love that invitation video, and can’t wait to see what you guys come up with! I think it’s perfect for you. Sorry I can’t help on the technical front :(

This is such a great idea! For one page, do they limit the size of the page? Maybe you could create a parchment scroll or a gazette style invitation?

I love this idea! So fantastic, modern AND green! The only thing I can forsee being an issue are older people — I know I have to send invitations because my grandmother doesn’t know how to turn on a computer! Love this for you, so much!

Love the idea, but to echo some of the other concerns, what about tech-challenged relatives and or friends? I know my grandparents lack the knowledge of computers and do not have a personal email address!

I know budget is an issue, but there are some great videographers and skilled cameramen who do this!

My boyfriend is in the film industry and a lot of camera guys he works with do this on the side for some extra cash and charge very reasonable prices. They would probably be able to work with you in terms of price if they knew you were on a budget, and will basically do whatever you want how you want it. One of the camera guys who does this recently did one for himself and his wife for their invitations and it was out of control amazing.

This is an awesome way to build excitement as your guests read each page of your invite until they RSVP!

veggie, i have been having the same conundrum. paper invitations will always have a bigger carbon footprint than e-vites. i struggled with how to reconcile this, as i think that sending out a real invitation is something that will happen less and less frequently in our globalized e-world. ultimately, i decided to make my own invites out of recycled materials (like a $3 old book of sheet music and recycled card stock…will post when they are done bc they are bad ass if i do say so myself). one of the big reasons i decided we should do a real invitation is the total frustration i have felt every time i did an e-vite. some people respond to e-vites like good guests, but many, MANY people do not respond at all. i am hoping that getting a real-deal card in the mail will encourage people to muster up the energy to check a box, lick the pre-stamped envelope, and walk over to their mailbox. :-)
