Mrs. Lobster's Picture
Mrs. Lobster, Brooklyn Age and Occupation: 29, Finance Girl Fiance's Age and Occupation: 33, Finance Boy Engagement Date: July 25, 2009 Wedding Date: August 2010 Venue: Stage 6 Steiner Studios About Me: I'm a New York-born, Virginia-bred girl who's found her way back to the big city. Mr. Lobster and I met in grad school and have been together ever since. I'm clueless about DIY but am an avid online shopper and love all things polka dots, stripes, and ruffles! When I'm not making wedding lists, you can find me looking for snacks, watching Gilmore Girls, or hanging out with Mr. Lobster and our new puppy Buddy! We are planning a fancy-pantsy Brooklyn wedding for a hot New York summer night which is sure to be a misadventure in the making.
About Mrs. Lobster

Let’s recap what’s happened so far:

  1. The Design. I tried to create my own design but then my friend made one that was better.
  2. Edge painting. What? You don’t remember this? That’s because it never happened. I even went so far as to buy 6 bottles of seafoam green acrylic paint (that’s too many, by the way, for 50 save the dates).
  3. Envelope liners. Again, I wanted to be creative and custom make them but then nothing came to mind. I found some great Paper Source ones instead.
  4. And finally, addressing the envelopes. How to address them without using a label but without handwriting them (this not an option given my chicken scratch). Ultimately I printed most of them but feared my printer would only spit out something horribly gray and ruin my lovely bright white envelopes. I got over it.*

*I realized that the envelopes were at the mercy of USPS already.

To prolong the detail madness, I added a rubber stamp border in midnight blue from my favorite paper store, Paper Source. Here are some selections from their website:

Paper Source

I debated this for days. (No, really, is there nothing else going on in my life??) In the end, I picked the birdcage because it was more fun and less formal than the vintage marquis. Of course, I had trouble actually using the stamp and unlike many others before me, I didn’t test it out on any scrap. I just went head-on. So here are the mixed results:

See how some are faded and some are blotchy? In the beginning, I wasn’t inking it enough. Then the blotchy ones happened because I pressed too hard and shifted the stamp mid-press. However, most of them turned out OK and I can attribute the variations to “artistic quality”. We all know I’m not making new envelopes anyway.

As for the return address, (GEEZ will the details not stop coming??) I gave in and just hand-wrote it as carefully as possible, hoping most people wouldn’t notice the scribbles.

Now, the FINAL FINAL product (what’s the point if I blur some of it out anyway? Sorry).

YAY!! Now they’re done and off to the post office. BOO YA, save the dates!!!

Tip: When you are sealing your envelopes, just do the tip and maybe half inch on either side. Any more than that, your guests might have to rip open the envelope and thus not see your beautiful liner! I learned that the hard way.

Did you obsess over minor details with your Save-the-Dates? How did you make your decisions?

I actually love the look of your handwritten return address… and definitely love the handcrafty look ;) I, too, obsessed to no end with all the details of every project until I couldn’t stand it anymore. Then I just let the details go and enjoyed the “handcraftiness” of it. Glad I’m not alone. Great job Lobster.

Love love love. And I think it’s funny that one of your guests lives in Derwood, MD. I work there. :-)

Love the liners, and love the birdcage! I was all about the details, too. I think for me ultimately, the liners made the biggest impact — people are raving about them!

Haha, I was crazy about guests ripping my liners too. I slaved over those things. I ended up just using a sticker to seal the envelopes so people hopefully wouldn’t just rip them.
