Mrs. Frozen Yogurt's Picture
Mrs. Frozen Yogurt, Dallas Age and Occupation: 28, Special Projects Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Equity Trader Engagement Date: March 19, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2010 Venue: Marie Gabrielle, Dallas About Me: I was born and raised in Texas, and have lived in several of the cities across the state, but I currently reside in Austin. I went to college in Boston and have a special place in my heart for the Northeast. I love reading, shopping, wine, reuniting with college friends that are scattered across the country, reality TV, trying out new recipes, and attempting all the DIY projects that come along with wedding planning. I'm a "bleeding heart, save the world type" and thankfully my job allows me to work on legislation and policy to help out those in need. I met Mr. Frozen Yogurt in a bar, though he doesn't even drink! And now we are planning a modern yet vintage wedding in Dallas while dealing with the trials and tribulations of first time homeownership.

Weather Bites

May 3rd, 2010 @ 3:44 pm by Mrs. Frozen Yogurt

If you’ve watched our video trailer, then you know it rained on our wedding day. And, if you’ve been following me, then you know I was supposed to have an outdoor ceremony underneath some gorgeous trees in the midst of a European style garden nestled right in the middle of Uptown Dallas. Well, that didn’t happen.

Let me give you a breakdown of how the day transpired.

In the days leading up to the wedding, I psycho-checked all the normal weather sites: Weather, Accuweather, and Weather Underground. And when I say psycho, I mean it. I talked to my coordinator and she told me that I did not need to stress about the rain until it got to 90% chance of rain. It was hovering between 30 and 60%. So I stopped stressing. Phew! The day of the wedding though, I checked again. And it was 90%. I could feel the tears forming, and I texted bridesmaid Kim with only the words: “It’s 90%.” She texted back to say her super phone (code for iPhone) said it was only 50%, so that’s what we were going to go by. I wiped away my tears and let it go.

Then, we were watching the news and on the radar was this giant, massive, rain storm with the colors red, orange and green all jumbled together. My sister’s boyfriend had the remote and just said, “Well, it looks clear!” and quickly changed the channel. Then, my makeup and hair girl arrived and casually mentioned the word “rain” and she was told that “rain” was not a word we were going to say today.

At this point the rain had held off and I started to think that maybe we could squeak through the day with no rain. My internet was down so I couldn’t check the hour by hour forecast, which maybe was a good thing, and although I noticed the clouds, not a drop of rain had fallen from them. Until we started heading to the venue…

Bridesmaid Sydney was driving and her car’s wipers come on automatically when the rain starts, and on they went. I cried, and she wished for a moment that the automatic wipers could be disabled. But we talked about what really mattered that day, and the rain wasn’t going to stop any of that. At this point it was still just sprinkling, so I still had hope.

Once we got to the venue, Mr. Fro Yo and I did our first look outside because the rain was holding off. We took some amazing pictures with our bridal party, and I was all smiles. However, my very organized planner was checking the hour by hour weather forecast and she knew that our 6:30 ceremony was the exact time the rain was supposed to start falling hard. She made the call to move the ceremony inside and I cried. I knew that we didn’t want to recreate the Bachelor wedding, and that it was definitely the right call to make, but I’d been planning an outdoor garden wedding for over a year.

However, that was the last time I cried about the weather and I honestly stopped caring about the rain. I’d done my first look and was on cloud nine that I was about to marry the person I love more than anything. The ceremony was still beautiful, and I was so relieved that we had a backup plan. I met 2 brides at our hotel that night that did not have a backup plan and their wedding memories were not quite as fond as mine.

So, the point of this whole rambling post was to tell you that a backup plan is crucial. No, I didn’t get exactly what I wanted, but I had something beautiful and dry, and I have so many happy memories from the day. And because you’ve made it this far, I’ll share a picture of our first look before the rain started:

hell yes! Not only have I been planning an outdoor ceremony for the last year, I have DREAMED of one ever since I was old enough to know what a wedding was…So I do have a backup plan, but that is my worst fear…that it will rain on my day and I won’t have the outdoor ceremony that I have always dreamed of..What I try to keep in the forefront is that God laughs when we make plans, so I am thinking that it probably will rain

FroYo, judging by your video trailer, your “backup plan” was beautiful! Glad you had such a wonderful day despite the weather un-permitting.

that picture is stunning! I have the very same worries about my garden wedding and I just keep reminding myself that rain or shine, we’ll still be married the next morning!

I’m sorry that you didn’t have sunny skies, but I am glad that you were able to appreciate what the day was really about.

I moved locations due to not being able to accomodate all of our guests at our location if it rained. It would be pretty tight, and I’d rather give up our amazing location to stop stressing about the “what if it rains” thoughts that kept creeping into my head at unsuspecting moments.

I’m 12 days out, and am hoping and praying that we’ll have sunny skies. But if not, after the majority of the reception is over, maybe we’ll have a fantastic trash the dress shoot on the spot.

Our ceremony is indoors, but the reception is outside under tents. We don’t really have a backup plan persay, but because people will be under tents, unless there are terrible gale-force winds, we should be okay.

I admire anyone who plans an outdoor ceremony. I would be a wreck for a year.

Awwww! We have yet to determine our backup plan… I see some brides do the cute thing and buy mini umbrellas for everyone in their tiny little rain showers (ya’ know the ones, where the sun still shines) but let’s face it, I live in Florida and it can look like a hurricane outside for 5 minutes then clear up immediately and be sunny. Those mini umbrellas just won’t cut it for us.

Our backup (but waay less cool) plan is I believe similar to yours - no garden wedding but inside the hall wedding. The wedding is next month and I’m hoping for clear skiies. Photographer FI says overcast is fine - actually good for lighting of people, but I’ll be crushed if it poors. Glad you made the best and remembered whats important!

Since we planned a late winter/early spring wedding, we didn’t even consider a venue without a built-in backup plan. It turned out to be about 15 degrees warmer than we expected and completely clear, but that was just dumb luck! Every Saturday before that for an entire week raaaaained (and rained hard). So glad you had a backup plan!

YEs! I’m super concerned!! We haven’t finalized our backup plan yet (we still have lots of time), but I want plan b to be just as amazing as plan a, which probably won’t be the case. My hope is that the weather next year will be like it was this year. We’re marrying in early April, so the weather is so unpredictable, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed. It’s nice to hear from a bride that went with plan b and still loved it. Excellent post!! This is a touchy subject!

Your backup plan was still gorgeous!! I’m planning an outdoor ceremony with the backup plan to move it inside if it rains, but like you I’m sure I’ll be checking the weather all week leading up to the wedding (in April in Texas, crossing my fingers)

I changed my ceremony from outdoors to indoors just for this reason! I so do not want to be psycho-checking the weather and freaking out the week before the wedding…Plus, I figure if I plan for an indoor ceremony, it will be beautiful and sunny, just bc isn’t that the way things always work out??

Despite the nasty weather, I’m happy to hear you pushed those tears aside and still had a memorable (and beautiful) day! :-)

It sounds like you handled the rain so well! And it’s great that at least you were able to do your first look outside! I’m hoping I can push through the tears the same way you did if we have a similar situation on our wedding day….

@SaraElizabeth: Aww, thanks! That makes me happy. :)
@llc2011: In Texas, supposedly May has more showers. I looked into it. :)
@Miss Trail Mix: And then you’ll get to take beautiful photos outside in the bright, sunny weather. Win, win!
@Miss Cola: You definitely would! But no rain for you. :)

I know exactly how you felt because I am that bride right now. We have 60% chance of thunderstorms on our wedding day and I nearly cry about it every day. Thank you so much for this post - I can guarantee I will be upset if it rains, but it’s so wonderful to hear that you loved your wedding despite the rain! Also I’m so glad we have a backup indoor plan to ease my fears somewhat :)

Our ceremony and reception is indoors. My parents had a blizzard, my brother had an ice storm - I’m genetically predisposed to having a monsoon. I decided not to take chances.
