Bring in the Strings!

May 4th, 2010 @ 5:42 pm by Mrs. Turtle

One thing I’ve always known I wanted at our wedding was a string quartet. I went to a wedding with one when I was a kid, and since I haven’t been to that many weddings in my life, I grew up thinking that all weddings had a string quartet! Come to find out, it’s actually pretty rare these days. I was only able to find two options in the whole area we’re getting married in! Thankfully, I found The Candlelight Strings, and thanks to them, we will be experiencing some beautiful string music on our wedding day, courtesy of these smiling faces:

Before the ceremony, we want to keep it feeling very classic, so they will be playing a mixture of mu and Mr. Turtle’s favorite Classical and Baroque pieces, including some old wedding standbys, of course! We’re mixing it up a little bit for our ceremony, though.

For my walk down the aisle, they are preparing an arrangement of “Something” by the Beatles. (Like a few of the other bBee couples, the Turtles are big time Beatles fans!) “Something” has been Mr. Turtle’s song for me since high school, so I know that he is going to love hearing it at the wedding!

It should sound a little bit like this version, from The Vitamin String Quartet:

For the recessional, I am asking them to play “Viva La Vida” by Coldplay, which should sound a little bit like this:

For the cocktail hour and dinner, the string quartet will switch from Classical mode to more recognizable contemporary pieces. We are requesting a mixture of songs from old musicals, classic rock, Frank Sinatra-style crooner songs, and themes from some of our favorite movies and TV shows. This should create a more fun, upbeat atmosphere, while still being classy and old fashioned. Hopefully some of our guests will recognize the songs and enjoy hearing them played by a string quartet for a change!

Anyway, this is an aspect of our wedding that I am really looking forward to! I have a feeling that it won’t hit me that we’re actually getting married until I hear the strings begin to play before the ceremony begins.

Did you choose songs for the ceremony that carry special meaning for you?

I’ve always wanted a string quartet or trio, also. I think it gives a richness, or fullness to the ceremony.

If I may ask, are you planning on switching to a DJ, or some other kind of music\entertainment after the dinner segment or will you have them play for the whole reception?

Cheers,

Carrie

I adore string quartets as well! I think the flow of traditional into contemporary will be fabulous.

I really wanted some Vitamin String Quartet type music but FI put his foot down. Since he cares about so little about what goes on, I figure he can put his foot down every once in awhile. I wanted to walk down to a string version of “El Scorcho” but I gave it to freakin’ “here comes the bride.” We compromised though and I got out of bouquet and garter tosses.

I’m so jealous!!! I wanted a string quartet very badly but it isn’t in the budget and FI wasn’t a big fan. *pout*

Love it! This is the aspect of the wedding I’m MOST excited about :) We’re also having them for the ceremony, cocktail hour, and through dinner. I like your idea of starting traditional and moving to pop songs. Lovely

Oh man I really want this too! But it’s completely impractical for us, I’m so sad. So envious of you! :D

I love the idea of a string quartet! That will be beautiful! It wouldn’t fit for our venue, but sometimes I wish it would!

yay! i’m so glad you’re going to have a string quartet–you’re right, i don’t think people do this as much anymore, but they’re really beautiful.

OMG! I’m soooooooooooo extremely jealous you’re having a string quartet play at your wedding!! This was definitely one of those things I wish I could have at my wedding!! At least for the ceremony part, but alas, they were too expensive. Super disappointing. String quartets at a wedding are so romantic and beautiful. Le sigh….
