Mrs. Guinea Pig's Picture
Mrs. Guinea Pig, Baltimore, MD Age and Occupation: 26, PhD student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Operations Director at a non-profit Engagement Date: December 25, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: The Chesapeake Bay Beach Club About Me: I'm a tomboy science nerd whose girly side has made a startling appearance thanks to wedding planning! I love to bake, knit and sew but I also ride a motorcycle (that Mr. Guinea Pig wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole). We live with our three crazy cats and love to read, travel, watch movies, and do home improvement projects together! My parents/family are Canadian but I'm definitely American, although I've lived in 5 different countries, 6 different states, and speak Russian fluently. Mr. GP and I met online (did I mention I'm a scientist?) and had a whirlwind romance - now we can't wait to get married & celebrate with all our friends and family in a blue and yellow waterfront affair!
About Mrs. Guinea Pig

When Mr. Guinea Pig first gave me my engagement ring, it fit just the way I like it: slightly loose. Big enough to slide over my giant knuckles (I’m a notorious knuckle cracker), and just small enough to stay on without feeling tight or rubbing.

Then I lost some weight, and the ring was no longer just comfortably loose, but actually too big. When we went to a hockey game last month, my hands were freezing - as I was cheering and clapping, I realized that with cold hands I was in danger of flinging my ring off! So, added to my to-do list was to get my ring resized.

(a leetle too big - although I was pushing it up to show the gap)

I took a closer look at my ring and realized that I’d been kind of rough with it over the last year and a half, because check out the scratches on the band!

(a year and a half of being rough to white gold)

So I figured while resizing my ring, I’d get it Rhodium plated to spiff it up!

Rhodium is a precious metal in the platinum family, and it’s a bright silvery white color. It has a high reflectance (meaning it’s very reflective, like a mirrored surface) so it makes the jewelry quite shiny. On its own, rhodium is not malleable enough to make solid jewelry (and has a really high melting point so it’s hard to heat up to the point of bend-ability) plus it’s pretty expensive, so the solution is to simply electroplate white gold or platinum jewelry with it to give a thin coating with extra shine and protection/durability.

In addition to just the pretty aspect, rhodium is an inert metal and hypoallergenic, so if you’re allergic to the components of white gold (i.e. nickel), you can rhodium plate your ring to protect your fingers from an allergic reaction! Rhodium also will not tarnish or discolor, so you won’t have the yellowing that white gold has over time (although it will eventually wear off so you’ll have to re-plate your ring).

When I got my ring back last week, it was an e-ring worthy of a wedding day! It fit:

(this baby’s not going anywhere)

Aaand it’s nice and shiny!

(Hello reflection!)

Now my engagement ring is all ready for its close-up photos, even though a new ring will be sharing the spotlight!

Did you have any last minute work done to your engagement ring? Are you spiffing it up before the wedding?

I have to take my rings to the jeweler a week before the wedding to get the e-ring re-rhodiumed and the rings sized so they are the same (somehow my band is a little larger even though it was the same size as my e-ring).

I’m doing the exact same thing - It’s actually out being dipped as we speak. Did you wear a decoy in it’s place? I felt totally naked when we dropped it off, so I found an old ring that I’ve been wearing until we get it back!

I also need to get my ring resized! And I wanted to re-coat the band, since the white gold has yellowed, but now I know about rhodium.

My e-ring is actually rhodium plated also because I am allergic to nickel and didn’t want to chance is with the white gold. Love it :)

I LOVE getting my ring rhodium plated. I bring it in every couple months to a friend that works at a jewelry store and after about 5 minutes, I have a sparkly new band to look at!

So I definitely need to add that to my wedding to do list!

My jeweller said they would sent my ring to be “re-dipped” before the wedding to make it shiny and new looking again… would this be rhodium or something else?? Is it expensive to have it rhodium plated?

I’m actually getting my e-ring and wedding band soddered together right before the wedding. It’ll also get a nice touch up to really make it sparkle too1

I have a ring that’s getting replated as we speak (not my e-ring)! Yay for the e-ring not flying off in the cold - whew!

It looks gorgeous! Mine is too big too. :( But so far I haven’t wanted to part with it to get it resized.

Your ring looks great now! I wonder if the same thing can be done to other white gold jewelry?

@eriqua: I did wear another ring in it’s place! I actually have another ring that Mr. GP gave me, so I wore that one all week - otherwise my finger definitely would have felt naked :)
@Curlysue: I first learned about rhodium ~2 years ago when a friend’s coating had worn off and she couldn’t wear her rings until she replated them with rhodium because she’s allergic to nickel! It’s a great solution for those allergic to white gold.
@cecullaton: I’m not positive that ‘re-dipped’ means in rhodium, but my guess is yes, it’s probably rhodium. It’s not too expensive, and it depends on the complexity of your ring setting, but around here it’s usually in the $40-60 range to rhodium plate a ring.
@Mrs. Frozen Yogurt: I was sad not to have my ring for a week, but I was more afraid of flinging it off!
@Lillindy: I don’t see why not - I think it would depend on what other metals/stones/materials were in the piece, but I’m sure you can rhodium plate other white gold too. Nothing special about the white gold in rings vs. other jewelry!
@Miss Frog, @Cornhusker: Hooray for learning new things!

I did not know that about Rhodium! I also had to resize my ring to get ready for the big day as the exact same situation happened to me where I had it fit slightly loose then lost weight and almost lost the ring a few times. Now it’s pretty snug and not going anywhere!

I got my e-ring rhodium dipped and soldered to my band so that the diamonds didn’t keep spinning to the back of my band (I love it!)…and it hasn’t yellowed half as quickly as my e-ring did when it was plain white gold!
