Dress Code

May 5th, 2010 @ 4:21 pm by Mrs. Sewing

Rehearsal dinner dress, wedding dress, cultural dress, getaway dress, honeymoon dresses. I never really thought I’d have to think about so many dresses.

Then after thinking about the dress, there’s what goes with the dress, under the dress, on the feet and in the hair. And I don’t even have a fleet of bridesmaids or flower girls to dress, like many other brides do.

But if that wasn’t enough work, I’ve also started receiving questions like the following:

Sewing-Bro: Can I wear my Rainbows instead of normal shoes?

Dress Code : wedding dress honolulu 2935255

(source)

Sewing-Dad: Do I have to wear a suit? It’ll be hot!

Sewing-Mom: How about this dress? Is it flattering? Or should I wear a muumuu instead?

Guest-Friend-1: I don’t have a French cuff shirt, is that a problem?

Mr. Sew-Mom: What color is Penga-mom wearing?

Sewing-Mom: How about this one? Do you think I can lose two sizes before the wedding?

Sewing-Sis: I’m going to wear jeans.

Guest-Friend-2: Is there a dress code?

Guest-Friend-3: Sewing-mom and I are going to water aerobics to get fit before we buy dresses.

Sewing-Sis: Nevermind, I’m going to wear my bathing suit instead so I can go swimming later.

Mr. Sew-Bro: Do you think my butt is too flat for these pants?

Sewing-Mom: Maybe this one instead? Does it need to match the wedding colors?

Sewing-Bro: Can I bring my Jason Mraz hat?

Dress Code : wedding dress honolulu Jason S

(source)

Honestly, I don’t really care what anyone wears, with the exception of the Jason Mraz hat. (Please Sewing-Bro, don’t do it!)

Mr. Sew, interestingly enough, has expressed an opinion. He expects everyone to show up fancy. Nice button-up collared shirts, maybe with ties, or maybe just silk Aloha shirts. He’d like to see combed hair and shoes that aren’t full of sand, and no one other than me wearing white, with everyone remembering their deodorant. All the usual stuff.

However, since I don’t care what anyone decides to wear (or not wear), and Mr. Sew will probably never express his opinion on formality to anyone besides me - we’re just going to be surprised. I have strange day-dreams sometimes that everyone will come in cosplay. That would be amazing - the best breach of black tie that I can imagine.

One good thing that all these clothing-related comments tell me though, is that everyone is too busy worried about what they will be wearing to notice what I’ll be wearing! That means less dress pressure for me, phew!

Are your guests letting you in on their wedding-day attire search? Will you be surprised on your wedding day, or are you opting for the safer route of a dress code?

i completely understand how you feel. everyone asking what they should wear. I wanted everyone to look nice and they didn’t have to wear gowns but just look presentable. and that was all i asked. but i am sure people will use their judgement =)

Haha this made me laugh out loud. My sister keeps saying she’s going to lose 30 pounds before the wedding, so she’s going to wait until that week to buy a dress. Um, no! (she’s been planning on “losing 30 lbs” for like 5 years now– without success– I can relate…!)

Oh yes, I’ve definitely been getting questions as well! We put “Black Tie Optional” on our invitations, and really meant the optional part, but I think it got some people nervous. oopsies :(

Everyone with wardrobe questions has deferred them to my mom so far…lucky me!

I have told my mom that I want the wedding to be perfume-free. I was slightly sarcastic when I said that, but I really can’t stand perfume and my grandpa’s current wife’s perfume gives me an immediate headache :(

ahhh I am a firm believer in no jeans and no cargo shorts at a wedding! I think a person can slurge into a nice pair of dress pants for guys & either slacks or capris or a dress/skirt for females. It’s only for a couple hours, and it is a celebration!

Nobody has asked me what to wear to the wedding, but my family has apparently decided there needs to be a dress theme for the rehearsal dinner. It happens to be at a Hawaiian restaurant so I think they are all going to show up in Aloha-wear and bring their own leis.

Reminds me of my grandfather’s wedding when I was a pre-teen. The whole family dressed up in a specific color scheme for the rehearsal dinner and a separate color for the wedding. Unfortunately, they bought my dresses too early so I ended up in hideous last-minute purchases just so I could be in navy for the rehearsal dinner and aqua for the wedding. They tried to do it for my wedding, but I nixed that quickly.

I never thought this would become an issue but it’s become a big one for us. Because some people had asked, I put “Attire is semi-formal” on our wedding website. Our wedding is in the evening, on New Year’s Eve. I actually put “semi-formal” because I wanted to indicate to people to dress up, but that wearing a tux or vest was unnecessary (I thought people might dress *too* nice). I’ve been envisioning suits for the men, cocktail style dresses for the women.

And then we get an email from a large group of guests basically saying that our wedding is too fancy for them and they’d have to rent suits and that they can’t afford to dress appropriately. Oh my. Our wedding isn’t that fancy, but I never thought that asking people to dress up for a wedding would be an undue burden! [We basically had to say 'come anyway, wear whatever your 'good' clothes are' to get them to come]

Not sure what to say on our invites. Might go Miss Hammy’s way and say black tie optional. I care what people will be wearing now, but probably won’t notice on wedding day!!!

Okay so we’re getting married in Hawaii too and I had to express that nice beachy clothes would be good. Specifically we had to express to his parents that board shorts, USC colored Hawaiian shirts and a big brimmed straw hat with zinc oxide on the nose were simply not going to be acceptable. I’m hoping his brother will at least take a shower…I might be pushing it with wanting him to shave and brush his hair.

i was asked this, and i said “No dress code”, expecting that guests would maintain certain standards of formality, since it IS a wedding after all, right??? Nope. A coworker turned up in a short sleeved checkered shirt and skinny jeans + chucks, while his wife wore a denim miniskirt and a roundneck tshirt. I was rather shocked but not offended, just puzzled.

I can see how dressing for a destination wedding could be tricky. I haven’t received any attire questions yet :)

We’re doing a dress code to make it easier. It’s cocktail-ish/business casual/semi-formal-ish. Basically no jeans. It’s a wedding for goodness sakes!

Ooo.. I had to put a dress code. Some of our guests cannot be trusted on that front. heehee.. our rehearsal dinner will be a fun surprise though. I love your families/guests questions. Too funny.

The Mraz picture is my favorite. What a silly looking picture!

My momma got some snazzy gladiators at JCPenney and brought them to my house to show me what they look like. She’s wearing them with her ao dai so they won’t show much anyway, but I’m proud of her trendy choice!

My husband’s cousin’s girlfriend (follow that?) wore jeans and a t-shirt. B/c it was hot, we didn’t require formal dress, but whoa some people must have mistaken are semi-formal (Botanic) Garden wedding for a backyard BBQ. I mean WHAT are they saving the good stuff for?? (90% of the weddings at our venue are black-tie.)
