Forgive Me for I Have Sinned

May 5th, 2010 @ 10:11 am by Mrs. Frog

So I bought my dress in May… of 2009. May… as in twelve (TWELVE) months ago. It’s as if I can barely remember what it looks like. And don’t worry, I will include the “story that is my dress” in an upcoming post but for now, I need go to confession.

I’ve been… for lack of a better term, wavering about my dress choice. When I first tried it on, I was completely in love and as time has gone on, I’ve been teased by all of the gorgeous dresses I’m seeing in blogs, magazines and through all of the stalking perusing I do online. My only solace is that I’ve heard this is normal… for the most part… so I tried my best to ignore it all and move on.

Because it’s true, I really did LOVE my dress – but after not seeing it for so long, it’s hard to remember what it looks like… and more importantly, what it makes me feel like when I’m wearing it.

Yeah… I’m weak. I admit it. And yeah… I gave in. There was one dress that just kept popping up and it seemed as though she was beckoning me to find her. She’s been very persistent. I really didn’t have a choice, I’m telling you. It wasn’t me, it was her. I stand by my story.

So while away on business, I called around and found that one bridal salon had her in the store so I made an appointment and anxiously awaited our first date.

I arrived right on time and met Katie, our chaperone. She showed me to a lovely fitting room and I proceeded to undress. I should note this is very unlike my first date with Frogger (much to his dismay – ha!). Katie whisked back the curtain while holding Bali – my date. She was a bit tousled and dingy… also a different color than what I wanted but, it would do.

I decided to try on a few others first, to get a feel for some similar looks – I really wanted to save Bali for last, like dessert. I should also mention, I was lucky enough to have two of my bridesmaids with me who were also in town for the same work event. I just love when that happens.

As I came out with each new dress, the girls did the requisite oohing and aahing. Second to last, I came out with a dress on that was extremely similar to the dress I currently owned and hadn’t seen since last May. They both about fell over. I couldn’t get a word in, they just LOVED this dress. Hmm, this was going to be a tough act to follow… look smart Bali, we’ve got our work cut out for us.

I headed back to the dressing room and met with Bali. Once on, I looked in the mirror.

It’s nice…

That’s really all I could think. It was so different than any other I had tried on, I wasn’t sure if that’s what I liked about it or if it was that I actually liked it on me. I received my answer when I approached the girls.

It’s nice…

That’s about it. They waited for my reaction. And I really didn’t know. I opened up the floor for opinions. They both expressed concern in the cut for the bodice – “it’s REALLY bare, you don’t usually show skin like that - will you be comfortable?” and then scrutiny turned to the seams in the skirt: “are they supposed to show like that?” Yeah, I got my answer.

I tried on the dress that resembled my current dress one more time. It was a resounding YES! I left feeling much better and grateful to my friends for being honest. Afterward, as we were having lunch… okay cocktails… I looked at the photos Bridesmaid Big Apple snuck of me in Bali. It was even more clear to me that it was definitely NOT my dress. It was a beautiful dress and I’ve seen it look absolutely gorgeous on a few different brides including the gorgeous Mrs. Piglet (who was one of the brides that convinced me I needed to try it on) but it was definitely was not flattering on me.

I can’t tell you how much of a relief it was to have checked into it and now know that I have no reason to doubt the choice I made many months ago. {SIGH}

Anyone else a sinner? Anyone else almost cheat on their dress? ‘Fess up.

Glad you went back to “the one” :) I’m sure it was SUCH a relief to know you’d made the right choice in the first place!

I’m in the EXACT same boat as we speak. I haven’t seen my dress in 5 months, I bought it the day I tried it on for the first time. It hasn’t come in yet and another dress I tried on previously, that is completey different, is bugging me! It doesn’t help watching “Say ‘Yes’ to the Dress” every week! I’m glad you remained with your first choice!

I did the same thing, but the outcome, not so much. I ended up with another dress

I believe you should always trust your first instinct. I had the same woes. I purchased my dress on the exact day that was a year in advance to my wedding. I struggled with the idea of my dress for MONTHS, until I finally got it in, and fell back in love with it again. After the alterations women altered my dress, I fell so in love with my dress that I didn’t want to take it off. I refused to for a good 10 minutes. Then I realized “hey, I need to go pick up that dry cleaning.” lol. So, if anything, I’ve learned to always trust your first instinct in the wedding planning process. :-)

I’ve been wavering, but stayed true to my dress. I too bought mine in May 2009 (eek). And I managed to maintain my fidelity by going to visit her a month ago to evaluate what made me waver - and the seamstress said she can fix the source of my concern BEFORE my first fitting!

I’ve looked at other dresses, but never tried on others. I’m afraid to as it might result in dress remorse. Yay for you that your first instinct was solid!

Hey, I think it was a good thing because it made you realize that your dress is the one!

I had the exact same dress. I purchased a dress I adored WAY early, fell in love with pictures of another dress (that seemed to pop up everywhere - funny how that happens), and ultimately decided I had it right the first time.

I half-way blame the whole thing on this idea of “The One” that’s SO freaking pervasive. I never had that moment with my dress, and I took it as a sign, which it certainly isn’t. I’m not the type to get that worked up over something I’m going to wear - it’s beautiful, but it’s still just a dress. It took realizing that for me, there isn’t “The One” to figure out that I had already come as close as I would to finding it. I’m not sure that really makes sense, but I think you probably get what I mean.

And for the record, finally being able to try on MY dress in the privacy of my own home (not some 10-sizes-too-big sample in some strange bridal salon) totally reaffirmed my initial feelings that this was the dress I wanted to wear when I married my best friend. Do you get your dress soon? I think you’re going to feel ten times better when you can try on YOUR dress.

Freudian slip - “I had the exact same PROBLEM.”

I think we’ve all adored Bali after oohing and aahing over Mrs. Piglet’s recaps.

I think it’s great you tried on other dresses and realized your original one was THE one. Can’t wait to see it!

Oh yes. Happened to me too. I bought the Michelle Roth Maya in Aug of ‘08. We had to postpone our wedding until April 10, 2010.

My dress sat at the bridal salon in San Diego (2.5 hours drive from me) for over a year before I even went to visit it.

By the time we started planning the actual wedding I was feeling soooo over that dress. Like you, I “perused” one too many blog and came *this close* to ordering another dress in February.

I was talked out of it. Never tried it on. But was assured by good friends that the Maya was always the only dress for me. Glad they did! I had a blast wearing that thing. And my husband couldn’t stop crying when he saw me.

I’ve had those, “Did I make the right choice?” moments. They definitely are not fun. My dress will be here by the end of the month and I’m suuuper excited but also really nervous about it. I think I made the right choice though (and regardless I’m not allowing myself to try on or purchase another dress ha).

a little reassurance is all you needed, it’s not so much cheating as “checking out the good without touching” ;) such technicalities!

sometimes that feeling you get you know that it’s the one is the one! although I did not get that feeling with my dress, when I put it on that morning, I knew it was the one!!
