Mrs. Taco, San Francisco Age and Occupation: 29, writer/editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 37, editor Engagement Date: May 13, 2009 Wedding Date: August 2010 Venue: The Green Room at the War Memorial Veterans Building About Me: I like laughing and talking with good friends over good food and good drink, be it wine, cocktail, or brew. I write and edit things for fun and profit, but I rarely "write" these days without a keyboard and high-speed internets. Favorites include Mr. Taco, my Boston terrier, San Francisco, getting out of town, and the Roaring ’20s. I was kind-of planning a wedding since roughly 2006, when I discovered "Whose Wedding Is It Anyway?" on the WE channel. I ran and didn't look back with a theme I called "urban vintage," and it culminated in the most magical day a taco could ask for.

What Tattoos?

May 5th, 2010 @ 11:34 am by Mrs. Taco

I enjoy my tattoos, especially this one. I suppose this is a plus, seeing as how they’re, um, not coming off.

So, I never think twice about exposing them, even after some lamented the irreversible damage I inflicted on my skin. Half the professional people in these parts, including my boss, are covered in them, so it’s never been a work issue, either. Nonetheless, there are plenty of brides who cover them up for the day-of, presumably for propriety. Maybe tradition? Photos? Maybe someone’s parents would freak seeing normally covered body art for the first time. I’m sure the reasons are varied.

I think it looks great with wedding dresses because I dig the art, the contrast with white, and, mostly, the personal touch. You can copy dresses, hairstyles, and hairpieces, but you hopefully (right?!) don’t know anyone with the exact same tattoo setup. Par exémple:

My work isn’t that large or this intricate, but it’s definitely visible. Here’s a sampling of one side. More stars crawl upward:

(Note: like a proper anarchist, I’m pretending to erase a happy-birthday message at my friend’s metal-themed birthday party. In my defense, it was already partially erased and presented a golden photo-op.)

Is anyone doing serious body-art reduction for the day-of? Piercing removals, tattoo cover-ups, and the like? Why or why not?

Bad-a$$ tats, Miss Taco! I have two but neither will show in my wedding attire :)

I have 5 Tattoos and 3 will be visable on my wedding day. I would never think of covering them up. They’re part of who I am. Two are on my back and like you I think they look awesome in contrast to the stark white of my wedding dress.

I say rock them out!

Just one, but It will not be making an appearance in the wedding. Lower back=completely covered up by my dress. It’s probably for the best. Although I love, and have never regretted getting it, my entire family strongly disagrees with my decision (ex: my mom crying when she found out about it and saying that she had failed as a mother).

I would LOVE it if my tattoo made an appearance since it totally goes with our theme, but alas it’s on my ribcage and will be covered.

I have 5. One will be very visible on my shoulder, and 2 others may make an appearance if my dress comes up to calf height at some time. The other 2 will make their appearance just to my FI that night ;)

The opposite - I’m actually getting a long delayed tattoo (next month!) on my upper back, which will definitely be visible with my strapless dress.

I have 10 tattos and I can’t really cover up the ones on my forearm, wrist, ankle, or shoulder–nor do I want to. THey’re part of me. And I LOVE them. Now, the FI’s dad is another story, He’s 84 and old-school. But whatever, its my day and i already got his son. lol. Does that sound evil?? :)

I think ‘if you got ‘em, flaunt ‘em’!

I have a friend who decided to have her covered with makeup. Unfortunately, the makeup wore off and you could see the staining on her dress :(

I have one which will be visible in my wedding dress, and like the other ladies I feel it is part of who I am and what got me to this moment!

I have two, but only one that will make an appearance in some pictures (it’s on my foot) but I LOVE it and if any feet/shoe pictures need to be taken, I will choose my left foot just so my tatoo shows, it’s a part of me and it has significance in my family.

i don’t have a tattoo, but i agree with you that the contrast between the white dress/shebang and the funky tattoos makes such a statement. and look at you all sassy!

I guess I’m the only nay-sayer here. I’m not personally a fan of tattoos in general let alone at a wedding, but I fully believe that it’s to each his (or her!) own. I would of course never EVER criticize a bride for choosing to display her tattoos at her wedding.

I think if I had tatoos I would probably hide them for the wedding, but maybe show them off in the engagement or trash the dress session (because I have seen some very awesome pictures with tattoos!

i only have one tattoo, on my wrist, and it will be visible.
However the issue arises with my piercings.. apparently my older relatives think that I ought to take my labret and monroe out. Ha, yeah right.
If I didn’t think it would take forever to heal (again!) I would get my nose re-piereced before the wedding.

I have two tattoos (small of the back and left shoulder blade). My dress is sleeveless and shows most of the angel remembering my grandmother. When my cousin got married last year in Jamaica, all of the girl cousins wore strapless bridesmaids dresses and we got a great picture of our grandmother’s angels in front of the ocean.

@AD: @Cornhusker: Love when there’s a family connection. I have one of those, too, and I tried to sell my parents on them that way ;)

I have three tattoos that will be visible on my wedding day - one on my forearm, upper back, and foot. I am happy with them showing, it showcases who I am. I also have a nose ring, normally I keep a hoop in i, but I will be switching to a rhinestone stud for the wedding….just something a little more subtle.

This is such an interesting post. I love hearing everyone’s different points of view. I do have one but only Frogger will be seeing it…and perhaps my girls when they help me into my dress. :)

I don’t have a tattoo, but I totally agree with you on not covering it - it’s a part of you! My sister (MOH) has one, and I would never dream of asking her to cover it up!

I have a full back tattoo that will be lovingly showcased on my wedding day. I also have a half sleeve started that will probably be added to by the time I do the deed. I don’t hide my tattoos from anyone, not at work or in front of my 90 year old grandma, so I don’t think it’ll be shocking for anyone!
