About Mrs. Trail Mix

You Want WHAT?!?!

May 5th, 2010 @ 11:10 am by Mrs. Trail Mix

That was pretty much my exact response when Mr Trail Mix asked me about ordering yarmulkes for the wedding, only maybe slightly higher-pitched than written words can convey. A yarmulke, also called a kippah, in case ya don’t know, is this:

You Want WHAT?!?! : wedding albany religion Kippot Kippot

(Source)

They are traditionally worn at Jewish services of all types. I thought we had discussed the option of having kippot and nixed it. Mr Trail Mix, rather randomly, decided otherwise, hence my high-pitched reaction to his question about whether I had ordered said yarmulkes yet. Truth be told, it was more of a squawk than anything else…

The simple answer to this question was, “No, dear, I did not.” Which is exactly how I said it, without a trace of sarcasm in my voice.

His query as to why not was only met with the death stare. You ladies know what I’m talking about. :) Upon hearing that we weren’t planning on having them at the wedding, Mr Trail Mix voiced his strong opinion that this was something he wanted.

I’ll be honest, at first I was annoyed. I didn’t budget the extra cash for this expense, I didn’t feel like searching for the cheapest deal and I just plain didn’t want to handle one more detail. I started to protest but fearing a stupid argument might materialize out of this, decided it was better to think about it before fighting the idea.

So I considered it (and consulted Mom Trail Mix). And I realized that Mr Trail Mix has had so few super-strong opinions about any of the wedding details that if this was something he really wanted, I should be a supportive fiancee and make it happen.

And so five dozen yarmulkes (with free printing of our names and wedding dates on the inside) have been ordered and all is well in the Trail Mix wedding world. I suppose I’m glad we’re having them; at least it will make the more traditional relatives happy. Now I just have to figure out some sort of presentation/display for them, most like accompanied by a cute little sign. :)

Was there a random detail your FH suddenly had to have?

he feels really strongly that we should do a garter/bouquet toss. I was a bit shocked - I had not been planning on doing them and thought he’d be indifferent. but no, he reeeeeally wants to do them. so, ok!

Skor cheesecake at the rehearsal dinner. It’s his favourite food, and since it wasn’t going to happen at our wedding reception (because we already have wedding cake, fruit, chocolate fountain, and cream puffs) it has been selected for the rehearsal dinner. For the longest time, whenever I asked him “what do you want at the wedding” his response was always “skor cheesecake”. So that’s what he’s getting!

I’m really surprised you guys wouldn’t. In the grand scheme of things, this is one of the least expensive items and if nothing else, they are the best keep sake items. We ordered 8 dozen, plus one extra in white for FI and it was fast and not at all a hassle. To me, it’s not a Jewish wedding without one; glad you guys are getting them…

Isn’t it priceless when they come out of left field with these requests?

Oh, as to unexpected surprises/requests… after pretty much discounting it and removing the item from my floral list, FI wants to do a bouquet toss. He thinks it’ll be fun and neat, even though we aren’t doing anything for the guys. So despite his lack of help with most everything, I’m indulging - if nothing else so that it give me a leg up on something else… :)

Lambster really wanted dancing which was surprising because he generally dislikes dancing! I had come up with all sorts of fun alternatives and found out not only did he want dancing, but a band as well!

lawn games! He wants corn hole… and somehow managed to warm me up to the idea. Only I really dont want any cheesy college logo painted boards at our elegant garden wedding. His alma mater is red and thats what his buddies have and could bring - it’d clash. but we may still go for it! :)

My FI has put his foot down on so little that I’ve given in to all of it. First, we had to have a night wedding, so goodbye cute historical venue in a residential neighborhood. He wanted me to walk down the aisle to “here comes the bride” so I gave in. But He gave in to things I said “hell no” to as well, such as no tuxedos, no garter or bouquet tosses.

My FI had no opinion about anything until he saw the wedding menu. The steak option was a 7 oz filet. He thinks that that’s too small as his goal for the wedding is for people to leave “drunk and stuffed”. He begged me to go back to the venue and see if their supplier can get 10 oz filets for our wedding.
Nevermind that our guests have cocktail hour, soup, salad, and dessert courses! If an extra 3 oz of meat is what it takes to make him happy, then I’m more than happy to oblige.

Having disposable cameras at the wedding. He is adamant about those!

@denverbirdlet - my FH feels really strongly about the garter toss too. I’d prefer to not do it, but since it’s really the only thing he’s asked for I didn’t want to say no.
But if he’d asked for something that involved research and money, I would have told him “Your budget is X - have fun and leave me out of it!”

If he originally said no, and then changed his mind and waited to tell you until the thirteenth hour, I would have told him that I’ve got too much on my plate to deal with last minute indecision and made him research and order it himself!

Mine wants a nacho bar at the reception for late night munchies (aka drunk food!) I think a nacho bar sounds messy but he’s pretty stuck on this idea! I like the idea of “drunk food” but was thinking of something other than condensed nacho cheese dip!

that’s like my situation–there were so few things that he actually really wanted, so when he did speak up, i knew it was serious!

That’s hilarious! Men! Ugh. But I think you’ll be happy with your purchase. We always take kippot home with us from weddings as a keepsake. We also ordered quite a bit more than we needed for our own wedding, and it’s so fun to pull them out for shabbat or a seder and to have a little reminder of a special occasion.

That is funny, but yes when they only have a few requests it is hard to say no. That’s how i felt with my husband but I let him have some of his needs, like rocky top as our intro song into the reception. lol

Hahaha - sounds pretty familiar. My favorite is “Can’t we just…” - no, we can’t “just” anything! Nothing is a “just” - it took me at least 10 steps of unseen work! Lol.
