About Mrs. Pin Cushion

After my last post on the thoroughly researched and highly scientific theory that the length of engagement has a direct relationship with the length of a relationship, an outpouring of new data was brought to my attention (in the form of your comments). These new data points (92 to be exact) allowed me to develop a new and improved theory:

There is absolutely no relationship, neither direct nor indirect nor anything in between, correlating the length of engagement and the length of a couple’s courtship.

(If anyone can find a relationship in the mess of dots below, speak up, since you all are likely much better mathematicians than I [I bite my thumb in your general direction, Calculus!]).

A Direct Relationship Theory: Revisited : wedding oakland relationships Screen07

[Mind blowing Excel graph, once again, created by yours truly]

Further research needs to be done to determine if there is a relationship between age of the engager or engageee and the length of engagement. Funds are currently being collected to continue this research (and will likely go towards the purchasing of more Chevy’s margaritas, because it is largely possible that the lack of a constant supply of said margaritas was the cause of the downfall of theory #1).

A few fun statistics (if you’re into that kind of thing) from the “data” collected:

  1. The average time a couple was together when they got engaged: 4 years and 1 month.
  2. The average length of engagement: 17 months.
  3. The record for longest engagement goes to pohget, at 6 1/2 years (the data point at the very top of the graph).
  4. The record for longest relationship at the time of engagement goes to Miss International, with 10 1/2 years. Congrats on your longevity, Miss International!

I have no input on this- I read wedding blogs as escapism from college stress, not because I’m anywhere close to becoming engaged or married. However, your usage of “bite my thumb” just caused me to laugh out loud in the library. Thank you, from one Shakespeare nerd to another. :)

Oh, I agreed with your previous chart and, on the basis of my engaged friends and I found it to be quite accurate.

And, I assure you, I do not bite my thumb at you, sir.

Hah I see my dot…. the day of our wedding we’ll have been together 1 year and one month, we were engaged after six months, and decided to get married July 23rd on April 23, three months exactly to plan a wedding. I think I’m a totall outlier when it comes to this graph :) love it though!

thanks to you bees I’m almost completely ready for this wedding, yes, I’m almost 100% ready with your help and suggetsions, I was able to throw this wedding together in no time at all. I suggest short engagements to EVERYONE!!!

What about running it through SPSS and running a regression line? For giggles? To see how strong, if any, correlations were?

What’s that? My WAY inner nerd is showing? I’ll pipe down now.. :)

FYI didn’t comment on the original post, but we were dating 10.5 months and will be engaged just over 7 months when we get married…

I get the feeling if you filtered this data by age brackets and/or life stages, you’d start to see more general trends! I’m guessing that you’re getting a large bias on account of the young’uns in the group, i.e. those who have dated or been engaged all throughout high school/college.

HEHE. These posts make me wildly happy b/c I’m a self-professed econometrics nerd and all this graphing is just right up my alley. :)

hha, thanks for revisiting this! my was only able to talk my way from a 3-month engagement to an 8-month engagement to help accommodate the plethora of diy projects i want to do. then the mister tossed me a bone and gave me 12 months.

i think someone should aggregate the data by age! that would be an interesting cross-section.

How interesting! I would have thought that (un-) proven theory #1 was generally what I’ve seen!
Fun research :)

I didn’t want to say it about theory #1, but I had my doubts. Way to move on to theory #2. :)

I love these stats! This is a very interesting chart and definitely provides some insight! You never know, I can imagine some brides would want to be outliers!

I agreed with your first theory, or at least in that in applied to me, but I didn’t comment on the post. I did, however, have to comment on this one, because I am so entirely impressed with the effort you put into this! Haha, that is most definitely commitment to the ‘bee! This is awesome!

Oh wow. I’m a massive graph nerd, so I love this, but the graph does a lovely job of pointing out how lonely I am up there in “really should get around to getting married” land.
Does the “years together” include the “months of engagement”? I assume not judging by some of the dots. If it doesn’t, my dot needs to scoot over to the left, as we were only together 6 months when we got engaged. But either way, my dot is still a loner.
I also would like to see it include age stats too. Interesting!
I like your style Miss Pin Cushions!
