Mrs. Veggie's Picture
Mrs. Veggie, Raglan, New Zealand/Scranton, PA Age and Occupation: 27, Director of Small Non-Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 42, PhD Student & Farmer Engagement Date: June 13, 2009 Wedding Date: August 2010 Venue: Indian Head Camp, Honesdale Pennsylvania About Me: I am a tree-huggin' farmer turned enthusiastic wedding-planner. I live in a house truck and wear flip-flops more often than shoes. In my old life I was a high school Spanish teacher in love with a crazy guy who lived off-the grid on a farm in New Hampshire. But, we decided to mix things up a bit, quit our jobs and move to New Zealand. My southern hemisphere lifestyle involves growing veggies, teaching, running our small non-profit, and surfing. I love laughing, singing, playing, and the inspirational Mr. Veggie (of course!). For our wedding, I am committed to throwing a killer party that celebrates our values without breaking the bank. Look forward to an eco-thrifty summer-campy weekend-long extravaganza.

Taming the Train

May 6th, 2010 @ 6:44 pm by Mrs. Veggie

For some reason none of the pictures of my dress online ever showed the train. And since I never actually tried on my dress before buying it, I got a little surprise when I put her on for the first time.

Oh yeah, that’s right. Baby got back. And I’m not sure how I feel about it.

Not only is it the train super long, but the way that it comes out from the bodice kid of reminds me of this thread.

The pointy-ness and the fact that it comes from right around my bung-hole kind of makes me looks like I’m farting a big piece of fabric. Plus, I’ve never really pictured myself with long train, especially since we’re having an outdoor ceremony and a barn dance. Even when its bustled it still didn’t feel right to me.

I suppose it didn’t help that Mr. Veg let me know in no uncertain terms how he felt about it (Note to all men: don’t tell a bride that any part of her dress looks “silly”, even if you’re only talking about what you think is a minor detail, and even if you preface it with the words “kind of”).

Anyhow, lucky for me that one of our good friends here is a seamstress and will be doing all my alterations. When I went in yesterday to get my first fitting I voiced my concerns and we had a bit of a play. She said she could easily remove the train all together, but was worried about how the seam would look. It was important to me that whatever we did, it kept the light feel of the dress and didn’t add tons of fabric to my butt or hips. In the end, this is what we came up with.

She is going to leave the train on, but tuck it under and sew it so that it ends up coming out from under the top layer of the dress. This makes the pointy-ness less noticeable and shortens the train. Sorry I didn’t get any pictures, but I did whip up these handy drawing in MS Word so you can see what I’m talking about.

So, what do you think? Am I crazy and over analyzing a detail of my dress that no one else will notice? Am I being swayed too much by Mr. Veggie’s comments and an unrelated Weddingbee thread? Am I destroying the designer’s intention for the dress by changing the train? Do you have any other suggestions on altering the train?

I think that’s called a french bustle, and it will look great!

I think you’re right about the train. It comes out of the back of the dress in a strange spot. I think your alterations make sense–it solves that problem and shortens your train without totally taking it away.

Hey that’s my thread!!!!! yay!!! HAHA! I think you dress looks better with the bustle. Please don’t let my thread influence your decision, I never wanted that to happen!! It is your dress and you should do what you think is best. Good luck!!

Beautiful dress! But yeah, the train is pretty intense. I think the bustle will look much better, and even getting rid of the whole thing would work, imo.

I like your proposed train much better than the existing one, which is a little tail-like. Your farting out fabric comment made me lose it at work. :)

that would have bothered me too [and i probably would have complained about pooping fabric] so no worries. i’m also a fan of this new bustle.

You do what you need to do to make the dress *your* dress, and you’ll be happy and that’s what matters about a wedding dress, in my opinion. Good luck with the alterations!

I had my train taken off and was soooo much happier! I just couldn’t handle all the fuss and bustles!

I think the proposed bustle will definitely work!
The “farting” bustle idea totally cracked me up, btw.

Like you, I had an outdoor wedding and had the train cut off my dress (it was tehcnically made into a ’sweep’ train). Perfect for outdoors—I think you’ll be really happy with it the way you’re proposing!

I think it was mentioned already, but it’s called a french bustle (I worked in a bridal salon after college). It usually turns out beautifully.

I think it will look great!

I Love dresses with unique back views, but gotta say….not loving this one. Your solution is gorgeous though! Way to go, you’re gorgeous :)

That is actually why I’ve always wanted a ‘french’ bustle. I’ve seen one too many flimsy thin lace gowns with 1-3 pieces of fabric attached to the bride’s butt. I never thought that made sense! But your dress is different and doesn’t look strange at all. With all the poofiness you are creating underneath it will look so beautiful!!

Oh, or…your seamstress can find some way to roll up the tail and you can pull it out later in the evening, like a magic trick! But seriously, I’m still giggling about the fabric fart and I think your solution will be gorgeous.
