Celebrating Weddings Past

May 6th, 2010 @ 1:47 pm by Mrs. Seashell

I love the idea of including family photos from the weddings of parents, grandparents, and other family members in our wedding. There are many ways to do so as posted by Miss Argyle and Mrs. Spaniel. In my searching I’ve also come across these:

1. Photos strung on a line. First, I love this option because it was taken at our venue, the Glen Manor House. Additionally, it offers guests something fun to stumble upon while they enjoy cocktails or take a break from dancing.

2. Around the cake. One of my bridesmaids did this at her wedding. It was adorable! The cake was on display all night, and as guests went to take a closer peek they also enjoyed a glimpse of photos from the weddings of the parents and grandparents of the bride and groom.

3. Framed photos on a tree. Talk about a “family tree”! Cute, no? This one seems pretty straightforward: nail family photos to a tree. It’s super rustic, and oh-so-memorable.

Are you including family photos in your wedding day? How are you using them?

I love the cake table idea! Trees aren’t an option for our venue and a memory table seems so sad by itself. Thanks for the idea :)

I love all of these! And… I’m pretty sure the vines on that tree are poison ivy.

I like this idea, but I don’t want to do it since my fiance’s parents are divorced. :( too bad!

We’re getting married in front of a fireplace. For the ceremony, I’m taking down the venue’s wooden drake (uh.. no.) and putting up framed wedding photos from both sides of the family. We think it’s a romantic touch that also adds to the vintage feel of the ceremony.

Also, I agree with poormarylane… I hope whoever put those photos up was careful…

We’re including them with our guest book. Sign and look at pictures from weddings past! I have my parents, aunts/uncles, grandparents and great-grandparents. Unfortunately, we only have photos from FH’s parents, one set of grandparents and his sister. So it will be a little “bride heavy”.

@ sunnydebs - We ran into that with my fiance’s grandparents. We decided to just honor those marriages that had enured, including a few of their re-marriages.

I also once saw a wedding where the bride and groom had displayed photos of famous married couples who had made it for the long haul.

Hmm sounds like I’m not the only one struggling with how to make this work for less traditional families. I was thinking of just having individual photos from when our parents and grandparents were young, and de-emphasizing the marriage bit.

I love this..unfortunately because of wars we don’t have wedding photos of our grandparents, so I found pictures of them when they were young and first in love and I am putting those around our cake.

I want to do this, too! Probably around the cake table since my venue is inside. My fiance’s parents are divorced as well. I was thinking of doing all of our grandparents since they are all deceased - a way to honor them.

i love this idea!!! we are having our ceremony on my childhood front lawn which make me want to nail the pics to a tree.. but will people really go up to look at them? I don’t really “get up to look around” when I’m at a ceremony. I’m leaning towards the cake table.. easy low cost decoration!

I really love this idea! I especially love the look of the frames in the trees, though I don’t think I could bring myself to stick nails in the poor things haha ; )

I’m doing this too! It’s so fun to get all the pics together and see the old-fashioned clothes, etc…I got two large frames and am putting together a memory board to pin them up on…

We’re doing this too, though the pics won’t just focus on past family weddings. My parents divorced a couple of years ago so I’d feel funny about doing wedding photos only.

@charismaclassic: @Emily L.: I love the idea of the celebrity couples. My parents are divorced and I’ve always thought it might be bad luck and kinda weird to display their wedding photo. Emily, the younger years photos are a good idea.

Please don’t put nails in the poor trees.

Otherwise I think this a beautiful tradition and I think using young photos neatly solves the divorce issue (also a factor for us) I also really love including baby and childhood pictures of the bride and groom and potentially sibs, cousins, etc. as well.
