A Petaled Pomander

Our flower girl is 3 years old. Certainly, it is a precious age, and I have no doubt that she (and her brother) are going to steal the show at our ceremony. Because Flower Girl A is so young, I thought it was safe to assume that she doesn’t yet understand the concept of a flower girl, and that they typically scatter petals down the aisle. So, I opted to create a pomander for her to carry. I am happy to report that this was one of my easiest projects to create!

I utilized the following materials:

  • 5″ Styrofoam ball (you can use bigger/smaller depending on what you prefer)
  • ribbon (about a yard)
  • screwdriver
  • silk flowers
  • hot glue gun

Now, for the instructions:

1. Using a long screwdriver, carefully punch a hole through the Styrofoam ball from one end to the other.

2. With either the screwdriver or another thin instrument (we used the end of a garage sale sign stake that was sitting around), fold the ribbon over the end of the utensil and push through the hole. A loop will be created at one end of the pomander this way, with a tail of remaining ribbon at the other end.

3. Pull the loop/handle to desired length and tie a knot at the opposite end of the pomander (the “tail” end). Cut the ribbon ends to make a tail of desired length

4. Pop the silk flowers off of the stems. Punch a small hole in the styrofoam ball (with either the flower itself, or the end of a pencil, etc.) where you’d like the flower placed. Remove the flower and fill the hole with a dot of hot glue. Place the flower bud in the glue. Let dry.

5. Repeat this process to cover the entire Styrofoam ball. Make sure that the Styrofoam is not visible at different angles.

Voila! Your pretty petaled pomander is complete and ready for its walk down the aisle with the flower girl!

That looks great! Our flower girl, when asked if she wanted a pomander ball, asked if she could throw petals instead. We said she most certainly could, but she only 100% agreed to it if we made sure there were no rocks in the petals!

I am having 5 flowergirls (please don’t ask how it snowballed into effect… it’s crazy) and since they are ranging in age from 3 years to 6 years I decided to go with the pomander as well. My colors are red and white and we are using peppermint carnations.

However, I might just need to make a trip to the craft store and try and do this myself.

My wee doggie is just going to be decorated with flowers (whatever my florist ends up making for her). As cute as the pomanders are, they are almost as big as she is!

ohhhh, that is so very very pretty! I haven’t seen one yet that has the ribbon tail as well, so that’s a really neat twist

looks great, I will be doing this too for my nieces! And possibly for isle decorations, cheap and fun to look at!

I’m having a flower girl, but anticipate her to throw flower petals. Probability of that happening, extremely slim. Lol!

We are having 2 flower girls, aged 2 and 3. This should be interesting! But we’re having them carry pomanders too, although with fresh flowers.

(And they’re also wearing Cinderella dresses that I found at JC Penney for like $20!)

I am having my 2 nieces ages 3 & 1.5 yrs and my fiance’s baby cousin who is 2 yrs old be flower girls. We also are doing the pomander for the same exact reason you are…figure they wouldn’t undersant the throwing petals down the asile concept. Fingers cross they none of them cry while going down the asile.

Both my flowergirls (sigh) will be 2, so pomanders are a must. In my head I DIY, but in reality I will probably hand this task off to the florist as my wedding is long-distance and I would be so heartbroken to open the suitcase to one of these pretties smushed. Plus, I’m lazy :P

I saw pomanders in a local bridal boutique for $50. And they were terrible quality neon colours. Definately going to DIY, as our flower girls will be 2 and 5 at the wedding.

@tashawilson: They hold the loop that you make at the one end!

@tea: At one point I did price out an actual flower pomander…and promptly decided to DIY one instead….haha!
