Look What I Found!

May 7th, 2010 @ 9:12 am by Mrs. Seashell

I’m so excited to find another example of a non-bustled dress! I think I’ve closed in on what it is: a wrist loop. (Side note: Apparently I’m living under a rock. Yes, I really didn’t know a wrist loop existed until recently.)

A wrist loop was featured on Clare’s dress in The Time Traveler’s Wife. Brides.com says: “At the reception, the newlyweds dance in a garden lit with romantic paper lanterns. Removing her veil for the reception, Clare also lifts the skirt of her wedding dress with a special wrist loop that Weiss added so that the bride could dance easily.”

I’ve Googled a bit, and haven’t found much else on my beloved “wrist loop”. I did find a thread on Yahoo! Answers that was very-anti wrist loop, but I remain enamored.

I have concluded that there are two major factors that should be considered in the wrist loop versus bustle decision:

  1. Length of dress train
  2. Weight of dress

I haven’t revealed my dress yet, but I can say that it does meet this criteria (i.e. it’s not very long, or too heavy). Being anti-bustle, I’m definitely optimistic that this is a great option. I’m a girl who is happy to carry a clutch, or a purse that fits in the nook of my arm so I don’t think I’d be bothered by having something to “carry”.

What are your thoughts on the wrist loop? Have you seen them before?

It’s a very elegant look! My dress has a train and it actually has a loop sewn into the underside already. The loop is used on the hanger to help support some of the weight, but for me, it would be too heavy to carry all night and I want to have my hands free for dancing and hugging :)

I worked in a bridal salon after college. We had requests here and there for them, but we mostly recommended a bustle for the comfort and convenience of the bride. Have you explored all your bustle options? The most beautiful and elegant is called a French Bustle. One of the other Bees posted about it last night. You’ll be busy hugging, and dancing, and holding a glass, it’s easier to have it behind you freeing your arms, it’s also better for the dress not to have the weight supported by one point of ribbon or cording.

That said, if that’s the look you want (I think it looks so much like Cinderella dancing with her prince- very romantic!) and you’ll be comfortable all night, the go for it! It wouldn’t hurt, though, to have a plan B, just in case. =)

Her loop looks very secure… good idea for 2! I agree though, have a plan B, just in case.

I had a wrist loop on my dress…I thought it would be great, but I spent the whole night untangling it from everything. It would get twisted around my wrist to the point it was cutting off my circulation. It was also difficult to dance with.

I hate to rain on your parade, but the idea of it IS very romantic! But it turned out to be just a big pain in the butt!

Love that movie! I have known of some brides that actually used the loop that is meant to hang the train on a hanger as this (but it is on the underside so it looks a little inside out when on a wrist). Just a warning, your wrist might be killing you by the end of the night!

I’ve been silently debating the wrist loop myself. I think it’s so pretty and romantic!

I had a wrist loop (also called a dancing loop), but I also had a bustle. I used the loop for getting to the ceremony, getting in and out of the car, and as peace of mind in case my bustle broke (it didn’t but it was nice to have it there as back-up). I would not have used it to replace the bustle. My dress was all lace with some beading, so it was on the heavier side, but still I can’t imagine it being light enough to be comfortable on any dress. If you want to go fo it, I’d recommend having a thicker band used (they tend to be thin cords or beaded bracelets). A wider band would be more comfortable (but it wouldn’t look as nice when the train is down).

I love love love that movie, and the book! And I definitely love the wrist loop idea. It’s super romantic! I’ve known about them since I was a little girl, my favourite bridal Barbie had one on her dress! It was one of my favourite features haha ( :

I like the idea of a wrist loop! I think it would actually drive me crazy, but I think it looks great!

This isn’t necessarily that useful for you… but one (high-end, all-custom) dress shop told me that they could make my train DETACHABLE. I was blown away. How come no one does that??

As for the wrist loop, I think it’s very pretty, as long as you’re completely sure it won’t drive you crazy :)

FMIL of Miss Seashell..

wrist loops are actually a very “old fashioned” concept… they were on dresses before bustles became popular… probably my mother had one on her dress and she had a long train…. it was a common way to deal with the long dress then…

I”m also planning on looking into this idea, it just depends on what dress I purchase!

@mander411: EXCELLENT tip! I bet a lot of brides confuse the hanger loop for a wrist loop. I’m guessing that would explain why many complain it is so uncomfortable! Looking at the photo above, two thick, sturdy ribbons seem to offer a nice solution :)

A friend of mine had a wrist loop for her train. Her dress was very light weight and it worked perfectly for her!

Love the wrist loop! The bustle of my dress was such a pain… and ended up ripping at some point throughout the night. Looking back, I would’ve added a wrist loop somehow. :)

I had a wrist loop that came on my dress for my first marriage. I was torn between having that or a bustle this go round.

I never wanted a bustle either, but then I fell in love with a dress that has a small train. My dress already has a loop in it, and after reading your posts I was considering skipping the bustle and just using the loop. My only concern is how it’s going to look as I move around during the day (you can kind of see under the dress when it’s looped). Does anyone have any full length pics of the loop in action??
