About Mrs. Lobster

Our Florist Has ESP

May 7th, 2010 @ 11:28 am by Mrs. Lobster

I have this nagging feeling in me that I couldn’t let go. I’ve had thoughts about other venues/weddings.

Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE our venue. But I did once have champagne wishes and caviar dream weddings including a “late evening estate garden wedding” or “big field tent wedding with lanterns with twinkle lights.” So how could I indulge myself a little in those garden outdoor wedding fantasies in our indoor and modern venue?

This is where the expertise of our florist comes into play. First, she was highly recommended from the venue (and also I had to choose from a pre-determined list so they were familiar with her work). And second, she had great reviews online so I knew I was in capable hands.

How to Spot a Good Florist: She can put into words floral likes and dislikes that sound like this:

Me:
“I think I like this but different”
“I do NOT like that”
“Whoa. That is way too many flowers.”
“Ooh. What’s that?”
“Yeah, that floaty thing”
“The flower is… round. With a black thingy. Enemy flower?” (Anemone.)
“Pinks and purples but not *too* pinks and purple, you know?” No, she doesn’t know. But she did!

Mr. Lobster:
“Uh huh”
“Yeah I like that”
“How does the flower glow like that?” Candles, “Ohhhh, wow”
“Eh”
“What is that white fluffy flower?” Peony? “No, not that one” Hydrangea? “No, not that one. On this page…” Yes, hydrangeas just a lot of them bunched together. “Oh… oh.”

LOLOL. We are sooooo helpful. After giving her all this glorious help, the florist pieced together some key components to achieve that feeling I can’t describe:

  • Candles. LOTS of candles. Candles are an inexpensive and easy way to add those squishy, romantical feelings.
  • Mismatched flowers in bold colors set up in non-traditional ways
  • Multiple containers, high and low heights, floating blooms, tiers
  • Simple and clean shapes without looking too arranged

She called my style “understated and modern with a garden feel.” Sure, I can go with that.

Did your florist have to use her ESP abilities on you or did you actually use words and sentences?

Purple. Blue. Not to poufy. But round. Roses? Meh. What else have you got?
Ribbon - yes ribbon! You can wrap it or something . . .

I’m looking forward to seeing how my nonsensical ideas become actual bouquets.

haha - this sounds exactly like our florist meeting. i was just like, “any flower is fine as long as it’s purple and not a rose or a calla lilly.” i think she called my style, “vintage, but modern”…. i don’t even know what that means, but i’m going with it as well.

I literally told my florist one sentence . .
Me.” I want vintage garden chic with low bunchy flowers.”

She walks into the back for about 5 minutes and comes out with an armful of flowers and an amazing sketch, it was EXACTLY what I wanted. I mean , wow, how did she do that?!!

Our florist kept practically begging for more details from us, but I was like, you do this all the time, here’s the check, go.

And everything was perfect. She had ESP and didn’t even know it.

Your florist sounds amazing! Mine is pretty good about deciphering my nonsense descriptions of stuff. She is such a trooper.
