About Mrs. Starfish

Registry Temptations

May 8th, 2010 @ 5:45 pm by Mrs. Starfish

Last month, Mr. Starfish and I closed on our first home. (Yay!) What does this have to do with weddings? Well… not much, but it has a lot to do with our registry. I’ve mentioned before that we don’t have any basics. In college, we lived in a shore town that had everything included when you rent an apartment (due to also being a summer rental), including everything from furniture to cookware. After college, we moved in with Starfish Mom to save up for our little dream home and again didn’t have a need to buy any housewares.

So what is a soon-to-be-wed couple to do when they have nothing to put in their new place? Hmmm… one word comes to mind—registry. Over the past year, we’ve created our dream list of items for our future (now actual) home. We’ve searched and searched for the perfect place settings, glassware, bedding, lamps, trash cans, cookware, ironing board, etc.

My bridal showers are both in June, and between our closing date and the shower there is about a 3 month lapse of living in our home with nothing. So we started buying.

We’ve bought two place settings, pots and pans, a cutting board, dish towels, oven mitts and a few more misc. items—just some basics to get by. Thankfully we’ve been talking about moving out for the past two years and have accumulated quite a few gift cards to BB&B and Crate & Barrel from birthdays and Christmases, and even more luckily, Sister Starfish had done some upgrading on her registry and gave us some flatware and glassware to hold us over, too!

Has anyone else been tempted to buy items off their registry?

Yeah, totally have been tempted. For example we just bought a king size bed and we need linens for it - but our wedding’s not until September! I am thinking of buying some nice but cheap ones from TJ Maxx to hold us over, and registering for more luxurious ones!

Totally with you - we’re moving right before the wedding, and will have to bring old stuff with us because we haven’t received most of the new stuff yet…oy! and CONGRATS on your new house!!

We had most stuff, so our registry is pretty sparse. About a month ago my popcorn maker died, so I thought that would be a perfect thing to add to the registry. However, I’m a popcorn addict, so I’m definitely getting the itch. I told my mom the other day that if it doesn’t show up by the shower, I can’t last any longer!

haha, I totally feel you on the empty house thing!! We are moving into our new apartment tomorrow and we don’t have a single piece of living room furniture. Not that I was planning on putting a couch on the registry, but I certainly wouldn’t argue if someone wanted to buy us one. Right now I will call our living room design “zen” (That’s code for completely freakin empty)

I bought a cookbook off our registry because it was no longer available from Crate & Barrel online and wasn’t available in any stores in our area… and I found it at a local bookstore for half price! I couldn’t help myself. I told my fiance that it was our “first wedding gift” and he thought I was nuts.

Are you kidding? I’ve totally been buying things off the registry because he just moved into the apartment we’ll be living in after the wedding… it’s currently pretty bare and there were things we could not wait for someone else to buy off the registry.

My whole thing is, why spend money to buy one to “tide us over” when we could spend money on what we actually want/registered for? I’m a registry cheater!

I’m trying not to buy stuff off of our registry (we’re not even finished completing it), but it’s hard. We have a lot of things so we registered for items we need. We were going to have a crock pot and an electric skillet on the registry but our engagement/housing party got out of control with RSVPs so we needed them for serving.

I’ve been totally tempted to buy stuff off our registry. Somehow I’ve managed to hold back, but it’s been hard!

I totally want to buy things off our registry, but will try to restrain myself until after the wedding. We’ll see how that holds up…

I keep getting coupons from our Macy’s registry — so tempting when I know we’d be able to get a better discount than if our guests bought the same thing!!
Must resist…

we registered at myregistry.com and didn’t add too many gift card but 1/4 of the items on there have been purchased by us - we needed them so why not? good for you for doing your own thing and congrats! :)
