You So Pretty

May 8th, 2010 @ 7:00 pm by Mrs. Frog

Anyone else overwhelmed by the prospect of looking perfect on your wedding day? The beauty routine alone is enough to cause moments of paper bag breathing. Perhaps I’m just not one of those look-at-my-perfect-skin-and-movie-star-white-teeth brides.

I know I should be washing my face and exfoliating and primping and prissing but I have to be honest, most nights all I want to do after a long day of work is crawl into bed and shut my eyes.

I don’t want to brush my teeth. I don’t want to put on teeth whitener. I don’t want to wash my face. I don’t want to exfoliate. I don’t want to apply eye cream. I don’t want to tweeze my eyebrows. I just want to sleep. And you know what… there are more nights than I care to admit that that’s exactly what I do. Please tell me I’m not alone.

The same goes for my workout routine. Of course, I use the term “routine” lightly as it’s more of a when-I’m-interested-in-getting-out-of-bed-early type of thing.

The downside to this is that when I don’t do these things, I can immediately see a difference (and feel a difference). So I’ve devised a way to help create a mental picture that will keep me going in the moments when all I want to do is snooze.

  1. Remind myself of how great I feel when I’m eating right, exercising and taking care of my body. I have more energy, my clothes fit better and my spirits are overall pretty high.
  2. Revisit bathing suit photos from last summer and realize this summer is just mere months away… helloooo honeymoon.
  3. Watch shows and read blogs that provide pure motivation for getting back into a regular habit of overall health… anyone participated in 100 pushups? Talk about killer upper body for a strapless dress.
  4. And, when all else fails, I take a weekend for me. I make lists. I run errands. Go for a walk. Read a book. I get my life back on track, in a good place and start fresh. We’re talking squeaky clean – it’s never too late to begin again, my friends.

Anyone else have motivation secrets to share? After a full day of work and spending spare time planning a wedding, I think all brides can relate to the mile-long list of to-dos and agree that the easiest ones to neglect are the ones just for you… am I right?!

ughh, I am with you on this one. I know that I should go through the routine of washing, moisturizing, scrubbing my face every night, and brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash for my teeth. But seriously? I am just sooo tired at the end of the day its all i can do sometimes to stay awake long enough to take out my contacts and crawl into bed.

One thing that motivates me slightly, although I am unsure of the validity of this statement, is that I read that not washing your skin at night ages in an extra 7 days. All the dirt, pollutants, dead skin cells, and oil on your pores gets soaked into your skin every night and makes you look older, faster!!! Now if that doesn’t gross you into washing your face, then I don’t know what will. Sadly, even that doesn’t do the trick for me some nights, I love my sleep THAT much

LOL I feel that way sometimes too. I also notice a difference when I don’t take care of myself. I have started going to the gym again and it feels great! My motivation is our wedding (what I’ll look like in my dress) and how I need to lose weight so I can justify spending so much on a photographer LOL. I seriously say these things to myself while I am at the gym to get myself to go an extra 10-20 mins on cardio machines. So to push myself as far as I can go with my dumb bell exercises. I am surprised at how motivated the wedding has made me :) That and having kids we have decided to TTC after the wedding and being fit for my soon to be husband and future children motivates me. I really let myself go and now I have a lot of work to do but I finally found the motivation.

Good Luck with your routines.

My motivation was spending an obscene amount of money on a videographer I love, and the prospect of looking unsightly for countless generations after paying for the priviledge. And ONE…and TWO… :P

Guilty. I do the same thing sometimes. I have zero desire to do anything but lay my head down and pass the heck out!

Guilty too! I’m also, besides being a bride to be, a mom, work alot, am on emergency call sometimes, and there are days where I literally am in my scrubs until the second I decide to put on something else for bedtime.

After we move, settle in, I feel I’ll have maybe 6 weeks to dedicate for “me” time whipping this ol’ gal into glam mode!

In the meantime, I’m trying. I did go for a long walk today very briskly for 2.5 miles! Doing it again in the morning :)

I’ve been trying to make a fitness routine, but I’ve been pretty faithful to my new skin care routine. I started doing the oil cleansing method a few months ago and I’ve noticed a positive change in my skin.

Most days I just want to crawl into bed, but I try to take showers at night so I don’t have an excuse not to wash/exfoliate/apply a mask, etc. Its all about constant vigilance >:D

The gym routine can be hard to get goin’ for sure, but for the skin and bedtime stuff, why not do ‘em a little before you’re at the “omg get me to my pillow right now” point? Like right after dinner (hey might help with your eating right goal too!).

I haven’t changed my face/teeth routine for the wedding. I still just wash and brush. :X Feels like a sin as a bride to be don’t it! haha.

After Miss HW’s post about the 100 push up challenge, I started it! So far I’ve done the first week but I can already see a little change!

I am so right with you on this one. My pre-bedtime routine doesn’t exist, especially since I’m often writing papers into the wee hours of the night and am lucky to even make it to the bed. The only thing I’ve been motivated to do is change my eating habits: after some not-so-flattering epics that came back, I had a visual that I could keep in my mind every time a cookie came my way. All it took to get me started was making a hard rule not to eat after 7:30pm — even that made a big difference. Now I have to try and motivate myself to wear my retainer, apply nighttime eye cream, whiten my teeth, and get tan. I think the getting tan part will supercede the others, but I’m going to try!

Oh oh. I’m reading this post while eating Cheetos.

I just set them aside. Perhaps I should lift a weight or two instead?

yes you are definitely not alone on this one. Some nights i don’t wash my face, and eeek! don’t brush my teeth. But you are right, i get out of that rut when i remind myself how good it feels to have a good workout in, a fresh face, and squeaky clean teeth every morning and night. but it does take a little push because its so easy to get lazy..tomorrow is a new day i always tell myself, and start fresh!

On the other hand, sleep is pretty much the #1 requirement for looking and feeling good. If everything else seems like way too much effort, maybe you want to try to set aside more time for sleep. I’m a total exercise addict - at the point where a day or two off makes me feel awful long before anything would affect my conditioning - which makes me more alert and sleep better. But I also know that if getting up to work out pushes me below 6 hours of sleep, it’s a bad idea.

I totally share the want to collapse vs. do beauty stuff. So I keep it simple - wash face, brush teeth, floss once a day, put on moisturizer w/ sunscreen in the mornings. If I added teeth whitening and exfoliating and whatever else, yeah, not happening.

No, you’re not alone. I try to remember, but sometimes I come home tipsy and just collapse before I even wash off my makeup >:P

I think of it this way: You only get one skin, and if you take care of it every day, it will thank you. I used to spend more time on makeup and not think about skincare. I was reading an article about French beauty and why French women have such a glow; it explained that they focus 90% on skincare and protection and 10% on makeup. So when I’m feeling lazy (or frickin exhausted), I remind myself that the tiny steps really do make a difference.

If I’m in a hurry, I just swirl my serum, sunscreen and foundation together instead of doing each step separately. It’s super quick and I figure it couldn’t hurt.

Hope my mantra is helpful for any other bees :)

Girl!! I totally feel you! Sweets are like the doom to my dedication. One bite and I’m like this sooo beats working out. So what if I gain a pound by eating this??? Then afterwards, I’m like crap! Sigh…. Things we do for beauty!

Amen, sister. After a long day of work, meetings, wedding related tasks, making dinner, etc., the last thing I want to do is spend an additional half hour primping before bed. I mean, hello! The bed is practically calling my name. But I do feel and look better when I stop and take time for myself and I’m vowing to start doing better - starting today!

ugh, I hear ya! The motivating factor for me, besides my own wedding, is that one of my close friends is getting married the first weekend of October so I need to get in shape for that first and then hopefully that motivation will just carry over to my own wedding. I try to take two fifteen minute walk breaks at work since I sit for the majority of the day.

I still can’t get into flossing my teeth though.

I totally understand how you feel! My mother was making sure that I was not scratching my arms or legs or my face and if she saw a blemish she would freak out. she would make me floss and make sure I was sratch and blemish free
