About Mrs. Hermit Crab

The Venue Hunt

May 9th, 2010 @ 11:30 am by Mrs. Hermit Crab

I was standing on the top floor of a beautiful building in downtown Manhattan gazing over the lights and the buildings as far as the eye could see, and I knew then, I had to be married in New York City. The fact that I had yet to find someone to marry was aside the point, this I knew for certain—whoever, whenever, we would be in good ol’ New York City.

One of the first things we discussed after returning from our blissful engagement weekend in Ottawa was our wedding venue. Several years after that moment gazing out over the Manhattan skyline, and now actually knowing who I would be marrying, I was still convinced that I wanted to be married with a New York City backdrop. Thankfully, Mr. Hermit Crab felt a similarly strong connection to the area, and we (alright, alright, I) began to do research.

We knew that we had to find a venue that could fit at the very least 250 people, preferably up to 300 (I know, small wedding!). This fact narrowed our search from the start, as New York City isn’t exactly known for spacious real estate. We also knew that our parents would not be willing to go [totally] broke for this wedding, so it had to be somewhat (read: it’s all relative) reasonable in terms of price.

We eventually narrowed it down to seven places that we visited and one stood out far above the rest: the New York Botanical Garden!

Our day would look something like this (of course, rain not being an issue!):

Our cocktail hour, including the Jewish traditions of Tisch, Bedeken and Ketubah signing, would take place in the tented area and the surrounding gardens (more on these traditions soon, and in the meantime, please read about them from Mrs. Hot Cocoa).

Following the cocktail hour, all of our guests would go down a cobblestone path adorned on both sides by flowers and our ceremony would happen under the Chuppah in the private garden.

For the rest of the afternoon, our guests will enjoy food and dancing in the reception hall and surrounding gardens.

Did you just know when you arrived at your wedding venue? Did you both agree right away or did you have to convince one another?

I just knew! I went searching at a lot of different venues and was so disappointed. I remember having a conversation with my mother where we were both like: “I know we don’t want to settle…but we might have to settle.”
Luckily, in the 11th hour a new venue opened, and it was perfect. BEYOND perfect!

We knew where we wanted to have our reception, but forced ourselves to look at other options before booking (as we had falled in love with the location at a client’s wedding before we were ever engaged!) but at the end of searching, we ended up booking The Pines, exactly where we had thought in the beginning!

We were married at the Chicago Botanic Garden! (We only considered 3 places and looked at 2.) The NY Botanic Garden looks beautiful. Our reception was outdoors (tented), and there was a *little* rain. The Chgo. Garden has no indoor venue.

We looked at five places and chose the second one we went to. I had “that feeling” when I was there, but I don’t think my fiancee was quite as convinced. We’re both really happy with our decision, though.

lol we physically went and looked at over 80 different places for our wedding! We had no idea how picky we really were until we started our venue search! The place we ended up with is the exact right choice for us though–it suits us through and through!

I love the botanical garden! It looks beautiful–I can’t wait to see it on your day!

Our friends had their wedding at the botanical garden, and it was GORGEOUS. It was a beautiful, slightly cool spring day, and the garden area was just perfect for the ceremony. You guys are going to have a stunning backdrop for your day.

The last venue I looked at was perfect. ..an antique building that once was a Farmers Market with a huge ballroom already decorated with white lights and paper lanters.

We both just knew! Our 2nd weekend of looking at venues, my mom came along with us. The venue we picked was head and shoulders above the rest, with gorgeous, elegant spaces and amenities.

I knew where I wanted to get married, and at the time Mr. Mayor just agreed with everything I wanted. (He doesn’t seem to do that anymore….)
