Working on My Fitness

May 10th, 2010 @ 3:52 pm by Mrs. Frog

Yes, it’s true. I’ve joined the throngs of brides-to-be who are in crunch time (no pun intended) to get in shape for the wedding. At the beginning of the year I decided to change my eating habits and see what kind of an impact it would make. I wasn’t really looking for a physical change, more just interested in feeling better. And I must say, just changing my food choices has had a pretty significant impact. Am I crazy, has anyone else experienced this?

Okay, so I don’t exactly look like her. But here are the small things I’ve done so far food wise… then we’ll explore… ugh… exercise. Can you see how thrilled I am about the physical activity part?

I’ve cut out or tried to limit the following:

  • red meat
  • white flour (and related items like white bread, standard pasta, etc.)
  • white rice
  • excessive carbs (how I miss thee)
  • wine (that’s a painful one…I’m not crying, my eyes are just watering a little…move along, nothing to see here)

It may help that I don’t drink coffee or soda – just not my thing. And I’m not a big sweets person, I’m more of the savory type so I’ll pass on a big plate of cookies or candy for a basket of fries any day. But then again, my potato friends are how I ended up out of shape in the first place. Oh how I miss fries. Le sigh.

In this short time, I’ve found that my clothes fit just a little bit better. I’ve also found that my skin is clearer and any random moments of indigestion are gone. Aren’t you glad you know that about me? I know, you’re welcome. The other improvement is something that (in the past) made me a bit of an anomaly amongst my friends. I’m that girl that will immediately look pregnant upon eating a full meal. Perhaps I have very weak stomach muscles, perhaps my eyes are consistently bigger than my stomach or perhaps I’m due to give birth to a food baby any day now. The good news is, I rarely have food baby moments these days… it’s a whole new world, really.

Moving on… the working out portion. Am I about to lose some of you? Yeah, it’s fine. I totally get that. So in the past I’ve done P90X – I did about 60 days and I will say that it was a great experience but it’s super hardcore. This time around, I’m letting Frogger take on Tony and the P90X crew while I tackle a new routine. I’ve also gone the gym trainer route and although that’s a great option, it’s just not in the budget. So, the options are as follows:

  • One hundred push ups – I love the idea of crafting toned arms and upper body for the big day but wow, 100 push ups in six weeks? I’d love to know someone who’s been able to do it! Go Hot Wings, Go!
  • From couch to 5k – Now this is intriguing. For one, it speaks to the fact that even now, as I type, I’m sitting next to Frogger enjoying our couch time. I’ve never been much of a runner but the idea of being able to run a 5k in just two months… holy impressive.
  • 30 day shred – The internets are all abuzz with Jillian Michaels and her latest vid. Apparently, if you follow it, it can be a butt kicking workout – and one that promises to tone you up in just 20 minutes a day!

I debated which to try out – and ultimately decided that 30 Day Shred was the most appealing to me. Initially I tried to do a full 30 days in a row but honestly, it was really hard to make it happen every.single.day. Life just got in the way. I’d say my average is 5 days/week and I feel pretty good about that. I have yet to move up to level 3 (there are 3 levels and when you feel you’ve mastered one, you move up to the next and so on) but I can say - it is a TOTAL workout. The whole idea of a 20 minute workout sounded way too good to be true but holy hell, she really kicks your ass.

What about you? Have any of you participated in any of these workouts?

PS – I’m boycotting Wii Fit - although that’s an option for some - I refuse to believe I am the “fit age” that it keeps telling me I am.

I also tried the P90X workout and ended up with tendonitis in my shoulder…I think it’s meant for someone a little more buff than I :) I think the 30 day shred sounds like it’s more up my alley…I’m also going back to ballet class and taking Zumba…Ballet barre is an amazing workout! Best of luck with your fitness plans!

Ugh, I have been trying now for weeks to improve my diet by commiting to having at least one fruit or vegetable with every meal but I have been sucking at it lately…And now the wedding’s only a month away, I feel like it’s too late! Oh well… Ima go shove some ice cream in my face to feel better, haha!

I’ve done the couch to 5k in the past. IT is a really great way to get moving if everything seems a little daunting. I had never run before and was afraid to try. Couch to 5k (and the related podcasts, Podcasts for Runners) made it an easy option and not scary at all. Whenever I was afraid to try a new level, I went for it and found that it wasn’t as hard as I’d imagined.

Good luck! I think I’ll give your eating habit change a try. But jeez how I love carbs!!!

A few bees on the boards are trying out combinations of those, like C25k and 100 pushups, or C25k and 30 day shred. C25k doesn’t take up a lot of time at all, in my opinion, since it’s barely 30 minutes a session and only 3 times a week. P90x sounds scary!

I can’t quite make it through a 30 Day Shred workout, but Couch to 5K is awesome. I can’t do it in 30 minutes, but I definitely can run the entire 3.1 miles now.

I also purchased the new Jenny McCarthy workout for Wii. It’s the same as Yourself Fitness which I had for the PS2 but it’s a little better this time around. It has a camera so half the screen is a video of you doing the workout so you and the game can watch your form. It also tracks calories. Combined with Wii Fit which tracks my weight, I might be able to make some real progress in the next 27 days.

I’m so lame, I was so proud of myself for doing 6 days in a row of 30 Day Shred but then work got so busy and I had to take a week off. Now I’m back on and I just know that I’m not as dedicated as I thought I was.

Couch to 5K sounds interesting and kind of crazy if it really works. I LONG to be a runner. I’m just…not.

Good luck with everything!! 30 Day Shred really does kick your butt!

I think the shred is great! I haven’t been doing it lately (combination of getting bored with it and having a downstairs neighbor who hates me - jumping all over my apartment probably doesn’t make him hate me any less) but I want to pick it back up soon!

I just moved to level three in 30 day shred. Even though it totally kicks my a$$, it is my favorite level. Each task is hard but engaging and um…fun?? anyway, I haven’t lost weight or inches but i am definitely noticing more definition. Even my man has commented on my “abs” SUCCESS!

C25K for me! I’m starting week 4 tonight and I am amazed at the endurance I have already gained.

@JessersLA: I am not a runner at all but the program is really working for me. After 3 weeks I went from not running at all to running multiple 3 minute intervals without a problem!

Oh yeah, I also do the Wii Active 30 Day Challenge on days I don’t run. It is a MUCH better workout than the Wii Fit and it tracks the calories you burn.

I have 30 day shred and I love it! I’m definitely going to start using it again aboue 60 days before the wedding. I am about to start 100 pushups with my friend who’s getting married in October. I have patella disformation though so I can’t run or do anything that’s high impact which sucks since that’s where the major calorie burn is!

Yay 30 day shred, but doing it everyday wasn’t going to happen for me either. My best was 5 days a week. And I still noticed a difference.

I did the 30 day shred (not every day, but 5x a week), and felt like it disappointed me! I’m a HUGE fan of EA Active on the Wii though! I did that for a month prior to switching to 30 day shred and felt like I got more muscle definition and weight loss that way.

That all sounds amazing! I joined Weight Watchers and am trying to find a workout regime to supplement it. The treadmill and elliptical at the gym just isnt cutting it for me anymore. The C25k sounds really interesting…always wanted to build up my endurance for running!

Also, if anyone is interested, I joined LiveStrong.com - they have great tools for Diet and Fitness. The site incorporates Google Maps for plotting out running/walking/biking route and helps you figure out how many calories you burn with any acitivity.

I love 30 day shred! You can definitely feel a difference, even if you’re not doing it every day. My legs literally feel like jello after doing level 2, and I run about 3 miles 2-3 x a week! Jillian knows her stuff.

I have been doing the C25K for 6 weeks now, and it is really amazing. I used to dread the running segments but now I zip through them no problem. I heard there is a C210K too???

I only last a few pounds before my wedding, but recently discovered Tracy Anderson Method and have now lost 10lbs in 1.5 months. I wish I had known about it before my wedding. The results were so quick too. Your diet is spot on though. TA also recommends eating no oils, spices, sauces, etc. too. It’s tough but so worth the results. If I can get down to my pre-college weight, I am making my husband marry me again! :)

I am on week 3 of the C25K, although it’s a modified one. I did the original as planned and tore a ligament in my leg. So now I’m doing this one: http://running.about.com/od/getstartedwithrunning/ht/getstarted.htm

I just started doing 100 pushups today. I could only do 4(!) pushups on my knees for the test at the beginning, so I can’t really see doing 100, but I will go through with it and see what it does.
