Choosing the Date : wedding nyc religious 2010 Calendar 2010-calendar

One of the first things that we had to talk about when after we got engaged was when. Many years ago, and kind of in passing, Mr. Hermit Crab had mentioned that he didn’t want to get married until after medical school. And this was before he even started! We got engaged during his third year of medical school, and after graduation still seemed to be a reasonable time. Graduation was set for mid-May 2010, and residency begins at the end of the June, so we decided to choose something late May or early June, so we would have time to move and take a vacation. The last weekend in May was going to be Memorial Day weekend, so we decided on a Sunday in early June and luckily for us, our venue was available.

Why Sunday?

Because we are Conservative Jews, we could not get married on a Friday night or Saturday before sundown in accordance with Shabbat observance. Sundown in June is, well, really really late, and though I like a good night out every once in a while, I wanted to at least stay awake for my whole wedding. So Sunday it was. Then we thought about time of day. Since the next day is not a holiday, we decided to make an early start - 11:30 AM. That way people could get home and rest before work on Monday. Also, as I mentioned earlier, our guests have access to the Gardens, so they can explore in the morning or after 4:30 PM.

I am actually very excited about a Sunday daytime wedding! We have a whole weekend to enjoy with our families, starting with Friday night family dinner, and a Saturday night out of town extravaganza, as well as plenty of time to visit with out of town family and friends.

Is anyone else have a Sunday daytime wedding? How did you come to that conclusion?

I love the idea of a Sunday wedding as well as a day time wedding.

I lost the date and time debate. I wanted a Friday night with a coctails and dessert reception. start about 8PM. he would hear nothing of it. We are having a Saturday 4PM shin-dig.

Miss Hermit Crab, we had the EXACT same reasoning for picking our date (6/11/11). My Fiance graduates med-school next May and intern year doesn’t start ’till July 1, so we could also move and have a honeymoon. We also discussed this timing before we ever got engaged. Medical school has such a set progression to it, we’re all kinda slaves to it, aren’t we?

Congratulations to Mr. Hermit Crab (and to you), medical school is no easy feat for either of you. =)

my wedding is at 2pm on a sunday. our day decision was based on cost - all the venues were cheaper on sunday than on a friday or a saturday. then we decided earlier in the day so people would have time to get home since that monday isn’t a holiday.

We’re having a Sunday evening wedding. We chose Sunday only because we love the play on numbers (10.10.10). Monday is Columbus Day, so maybe a few folks will have the next day off…

We didn’t have much of a choice - we fell in love with a venue and took the one day they had open for all of April, May, June of next year - the Sunday of Memorial day weekend! It’s also the father of the groom’s birthday as well as a little over a week after our dating anniversary. :)

I love Sunday weddings! Date picking was our absolute least favorite, most disaster-ridden aspect of wedding planning. We had all the same issues: med school, the Jewish calendar, etc. But we also had to contend with the Chinese calendar, which was much, much trickier. Eek!

Yeah, my cousin did the same thing and it was a total blast, although hers went until 9:30 that night…Luckily, we’re Reform Jews and I had my heart set on a Saturday night wedding, so that worked out, thank goodness!

Funny, but my date picking was similar. I printed a calendar and highlighted all the weeks that I would be on my “icky week” crossed off holiday weekends, circled the end of my FIs college year and the start of the next. Everyone in my family got married in july., so I crossed off all those dates, and we were left with a scant few weekends. We got one of those, and it’s now less than 6 weeks away!

i’ve been to only one daytime wedding (i haven’t been to that many weddings though) and i have to say as a guest, i LOVED it!!

it was also on a Sunday and began at 11:00, the reception was at 12:00 and concluded at 5:00pm. the weather was perfect (everything was outdoors) and i still had the rest of the night for myself and relaxed before work on monday. one of the best and memorable weddings i’ve been too actually!

with your venue, your timing sounds perfect. the mister and i started talking dates. i have one in mind for next year that i really, really want. if we get it and the venue i’ve been eyeing, then we’ll have a late afternoon since it’ll be an outdoor reception in a really insanely warm part of the bay area. no one wants to sweat in their nice clothes. especially me in a wedding dress!

your venue is beautiful. I love the botanical gardens, been there many many times and an ealry wedding is much easier. i had mine as a satruday 12 noon wedding and everything worked out so well.

My wedding is set for a sunday afternoon. For us it was more for the finances than anything else. We’ll be saving $10,000 right off the bat. I could have had a cheaper venue for a Saturday night wedding, but I had my heart set on this particular place. I think the sunday afternoon will provide beatiful pictures for both of us!!

That is really interesting! I had no idea there were reasons other than venue availability or budget savings to get married on a Sunday! And it sounds like a mid-day wedding will be perfect at your venue!

Our date and time was set by our church. We wanted a particular priest to marry us on a Saturday in October, and he could only do it on the 30th. The latest our church would let us have the ceremony was 1:00 PM, so 1:00 PM it was! I never wanted to have a break in between the nuptual Mass and our reception, but that’s what we’ll have to do since we wanted a dinner/dance reception. we’re providing a hospitality room for everyone to gather and chat in between the events, so hopefully that will alleviate some of the down time for our guests!

I’m sure it will be beautiful and make the perfect backdrop for pictures. We opted for a Saturday night, but definitely considered a Sunday daytime wedding as well.
