Letting Go

May 12th, 2010 @ 5:42 pm by Mrs. Lace

With only 45 days till the wedding, we have a lot going on:

  1. Mr. Lace started a new job.
  2. I’m wrapping up the school year which means prepping for Open House, report cards and packing up my classroom.
  3. I’m still waiting to hear about my pink slip and trying to figure out how we’re going pay the bills and for the house if I do end up getting laid off.

We’re in pretty good shape, but we still have a lot of things to take care of and it’s getting to the point where I have to just let go. I’m generally a pretty controlling person and when it comes to these DIY projects, I KNEW I could do them if I just had enough time. However, regardless of my DIY abilities, time is NOT on my side. I had a few more projects lined up that I would’ve loved to do. However, I had to drop a couple of DIYs that I realized that I wouldn’t have enough time or energy to complete…

… like these DIY straw flags… let go.

So, I’m officially letting go. I still have three projects to complete and THAT’S IT. I told my friend this earlier this evening and her response aws, “yeah right!” I’ll try my best to stick to my guns and not stress myself out.

Another thing I’m letting go of? The slideshow… but in a different way. As I was thinking about the slideshow, I realized that I didn’t really know how to put one together and neither did Mr. Lace. We knew we could figure it out, but it would take a lot of playing around. Then, it came to me! It’s time to let go! I approached my brother and asked if he’d be willing to do the slideshow for us if we gave him our pictures and music. Thankfully, he agreed. This past weekend, we gave him all of our photos and music on a flash drive and I let go (in more ways than one!). I felt so relieved that that was done—for us, at least.

Are there any projects or ideas you had to let go of? Was it difficult or easy?

I’m sure some of the bees on here or your family members could help you with those projects you let go.

I have to say- I got laid off in February, and though it is hard, it’s not the end of the world. We’ve made it work, and you will too!!

I have had a lot more time for wedding stuff, but with the lack of second income, I’ve had to.

Good luck!!

Miss Lace -
I live in San Jose and would be happy to provide you with a couple extra hands for any projects you just “need” (or want!!) to have.

This post felt so relieving to read! I so need to get myself to the point you’re at right now! Your wedding will be fabulous with or without the cutesy straws! :)

Totally hear ya on letting go, and I think it’s a great decision. We let go of our programs and asked our friend to make them for us — our trust in her allowed us to relax, and she did a wonderful job. I also let go of making bathroom baskets b/c in the end, they weren’t necessary.

I’ve been married now for a little over a week, and I can tell you (and other brides-to-be) with complete honesty that while my guests may have appreciated all of the little details I planned, they were truly there to see me and my husband on one of the happiest days of our lives. One of the most frequent comments was “You look so beautiful and happy! We’re so glad to celebrate with you!” Not comments about the flowers or the details.

Just my advice as a newly married woman :) I’m sure whatever you do will be beautiful, with or without extra DIY projects.

I let go of things too, and initially I was sad, but I honestly didn’t notice they were missing day of. It’s worth it for your sanity!

It’s so hard to let go. Right now I am grasping at straws to try to hold onto my DIY projects. I haven’t had time to do ANY, other than the invites/stds, and so I feel like such a terrible bride. I need to figure out how to be okay with letting go. :(

I was going to make those same tea light holders! I was going to hang them from tree branches assembled to look like trees that you would walk thru when you entered the room… all of that was scratched. I’m still bummed because the entry to the hall is incredibly bland & I needed something to detract from the awful wall paper there… I guess I’ll just have them dim the lights a little more :)

Thank you for this! I’m going through the same thing and there are simply not enough hours in the day for this sea creature!

@amariem25: I’m sorry you were laid off. That’s a bummer. A few of my colleagues got word yesterday that they were going to be laid off. I received a nerve racking call to go to the district office today. I waited there for 10 minutes in the waiting room and they called me in to rescind my notice. So I feel totally relieved and thankful. I just made it by the hair of my chinny chin chin though b/c I’m 4th from the bottom now.

@amariem25: Yes, Ive been considering that! I should probably get my act together and see if they’d be willing to do that.

@JoyfulBee: Oh you are such a sweetie! I’ll have to see if I can get my act together. I’m prepping for Open House right now. Can you do some of my student’s projects for them so they’re ready for Open House? :)

@Miss Turtle: @bluestuff: @jordynrose: @Mrs. Frozen Yogurt: Thanks for the advice gals. I totally know it’s true and the more married women tell me this, the better I feel and realize that I won’t regret it.

@Miss Scissors: I think maybe TIME will MAKE you let go when you’re running out. What helped me was making a prioritized list of all I needed to do. I drew a line underneath everything that HAD to be done so that the wedding could run smoothly. Everything else will depend on if I have time AND it’s prioritized so your most beloved project will have the best chance of getting done.

@Ella1978: I’m sure that no one will notice. I went to a wedding where they had vacation bible school decorations up all over the church - huge paintbrushes, paint splotches and tube of paint. Everyone got over it. As long as your wallpaper doesn’t have.. naked people on them, I doubt people will give it a second thought (or a first)…they’ll be too focused on the beautiful bride! :)

I’m so jealous you are almost done school!! I have to go until 6/22!! I’m sorry to hear about a possible pink slip. I live in NJ and our govenor is making teachers look like the worse people ever and schools are cutting people left and right. Some who have been teaching 5+ years I’m sure you’ve heard that it will work out…but in someway it will. Best of luck to you.

I’m glad your notice was rescinded…I’m also a public school teacher. I tried to make personalized candy wrappers for the miniature candy bars and had to let that go after many failed attempts. Oh well!

I’m starting to see more and more posts about how many things had to be let go, shown the door, scaled back, etc. (Maybe it’s one of those, I’m in the situation, so seeing it everywhere things). I’m totally with you sister. SO many of my projects have been shown the door, or downsized. Oh well, such is life- we move on, and life will still eb good. ;-) Best wishes!

Miss Lace, you crack me up.. NO, no naked people on the wall paper - just ugly, circa 1995 wall paper.

I did accomplish making these letter luminaires, it made my DIY heart twitter a bit! I’ll have to photograph them when I get the led lights to put inside of them!
