Mrs. Starfish's Picture
Mrs. Starfish, Boston/Newport Age and Occupation: 25, Operations Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Sales Engagement Date: October 8, 2008 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: The Atlantic Beach Club About Me: I'm a perfectionist who is a planner at heart. I don't do well with surprises. I love planning, crafting, Newport RI, family and friends, and most importantly, Mr. Starfish---all of which will be big components in our October wedding in our favorite little city by the sea.
About Mrs. Starfish

The biggest disappointment during our wedding planning is something I’m still trying to get over. If you’ve been following along, you may remember Mr. S and I met in college. I knew early on he was the one and envisioned getting married at our school’s chapel, Ochre Court. Ochre Court is the most significant mansion on the school’s campus and hosts not only the chapel, but also many of the school’s events. It’s where Mr S and I had our first dance and many other amazing memories during our four years of school. I knew it would be the place we said I do. At least I thought I did.

Prior to proposing, Mr. S looked into the requirements of getting married at the chapel. On top of being too pricey for us, they also maxed out at 150 guests. At that time we assumed our wedding would be attended by 300 guests—we’ve now gotten it down to a little under 200. But we knew a 150 maximum capacity was not doable. We tried to come up with different options, like having a smaller ceremony, but we didn’t like excluding anyone. I was really disappointed and I’m still not over it. I keep wishing some way we could get everyone to fit, but even if we could, they only have ceremonies when school is not in session, so that limits it to pretty much summer and winter break, and smaller breaks in between. So at this point, everything is booked and on a date that is during the school session, so it’s a definite no.

Since we can’t get married there, we decided to do our formal photos on campus. I was hoping to do them on the lawn behind Ochre Court. Then I saw a wedding with a photo session at Ochre Court on the Faith Dugan Photography blog. I knew we could take photos on the lawn, but I didn’t know it was an option to take photos inside Ochre, as well.

I was so excited to see Faith’s post. I’ve been so disappointed about not having our wedding there, but now I know we can at least take our photos on campus. It isn’t quite the same, but when I thought about it, this may actually be better. If we had the ceremony there it would be a bit more awkward to have our photos taken there after the ceremony, since all of our guests would be around. I’m a bit camera shy and having a huge audience would not help. Now we can leave the church and head over and get amazing shots like this couple did.

Here are photos of the couple inside Ochre Court. I think they are absolutely stunning!

This is where our college hosts the “snoball” semi-formal dance, which is where Mr. S and I had our first dance. The stairs actually lead to the admissions and alumni offices.

We also went to the Halloween dance and senior cocktail here. We’ve made so many great memories within these walls.

Outside of Ochre Court is a gorgeous lawn right on the Cliffwalk overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. I love the amazing photos Faith captures of this couple. I can’t wait to see what our photographer will do!

I’m in love with the wedding party shots. This is such a great location for both shots of us as a couple and larger group shots.

These photos make me so happy. When I’m feeling down about not getting married at Ochre, I know I can turn to these photos to cheer me up.

Did you have any major disappointments during planning? Did you find a silver lining?

I had such a similar thing happen with my venue! I wanted nothing more with my wedding than to get married at this beautiful church I attended every Sunday while in college, but the price to rent the it was more than half our budget so it wasn’t going to happen! I’m still crushed about it and I doubt I’ll really get over it, but we are getting married at another beautiful chapel and I know it’ll be beautiful. It’s just not what I imagined :( It sucks when things don’t go your way!!!

I got married there in 2007! It is gorgeous, but we had a small wedding, 118 total. I am a Salve 2002 Alum, and couldn’t imagine my wedding anywhere else. We then had our reception at the Rosecliff Mansion. The good thing is that you can do formals there, which will be GORGEOUS! Keep your head up :)

Originally we had 220 on our guest list and I refused to have a large wedding because I had to have my ceremony Ochre Court, so we cut. To me, it was more important than having everyone at our wedding, but sometimes you just have to decide what is best, and it seems like having everyone there you love is the best for you.

Newport and your college are stunning spots for your photos. I am slightly jealous! I went on vacation last fall and fell in love with the area, especially the Cliff Walk.

I’m not even engaged yet and I’ve had a disappointment very similar to yours. On the UF campus there is a beautiful chapel called the Baughman Center, and ever since I realized you could do weddings there I’d dreamed that that’s where mine would be. Unfortunately the Center only seats about 100, and though I’m obviously nowhere near a point of making a guest list my boyfriend has a very large family, and I have a pretty big family as well, so there is no way we could have only 100 people and include everyone we would want to. Maybe it’s better that I know this now, so my hopes never got too high, but every time I see pictures of a wedding there, I always feel a little bummed that I won’t have the same experience.

Hi! I saw your post because of the link back to my blog. (Thanks!!)

Yes, you can take photos inside Orche Court! You actually need to rent the location to be on the grounds, inside or out. It’s $250/hour. (This is about the standard rate to rent any property in and around Newport. But many places will not allow inside photographs, which makes SRU’s OC a great option!) Karla took my advice and rented OC as a rain back up plan. Thank goodness because Hurricane Danny was Karla’s unexpected guest!

I’m glad you love the photos. Thanks for the post!

At least you’ll get your pics there. It’s a beatiful venue- maybe you could do vow renewals for a significant anniversary?

@Salvebride: I have to say I’m super jealous! :)
@sunnydebs: Thanks the Cliffwalk is one of my favorite spots!
@GatorKate: @june42011: I know its so hard when you have a specific place you want, but can’t have
@Faith Dugan, photographer: Thanks for that information. I didn’t know we’d have to rent, I’ll have to call them and get this set up, I really appreciate this!
@sulaii211: If we hit the lotto, it may be an option. I just cant bring myself to spend that kind of money!

We also met in college and knew we wanted our university chaplain to marry us. My fiance had been on multiple trips to central American with him and he knew us both well, and I had been an intern in his wife’s office, so we never imagined he would say, “No,” but he did. He was working on becoming the “Rev. Dr.” and was understandably busy, even though we asked him two years before the wedding.

Silver lining: Our uncle is a former mister and offered to perform the ceremony, giving it the personal feel we really wanted!

I’m sorry that you couldn’t marry in your chapel, but getting your pictures there will be an AWESOME compromise! =) It’s wonderful that it has such personal meaning for you! It doesn’t hurt that it’s STUNNINGLY beautiful! Good luck!

it’s beautiful, and i’m so glad you’re going to have photos at this meaningful building even if the ceremony can’t take place there.

I’m so glad that you’ll still be able to take your photos at Ochre. It’s not your dream, but a great compromise!

What a beautiful backdrop for your pictures!! I am with you on the camera thing. I would feel uber awkward if my guests were watching me get my pictures taken, so that will be great that you will have a chance to get away.

Yes, you MUST rent the property even if you want to go outside. They don’t allow multiple brides on property at the same time. The second security sees a wedding party roll up, they check on the reservation. Otherwise they will very politely ask you to leave. No good! I wish I had the rental info handy, but I don’t. I’m sure it won’t be hard to find!

@Faith Dugan, photographer: Thanks again, I had no idea it was needed for outside, I’ll call the alumni office. Thanks for all of the help!
