Let Them Eat… Pie

May 13th, 2010 @ 4:15 pm by Mrs. Frog

So I’ve begun the DIY wedding journey. One of my slated projects is below - these cuter than cute little flags.

Let Them Eat... Pie : wedding cake food phoenix Mini Pi

As you can see, the example I found has them being used in cupcakes, however, I’m not big into cake and neither is Frogger.

Back when we went on a long weekend trip to Chelan, we stopped at an adorable little bakery in a tiny town nearby. We wanted to get some pie samples to see if we could find a fit for our wedding. Upon walking into the homey, delicious smelling store, I was blown away by the amount of choices that were available. They had pies of every flavor you can imagine and even better…

they had mini pies.

Behold the mini pie goodness

And not to be overlooked, they also had full sized pies:

Yummy

Personally, one of the things I loved most was the fact that not only do they taste delicious and are made-from-scratch, they actually look homemade.

We decided to take 6 of the mini pies with us (much to the delight of our friends who we were staying with that weekend) and did a little tasting. Even after sitting in the garage refrigerator for several hours… they were still damn tasty!

Roll call: Apple, Peach, Triple Berry, Pumpkin, Blueberry and Strawberry Rhubarb

As a group, we decided our favorite was the blueberry… followed closely by strawberry rhubarb, triple berry and apple. We may throw a few more in for good measure when we place the order but those will definitely be the majority.

I must say, the thing I love most is that they use different symbols to identify the pies once they are cooked – each one is different: a star, heart, two lines, three lines, circle, etc. Too cute.

We are envisioning a pie table with a few of the full size pies surrounded by mini pies that will be served to each guest. By having some bigger pies, we will still be able to do a traditional “cutting and serving” as bride and groom but we get to do it with a dessert that we both love.

Now that you’ve seen the pie set-up, can you just imagine those cute little flags sticking up out of the pies? I can’t wait!

Staying with our garden-chic vibe and continuing to incorporate local flavors, we also decided on our favors! As soon as I saw this on… where else – Martha Stewart Weddings – I knew it was perfect for our wedding. I’ll need to tweak a bit to fit our colors but you get the idea:

Let Them Eat... Pie : wedding cake food phoenix Cherrie

(source) Washington cherries anyone?

I’m thinking since our colors are gray, purple and blue – perhaps I should find a gray box to hold them? I was also thinking it could be charming to use a rustic cherry box or a wooden wine box – thoughts?

If I went the more rustic route, I could dress it up by using a ribbon in our colors or line the bottom with colored fabric. I’m still pretty torn on the presentation of these. What do you think?

how about one of those long rectangular planter boxes that they use for smaller things like herbs? that way it will be shallow enough that people can grab the cherries easily. i’m not sure if planter box is the right word, i’m just guessing here. anyway, i love love love the pie and favor ideas that you’ve come up with!

I vote rustic cherry boxes. You could buy fabric in your colors and line the boxes with the fabric, so little bits of your colors are peaking through!

PIE!!! YAY!!!! My fiance and I are doing pie also! I’m so excited and thoroughly enjoyed mini-pie tasting :)

We are getting all full-size pies — most will be in disposable tins, but we bought a really pretty Polish pottery pie dish for “our” pie. So it’ll look a little fancier than the others for our pics/cutting.

For our display, our reception coordinator is going to set up small boxes of various sizes on a table and then drape a large tablecloth over it — it’ll give our pie display some depth and texture without having to buy a bunch of cake stands.

We’re also contemplating having cans of Reddi-Wip set out on the tables so that people can top their pie. :)

So excited! The hard part is going to be deciding which type of pie we want to cut into… they were all so delicious!

I vote wooden wine boxes. I use these in my kitchen and have found some with very cool imprints burned into the side with logos from wineries in California or France.

I plan to arrange cones of sweet potato fries in these. But those bags of cherries are SUPER cute!

We’re wedding pie-bar buddies! We’re doing both mini and full size. I’ve been collecting old wood fruit crates that I’m going to put the pies on. We’re getting ours from Ikeda’s in Auburn CA - we picked up an apple and cherry for mother’s day - yum yum!

The pies look lovely! I´m sure they´re realy tasty.
I was thinking, are you using cherries for the flavors?
Cuz you can always use berries, like blackberries and blueberries that fit your colors. Just an idea tho.

Yum! And I think if you could find an old shutter or window or something and place them on it, that would look awesome!

We’re planning to do pies at our wedding in Seattle. Not sure where we’re going to get the pies. Maybe a trip to Chelan is in order. They look delish!

Those pies look scrumptious! I love it!!! Not everyone is wild about cake anyway…we’re only having a cake that feeds about 2/3 of the guests…everyone likes variety!
