About Mrs. Taco

3 Years Down, a Lifetime to Go

May 14th, 2010 @ 11:32 am by Mrs. Taco

It’s was our three-year dating anniversary yesterday, as well as the one-year anniversary of our engagement. Bumbling engagement LOLs here.

On May 13, 2009, we picked at our anniversary/celebration dinner, since excitement trumped our appetites. My disastrous, habitually chipping “manicure” in the ring-photo text was the target of joke after joke. We took time to lament the sad state of Love Plant, a potted rose plant Mr. Taco gave me on our 2008 anniversary. (It’s still alive in the purgatorial sense of “not dead”, by the way.)

A year ago, a friend suggested I wait a month before starting any planning, allowing for time to bask in my one-time engagement newness. I completely ignored this helpful advice, but, for better or worse, we I got a lot done in those first few months. We were then left with seasons-long stretches of twiddling our thumbs and putting off the small stuff. And then the small stuff became more imminent, as did August 14, 2010. At some point, people transitioned from saying, “oh, you’ve got a while” to, “hey, it’s coming up!”

Wedding comprises an entire economy, complex, and culture you can’t glean from WE TV (not that I didn’t try). It can be an emotional roller coaster if you let it, which is very easy to do. But with only a few months left to go, sanity, finances, and relationships are all seemingly intact. Above all else, I’m grateful for that. Life went on, just as it was supposed to.

(I guess we haven’t paid our remaining bills yet, so maybe I’ve spoken too soon.)

Whether your engagement was/is long or short, what (be it good, bad, or annoying) stands out most from that transitory time?

My/our “transitory time”, with perhaps the exception of two weeks, has been filled with wedding - whether it’s been looking for a vendor, family discussions (ugh), or diy projects. I’m wrapping things up now in hopes of having some peace time. If I had to do over again, I’d definitely avoid any wedding talk with folks and enjoy a good portion of just us “engagement time” before overloading on planning and paying…

I completely know how you feel. Our 5 year dating anniversary is tomorrow and I feel like it was just yesterday that I was looking at the calendar and I had over 400 days left to our wedding and now we have 87 days to go.

How funny! Your three year dating anniversary is one month before mine and we are both getting married the same day!

I’m in the same boat - and like you August 14th has come to be 3 months away today with a lot of little things still left.

I’m just glad I had the wedding to plan b/c his deployments would have been 10x harder to deal with

Off topic, do you find it funny that the day before the wedding is Friday the 13th?

I’m a fellow 14th of August bride and we’ve had a 4 1/2 engagement, it’s all been a bit of a whirlwind to be honest, but a really, really fun one!

we paid our first grocery bill together yesterday, no “I’ll get it this time, you get it the next” stuff, it was such a “we” thing instead of a “me” and “you” thing. I think it’s the million little unifying moments like this, that are sticking out to me the most about our engagement. This slow and wonderful transition to melding our lives together so that when the wedding day hits, it will feel like we finally have put a title and an officialness to the unit that we have become.

Congrats on the milestones! We are at the point where it is switching from “plenty of time” to “right around the corner.” Yikes!

@Carebear0613: Ah, we’re in great company, then! Congrats to you, too.

@sarahbean: Date twins! It’ll be a great one for a wedding, I hope :)
