Ms Seahorse's Picture
Ms Seahorse, Boston Age and Occupation: 25, Veterinary Jane-of-all-trades Fiancee's Age and Occupation: 36, former non-profit fundraiser in search of something better Engagement Date: October 17, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Fort Pond Lodge About Me: By day I'm a cat-wrangler, vet tech assistant, pet-sitter, receptionist, and pre-vet student, but the rest of the time, I'm a former-roller-derby girl turned dedicated-wedding planner. I love reading, writing, bicycles, animals, roller skating, and antique-y things of all sorts. I'm a vegetarian who likes spicy foods, while Fiancee Seahorse is a meat eater who does not like spices. We live outside Boston with our menagerie: a fifty pound dog, a one-eyed, seventeen-toed, toothless cat, and a perfectly put together cat who has a penchant for pooping near rather than in her litter box. In addition to planning our small lake-side wedding, we enjoy running around with the puppy, playing board games (Scrabble, anyone?), having little adventures, talking about how we should really clean the house more, and maintaining our little garden of vegetables and wedding flowers.

The Six-Month Disease

May 17th, 2010 @ 10:50 am by Ms Seahorse

I admit that, in my family, I am known to be a hypochondriac. I’m not sure that my ailments are as imagined as my family members seem to believe they are, but fine—most of the time that I think I am dying, I am not, in fact, dying. That said, I have been suspecting for awhile that I have what is referred to as “The Six Month Disease”, and evidence continues to point to its existence, this illness raging in my body.

Symptoms of the Six Month Disease flare up every, say, 6 months – hence the name. Very complex, as you can see. Some such symptoms include:

  • Wanting big life changes
  • Creating big life changes
  • Whining about what changes one could make in one’s big life
  • Begging for cute things

It should be noted that much of this occurs within the context of one’s intimate relationship. I may have been infected long before my current relationship existed, but it is only in the past couple of years that it has been pointed out to me that I have this disease.

Let’s review:

November 2007: I joined roller derby.

Six months later brings us to April 2008: I fall hard for a lovely lady, one Ms. Fancee Fancee-free.

Aaaand six months minus just one day takes us to one Sterling Animal Shelter, where I ogle lots of puppies and fall in love with “Luna”. We celebrate our six month-iversary, and I pick “Luna” up from the shelter the next day.

Yes, that is a smiley-face made out of dog kibble, and we are making her practice “wait”. Look at her cute forehead wrinkles!

About six months after that, I convince Fancee that we need a kitten. I guess the true-r version of the story is that I go to therapy, talk about how miserable my job at a rape crisis center is making me (yeah, I don’t work there anymore), and tell her that the only thing that makes me feel happy is thinking about kittens. She tells me to go ahead and get a kitten! Why not? They’re wonderful like chocolate bars, except you don’t eat them so they last forever! Or some such gem. I tell Fancee that I have been prescribed a kitten. We adopt the Finnster.

(You may have noticed that he was not in my earlier posts. Sadly, he no longer lives with us. He tortured poor Piper to the point that she never came out of hiding, and then some friends petsat for us for a weekend and they fell in love with him. It seemed like the perfect situation, so he lives with them now and we visit. He is the most spoiled, giant, wonderful cat ever.)

Aaaaand six months after that little fluff ball enters our lives, we decide, all officially and stuff, to get married. That was last October.

Recently, Fancee asked me how long it’d been since we got engaged. The answer ended up being something like five months and 10 days. “Nearly six months,” she pointed out.

And OMG I want a puppy.

So really: we’re getting this new apartment, and we’re going to have twice as much space as we do now. Literally. And we’re going to have a fenced in yard. AND we will be living right next to a dog park! AAAAND this week we petsat for a young dog and she and Daphne had so much fun together!

All of this points to I will probably die if I don’t get a puppy.

Right? I mean, I guess other options are just wait it out… maybe something else big and exciting will happen at this 6-month mark. And I know we don’t want a puppy before we get married. And I know our new landlord will probably freak out if I say, “We have a dog, two cats, and can we get a puppy in ten minutes?” And Fancee said we can get a puppy in five years, which is down from the previous 8, which was down from the 10 she was saying before that.

Searching Petfinder is a dangerous thing to do.

Does anyone else get restless like this? I’m not sure it’s restlessness, maybe it’s a desire for a new adventure. Well, I’m starting a printmaking class next Monday so maybe this will postpone my puppy dreams. Some people get baby cravings… I get puppy cravings. I probably always will.

What do you guys do with this restlessness, if you have it? And if you don’t, what do you do to avoid such things and how can I get some?

I never knew there was a name for this! I think I have this disease too! We got a puppy last January, decided to get married in August, and by March I was DYYYYYING for another puppy (which we promptly got!). So maybe mine is the 7 month disease…

Wait, you mean it’s not just me? other people get this insane urge to fill their lives and homes up with furbabies? ;)

I adopt a cat. I adopt a second cat. I get a dog. I start agility with said dog. Determine two years later that she doesn’t really like it. I adopt a sheltie, who loves agility and loves first dog :). Friend says: you need a kitten! I have a cute one eyed kitten for adoption! I adopt third cat. I move out into own house; at which point first cat decides that he doesn’t really like the dogs and would rather stay with mom. Then I start thinking…I could have third dog. I could have another kitten. I could have hamster. I could……

I don’t have a fix for it (except for talking very sternly with myself on how UTTERLY CRAZY it would be to adopt any more animals, I should block Petfinder from my browser, Yes Missouri is too far to travel to adopt, No that Mini Aussie isn’t the most freaking adorable thing you’ve ever seen — bad Strawberry, bad!).

Because a hamster wouldn’t take up THAT much room. Right?

Haha, love the kittens are like chocolate analogy. we have 2 fur babies, Cosmo the ‘kitten’ is sitting on my lap right now trying to eat my necklace. And now that you mention it, we got Cosmo and Cleo about 7 months ago, and for the last month or so FI has been begging me to let him get a puppy or kitten. Maybe he is diseased..

I am dying to get a puppy for my dog to play with - she loves playing with other dogs! Maybe my fiance will let me get one after our current puppy (she’s not even a year old yet) is fully potty trained…

i have the disease! i try and mix up the cures to keep from adopting too many pets/changing jobs too many times/etc. Other things that have come int he form of the 6 month disease include tattoos, apartment changes, big purchases (eg. a car), etc. Lately beacuse i can’t afford big purchases and don’t have space for pets, i’ve been trying to take on big projects every 6 months or so, the most recent one i did was the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. it took a lot of energy and time and focus to fundraise and prep for the walk, and that did a decent job taking my mind of my current desire (need) for a puppy. i also felt very accomplished afterwards!

Oh man I totally do this too! We started dating in July, got engaged in December, got married in July, decided to build a house in January, we are moving into said house next weekend and now I want to redo the kitchen already. I think it is because I like to have a project. I’m sure I’ll want a kid by December.

You are not alone, Petfinder is dangerous city. I only let myself visit every once in while… volunteering at the shelter I work at is even worse! It’s like petfinder on crack because it isn’t just cute photos it’s “Oh hey human, aren’t I an adorable snuggly cat that will sit on your lab? Don’t you want to take me home??”

I’m also a failed foster. This brings us to four cats (we aren’t home enough for a dog and live in an apartment). I just tell people that in 6 years or so I’ll be a vet… like that makes it okay!

I’m right there with you.

Dec. 2008 Graduate with my BBA.
May 2009 start dating my SO.
Nov. 2009 buy a new car.

It’s now May 20010, and I’m crushing hard over a kitten. I’d been talking about getting one for the past couple of days. Yesterday while slacklining at the park, a lady was trying to rescue a kitten from the sewer. She’s allergic so I gave her my number. I should know later today if I’ll have a new addition.

“I have been prescribed a kitten.” HA HA HA HA! I Wonder if I subbed in the word “puppy” and told this to my fiance, if he would oblige? lol. My guess is no since we have a chihuahua, german shepherd/chow chow mix and a grate dane…. Oh well. I loved this post, it was absolute hilarious!

haha, love the prescribed a kitten. I’m in the hate my job camp so I foster puppies and dogs, doesn’t fix the job but makes me a happier person. Get the perks of having lots of love without actually adopting 10 animals.
