Ch-ch-ch-change is a-coming. Does anyone else feel the same way? I’ve always felt like change comes in waves. There are stable periods where you can sit back, have nothing planned, enjoy a glass of wine, and relax with the pleasant feeling of having nothing on the short term horizon.
Weddings almost feel like the complete opposite. To me, I feel like the pre-wedding period is like the rolling of the waves, and as you approach toward the wedding day, you start to approach the crest of the wave. Maybe the wedding itself is the pinnacle cresting of the wave. It makes a beautiful big crash and then things go back to the calm.
After a meltdown, it’s often easier to start to see through the haze and take a moment to realize what you’re going through. Many of you suggested stopping to smell the spring flowers, and I basically told you in a childish voice, “No, I don’t want to.” Well, I’ve had my moment, and I’m ready to be a grown up again. It took a while, but growth isn’t easy right? And even more importantly, flowers don’t grow if you only have sunny days. You need days of rain and some “body” to hold onto (Thanks Mr Hot Wings). So cry… uh… I mean rain it did, and now the growth and change is a coming.
As Mr. Hot Wings and I approach our life together, we’ll be moving from our Chicago home to a new home in the Boston area.
We grew from Mr and Miss to Dr and Dr. Now it’s time to not just change, but to actually purge the past.
First, we loaded up clothes, pots/pans, books, and other goods to donate to our local Salvation Army.

Look at all those bags! It was pretty scary to see how much stuff we were hoarding that could be used by other people. Sadly, our apartment didn’t look any less cluttered after donating all those goods. We had stuffed them all pretty far back in the closets.

Next, we donated Mr. Hot Wing’s beloved g-rider, a 1992 Oldsmobile Achieva. He lovingly referred to her as his “Over-Achieva”. Can you see how “lovely” she was? In Law Hot Wings joked that she wanted to die, and he just wouldn’t let her go. Well, she got us to the Salvation Army to do one last good deed. Then she sat and died in front of our apartment building. I guess he found another over-achiever to replace her with (ME!).

Check this stack of old school awesomeness we found in Mr. Hot Wings’ car. You better believe the Hot Cuts Mega-mix tape was hard to give up!
And what am I giving up that’s heart wrenching, you ask? This…

My Yoda poster. I searched for it for years. It hung over my bed in college. And it has hung over my work desk for the last 6 years. Mr. Hot Wings is a huge Star Wars fan, so he hasn’t said anything about me keeping it. But it’s time for Yoda to find a new home. I’m not sure we’ll have space for him anymore. It’s a sad day, isn’t it? But, I just had to prioritize.
Even though we purposely saved a couple old and sentimental items, we also realized that it was time for change. It was time to purge of some of our past to make room for our future. We also realized these old things didn’t make us. The memories we held of them could never be replaced by the objects themselves. So we mourned the lost of these old goods with a bottle of wine and a night of fun reminiscing. Now, we’re ready to move on.
What waves of change are you going through before the wedding? Are you happy, sad, and/or nervous about it?
