I'm planning a half-destination wedding on the beautiful island of Oahu - imagine a plethora of movies, art and games; savory Hawaiian food; blended Chinese and Japanese cultural details; lush, fragrant tropical flowers and all the air conditioning a NorCal native could want! And once I marry the love of my life, we'll come back to the 'mainland' to party it up all over again in my hometown of Salinas, the salad-bowl capital of the world!

Shutter Pleats!

May 18th, 2010 @ 5:35 pm by Mrs. Sewing

Oddly enough, both my mother and Mr. Sew’s mother are thinking along the same lines in terms of dresses. In fact, they both set eyes upon the exact same designer with the exact same style in mind. It’s almost like having my very own bridesmaids with matching dresses, only I’m not involved in decision making.

But don’t get me wrong - I love it. The style they both fell for is very flattering, and will be perfect for a summer wedding in Hawaii. I wouldn’t mind wearing the shutter pleat style either!

Adrianna Papell, champion of the Sewing mothers. I know there are plenty of other brands that sell shutter pleat dresses, but it was Adrianna that got them hooked on the style.

Mr. Sew’s Mom already bought her dress - from Nordstrom. They didn’t have the one she wanted in Honolulu, so we went off to an L.A. Nordstom while in town for Mr. Sew’s Brother’s graduation from USC. Not only did they have the style she wanted, but in blue too! According to Mr. Sew, his brother and his Dad, her favorite color is blue. Because she wears jeans a lot. *Sigh* Men.

Well, whether or not her favorite color is blue, she liked this option better than the black dress she had found in Honolulu.

She bought a cute little ivory shawl to wrap around her arms, and is now in the market for a pair of not-too-tall navy heels.

Sewing-Mom also bought a dress, from Macy’s. She bought it for $150, and then found the exact same dress at Ross for $50, prompting the old return-and-buy-again routine.

But then she decided it wasn’t blingy enough for the wedding. And it’s a little hard to see the pleats due to the busy fabric. She’ll keep it for some other part of the wedding trip, but is still on the look-out for “the one”. Any ideas of where I can find a knee-length, mother-of-the-bride-blingy dress with pretty pleats?

Have your parents and future in-laws coordinated their attire? Any other mothers out there with a passion for pleats?

My Mom wore a blue Adriana Papel very similar to that one! She wore a cream wrap and silver shoes, super cute, loved it!

I bought my mom’s dress for her as a gift. She didn’t even know what it would look like until it arrived! My MIL politely asked about the colors my mom would be wearing before purchasing her dress.

I love the shutter pleats–now I know what they’re called. Thanks for sharing!

Shutter pleats to the rescue! My mom had a lot of trouble finding something fun, elegant, modest but not too “mother-of-the-bride-sy.” She’ll be wearing a shutter pleated dress with rosette from Nordstroms like this one from Todashi: http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/3087286?Category=&Search=True&SearchType=predictivesearch&keyword=tadashi+shoji&origin=searchresults

I also like the idea of coordinated attire between the mothers–so long as they love it, too! Good luck finding “the one!”

My mom’s wearing a dress this style, in black, from Penney’s. I have to say, she can really work a shutter pleat! My FMIL is going to wear black slacks and a nice blouse, which is perfect for her personal style.

Ha! My now mother-in-law wore Adrianna Papell in that shiny blue fabric with a bolero jacket from Nordstrom’s, too! And she looked amazing. Looked great with silver shoes and diamond studs and solitaire necklace.

Oooh, I feel like this style is really popular right now. I’ve been to a bunch of weddings recently, and if it’s not the MOB or MOG wearing shutter pleats, I’ve noticed other ladies wearing the style. I bet you should be able to find something nice at Nordstrom’s or Macy’s!

My mom is also wearing a Adrianna Papell dress for my wedding. It has an ivory top and from the bust down it’s black. Incredibly flattering and she loves it! Better yet-we found it at TJMaxx for $25!!

I bought my mother the same dress in beige! She looks gorgeous in it! I got the dress from TJ MAXX for only $40! They had tons of colors too if you want to do another return and buy again! heehee.

Both our mothers are wearing beige dress while our BMs wear lavender (both our wedding colors).
