About Mrs. Scissors

Yeah, Right.

May 19th, 2010 @ 8:40 am by Mrs. Scissors

So remember how I was going to make my veil? Well, it’s a month before the wedding, so I’d have a snowball’s chance in hell to be able to gain the veil-making skills, time, or energy needed to make my own veil. So, buying it is.

The week before last, at dress fitting numero dos, I played with veils. Remember my original veil inspiration?

Yeah, Right. : wedding georgia veil Doodadw doodadw

{ Our Labor of Love, We Met in a Bar }

The long veils were wonderful, and a bunch of fun to play with, but I also fell for a pure silk, fingertip length, pointed-bottom, pencil-edged waterfall veil. Oh boy, was it ever beautiful. It hung so delicately––it was transparent, light, and dreamy. The veil-lady at the shop said that if I didn’t buy a pure silk veil, it would end up looking crunchy, not hang right, and basically kill my whole dress look. Wikiwhat? Dress killing? Equipped with this new paranoia, we asked for the price.

Yeah, Right. : wedding georgia veil Nofingw nofingw

That’s the price without a blusher and without tax. Oh yeah, and without shipping. Pardon my French, but f that shit. No. Way. Not gonna happen. I resisted the urge to drop my jaw to the floor, and calmly said that “We’d be in touch.” Touch my ass. Back to the drawing board.

I searched the internet, went all crazy trying to figure out what veil I wanted, and wasted a whole bunch of time. Based on my height, ordering a non-super-long veil is pretty tricky. A fingertip veil might cut me at the waist, and a waltz length veil might hit at my fingertips. Also, veil-lady’s crunchy comments circled in my mind. Too much obsessing, as per usual. Were her comments just made to sell a crazy-expensive veil? Was she right? Even if she were right, did it really matter? With a long veil, the weight pulled it into flowy mode. I decided to squash her used-car-salesman comments and continue about my bidness.

Thankfully, last night while floofling through the interwebs, I found a veil that swept me off of my feet.

Yeah, Right. : wedding georgia veil Veil1wb veil1wb

Yeah, Right. : wedding georgia veil Veil2wb veil2wb

{ Heknowsmyname on Etsy }

Lovely, full, dramatic, and a bunch of fun. Seventy-nine dollars. Sold. Veil decision? Made.

Oh yes, and the lovely seller is adjusting the proportions to fit my 6’3″ frame for no extra charge. So full of win.

Was anybody else quoted a ridiculous price at your bridal salon, or was I just extra lucky? How did you find and decide on your veil?

I got mine on etsy for $29. Best deal I hope I made - simple pencil edge finger tip ivory veil. I never thought about how it would affect taller girls - glad you found something that worked! I always thought veils were over priced!!

I agree, the prices for Veils are quite costly. A good budgeting tip would be to check out used ones. Unlike the dress, women are much more likely to part ways with their veil as it doesnt have AS much sentimental value as the dress and its easier to use someone elses. Women with best friends and sisters can make it their something used!!

me too!!!! I felt like I had to scrap my jaw off the floor after the bridal consultant told me that the veil that she had me try on with my dress, which she said would go “oh so perfectly” with it, was $720.00!!!!! Come on people! It’s tulle with some lace around the edge, I see no gold on this thing, I see no diamonds, so why the the redonkulous price?!

As much as I loved that veil, I am obviously on the search for a cheaper option, maybe etsy will come through for me as well.

I looooove that veil. I never tried on expensive veils so I’m glad I was spared from that experience!

the bridal shop i went to was in a small town but they had a great selection. their veils were not very expensive, i think i got myn for 70. I looked at other places and the same veil was anywhere from 170-250. nuts. just shows you how much those other places make by marking things up!

I made the big mistake of trying on veils at a bridal salon to try and get an idea. I ended up liking components of three different veils and the salon told me that it wouldn’t be a problem because every veil is make specific for each bride. The price tag was $1,200! I thought I was going to be sick. How can they charge so much for tulle! But my grandmother was with me and fell in love so needless to say I have the veil.

My veil was slightly over $100, but it does have this beautiful, delicate beading along the edges. It hits just below my waist. I’m excited to meet it!

The first dress I bought (um, yeah, gonna sell that one) was off-the-rack and deeply discounted. How’s that relevant? Yeah, it was less expensive than the veil I bought to go with it. That’s right. LESS expensive than the VEIL. WTF?!?

I may have been quoted a ridiculous price ($585) and I may have taken it. I had searched high and low for this particular veil, had gone out of my way on a brief trip to NYC just to see it in person. She probably could have quoted anything south of $800 (which is more than my dress cost) and I would have said yes. Oh you say “it’s just a veil!?” I can’t heaaaaaar you.

You make me laugh Miss Scissors! I found a veil I loved at the bridal shop, but it was $360! Yeah right, so I found a member on WB who sold me hers (never used-she changed her mind) for only $80!! WIN WIN…don’t you love that!

What’s the deal with veil prices? I feel like they think they’ve got you because you already bought your dress. In my situation I just didn’t feel like doing research anymore so I just bought it. It was reasonable compared to what that lady quoted you though. Lol.

I agree that what salons charge for veiling is silly. Remember that a standard retail markup is cost x 2.5 = retail price. Places like etsy and online retailers have less overhead and can afford a smaller markup. Beading and edging, too, are big factors in the cost of a veil.

I really like the veil you picked :-)I had the exact same problem! I ended up buying mine for 60$ on ebay. Then I got all paranoid about the material not being fancy silk but tulle. I was worried that it wouldn’t be as airy and flowy. Searching the internet about the veil material question I found this article on Martha Stewart Weddings: http://www.marthastewartweddings.com/article/veils
It says that tulle is the material that should be chosen for veils! If Martha says so… :-) And now I really like that it is a little stiffer and has a little more volume than the silk ones.

I read once that a bridal salon’s goal (well… not every salon… but you know what I mean…) is to get you to spend the same amount on accessories as you did on your dress. Say WHAT now???

My veil was found at a PoB sample sale. It was $25. Done and done.

I feel your pain, I’ve been making mine–got the tulle, a tool to apply the swarovski crystals, the swarovski crystals a hair comb all for under $50–it honestly didn’t take that long. The one I wanted from the shop was $750, and i actually like the one I made a whole lot better!
