Mrs. Lobster's Picture
Mrs. Lobster, Brooklyn Age and Occupation: 29, Finance Girl Fiance's Age and Occupation: 33, Finance Boy Engagement Date: July 25, 2009 Wedding Date: August 2010 Venue: Stage 6 Steiner Studios About Me: I'm a New York-born, Virginia-bred girl who's found her way back to the big city. Mr. Lobster and I met in grad school and have been together ever since. I'm clueless about DIY but am an avid online shopper and love all things polka dots, stripes, and ruffles! When I'm not making wedding lists, you can find me looking for snacks, watching Gilmore Girls, or hanging out with Mr. Lobster and our new puppy Buddy! We are planning a fancy-pantsy Brooklyn wedding for a hot New York summer night which is sure to be a misadventure in the making.
About Mrs. Lobster

Last time in the bridesmaid dress saga, I attempted to be the David Copperfield of brides and find the perfect dress. That was a major fail.

Then I found these jewel tone dresses on Nordstrom.com and enlisted a Lobstermaid to try them on:

Nordstrom Dresses

Jewel Tones - Didn’t make it to the 2nd date

Here are real life pics in the dresses.

They looked OK (the third was just not flattering and thus not included in pictures) but both dresses seemed kind of short to be bridesmaid dresses (that’s because they are juniors dresses, LOL) and I wasn’t in love with either of the colors. Overall both are cute for cocktails but not right for the Lobster wedding.

This was just a funny dress we saw on a shopping trip. My bridesmaids would abandon me if I chose this one:

Rosettes gone bad

Back to the Light Bulb

It seems like the jewel tones weren’t working out so I went back to the original light bulb moment courtesy of Mrs. Frenchie. Also from Nordstrom (and suggested by some readers), was this yellow angel. Pretty! The perfect shade of sunshine yellow for a summer wedding and also in lightweight chiffon like some of the J.Crew dresses I originally liked.

Donna Morgan Lemonade

The only MAJOR con is that it is backordered until mid-June, i.e. less than 2 months from the wedding. Just my luck - right when I find a dress I like I can’t even find it in person!!!

But luckily one of the Lobsie Twins found just *one* dress and tried it on too:

Yes, a blurry blackberry pic but you get the idea.

Remember my criteria?

  1. Under $200 - check. The dress is less than $150.
  2. In a summer color - bright yellow, check.
  3. Short length - check.
  4. Generally flattering on most body shapes - eh, check-ish enough.
  5. Only my MoHs get veto power. They liked it. Check!

And I’m DONE-zo.

The Bridesmaid Dress Liberation Movement (and then the buzzkill)

Woohoo! And so I finally emailed the girls with the ordering details. I was sooo super smiley faced when I sent it out… but now I am slightly nervous with the backorder situation and they won’t arrive on time or be canceled. The backorder date is less than a month away by now but that provides me little comfort. Who knows what will happen?

To be continued…

Did you take a risk with ordering out of stock bridesmaid dresses? Should I be a Nervous Nelly or a Calm Cathy?

I ordered my dresses from Ann Taylor (ordered one for myself, decided I liked it, then sent the info out to the girls). The color I chose was being phased out because of the season - it was a bit hairy getting all of the dresses in all of the sizes that we needed! A saving grace was that I wanted the girls to get different necklines (strapless, scoop, and v-neck were the options), so in the end everyone got a dress! Phew! and thank goodness for Ann Taylor’s great coupons, because everyone got their dresses for 40% off. I love a bargain!

The yellow looks just as good on your maid as it does on the model. That’s a huge victory in my book, congratulations!

Looove them! I originally wanted short and yellow, but my girls vetoed- we now have long and green and we’re doing flower sashes like that too!

I didn’t order out of stock- I tried to on Mod Cloth but their customer service wouldn’t let me lol. But my girls dresses don’t come in til August! (2 months before wedding)

My BM dresses aren’t coming until June, and I get married in July…I’ve decided not to worry about it until I have a reason to worry about it :P

@heather25: LOL. It *is* a cute dress (I love rosettes). But for me, 6 of them together for my BMs would be much. I think we were in Lord and Taylor when we found that one.
@Mrs. Pug: This is all real time. So yes it might happen but I hope it doesn’t!
@Miss Pudding: That’s a good attitude. I’m jumping on that bandwagon.
@krissybee: I feel your pain. Been looking since November (6 months) and eventually I just had to make a decision b/c I had to! Good luck!!

@heather25: I like the pink dress too, my little sister wore it to her Prom last weekend, hers was Jessica McClintock. I do agree with Mrs. Lobster, 6 of them together would be much.

I love the color! I’d stay relaxed, and if you have to find a back-up. J.Crew is usually a good stand-by, and they come in in about a week.
