Where to Moon?

May 19th, 2010 @ 6:40 pm by Mrs. Argyle

Minds out of the gutter people. I’m talking honeymoons here. No actual mooning.

Mr. A and I had one place, and one place only, on our minds when we started our search. Greece.

Why? I kid you not, I have loved the island of Santorini since 7th grade (just ask my Mom). I had to do a project for school, as part of our “school Olympics” in which my group represented the nation of Greece. Instantaneously I was over the moon for that island, and well, the entire country. There is seriously something so magical about those white buildings and blue roofs. No?

So, what was the problem? Greece is not cheap, in case you’re wondering. While Mr. A’s parents so graciously offered to pay, we couldn’t ask them to pay for a trip to Greece.

We did a bit of brainstorming and came up with three potential options.

Our criteria was: Somewhere neither of us have been; Somewhere warm; Somewhere outside of the hurricane area (see: Wedding in September).

1. Bora Bora: So this one could end up being expensive, too, but some friends of ours got great deals – so we thought we’d let the travel agent do some searching.

2. St. Lucia: We’ve both never been and have heard wonderful things.

3. Turks & Caicos: Same here – neither of us have been and thought it’d be a good spot to vacation

We left the hard work up to a travel agent. I first contacted my parents’ travel agent, hoping to have some luck. We did mention Greece as an option as well, but knew it would probably be out of our budget. And, we sort of left the door open to other similar vacation spots based on her recommendations. So what did we end up choosing? You’ll just have to wait and see.

What were your honeymoon requirements? Lots of action? Relaxing on the beach? Staying in the States?

Turks & Caicos, Bora Bora, and St. Lucia were all at the top of my list! But Bora Bora was sooo expensive and far away, and we’re getting married during hurricane season (mid-August through the end of October) so we decided on Kauai, Hawaii instead. Good luck with your search!

You can totally do Greece on a budget! I’ve been 3 times, am going back this fall, and will be getting married there eventually. Or, as an alternative, tour a couple islands but spend time on the Turkish coast. Turkey is cheaper and just as gorgeous, if not better in parts.

We did Greece as out honeymoon and dont regret one penny of it. and you can definately do it reasonably. Right now the Euro exchange rate is dropping, which makes it even more manageable!! It was paradise. Santorini especially. Trust me, look into it!!

We recently posted a honeymoon post as well. Come visit for ideas and/or comments. It IS the first vacation as husband and wife : ) No matter where you go, it will be blissful! Best of Luck!

Greece is amazing! and you can absolutely do it for a manageable price, especially with the Euro falling in our favor. It is absolute paradise and worth every penny. Santorini was our favorite

No matter where you go, it will be blissful as the first vacation as husband and wife. We just also posted on honeymoon decisions, check it out at http://www.sanebrideadvice.blogspot.com

Best of Luck!!

We wanted to go somewhere warm, where neither of us had been before. We also wanted it be somewhere we may not have time to get out to again.

Greece is totally affordable, especially now! I’m sure they would love tourists with the recent state of their economy.

My FI and I are going to Greece for our honeymoon. Santorini too, to be exact :)

Best of luck!

@Chicaquecanta: Hawaii is a good pick!

@Mrs. Joey: That was our thinking too.

@luckyduckluk: We actually booked our honeymoon 2 months ago - but we did lots of research. You’ll have to wait until tomo to see where we picked.

@connoCat: Aruba is gorgeous! Good call on being outside the “hurricane belt.”

I would be careful about going to Greece now. The reason the euro is falling is all because of Greece. It has such an unsustainable national debt that if it weren’t for the fact that it was part of the European Union, it would already be downgraded to 3rd world status.

@Jenny. Have you been to Greece? I would hardly call it third world. You should do a little research on their history and economy before you disparage it. It’s incredibly safe, as long as you stay away from Athens and Thessaloniki when people would be rioting.

I went to Greece last year and St. Lucia last month. I wouldn’t count Santorini out. We stayed at Astra Apartments. They serve you breakfast overlooking the scenery outdoors every morning. It is pure heaven. A friend of mine had her wedding there and I recommended it to another couple for their honeymoon after our stay. The location is perfect. I wouldn’t stay in Oia, Imerovigli is much much better, sunsets there are gorgeous. The flights are expensive, but otherwise it’s not that bad.

In St. Lucia I would highly recommend Ladera. Just check out the website, this place is lovely.

But to be honest, Santorini isn’t going to be all that much more, and with the way the Euro is looking now, it’s a great time to go. PM me if you want more info. I did all of our travel planning and am extremely thorough, I’d be happy to send you all my research.

I went to Greece with one of my girlfriends before starting law school, and it is not really that expensive (especially compared to the rest of Europe). Getting there costs a lot, but once you’re there? Very reasonable.

you should do greece. once you get there is is super cheap. the food and drinks are really cheap, especially compared to the rest of europe. I did Santorini on a college student’s budget, so I’m sure you could do it now!

Um, are you my split-apart? Santorini is my absolute DREAM. Well, Fiji and Bora Bora are also tied in a close second, but Greece is my dream. I fell in love when I saw Summer Lovers (starring Peter Gallagher and Daryl Hannah). I was way too young to be watching that movie, but whatev. I saw Greece for the first time and I’ve been hooked since. In fact, I love The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants simply for the scenes in Greece (OK, guilty - I love it for other reasons too…). Mamma Mia! just hammered it all home for me!

We also looked into St. Lucia, but the travel times to get to and from were worse than Hawaii. We’re currently leaning towards Maui, but after reading these responses, I’m going to check out Greece again. I figured they’d be really open to tourists - especially with their current economic situation.

Anyone know the “off” season? A few hotels I looked at when I was dreaming of a Greek honeymoon back in the day are closed starting in October-November. My wedding is 10 October (obviously).

Holy crap, you and I have similar taste in destinations! FI and I celebrated my earning my masters degree, our purchase of our first home, and our new engagement with a trip to Greece last summer; I’ve wanted to go to St. Lucia since 2006 when my coworker told me about her amazing honeymoon at Anse Chastanet, Turks & Caicos was definitely on our top 10 honeymoon spots list… and our actual honeymoon is booked for Moorea, which as you probably know is right next to Bora Bora. Such amazing beautiful relaxing beaches at all of those places, and each with their own kind of surround natural splendor. Can’t wait to see what you did pick; though, I don’t know that I’d book a trip to Greece right now with all the trouble they’re having there.

We are going to Greece and can’t wait. Bora Bora is awesome and so are Turks and Caicos! You’ll have a blast no matter where you go!

I highly recommend El Nido in the Philippines. It’s the most amazing place I’ve ever been, beautiful, tons of activities, gorgeous beaches, not crowded, and very eco friendly. It’s where my fi proposed!
