Ms Seahorse, Boston Age and Occupation: 25, Veterinary Jane-of-all-trades Fiancee's Age and Occupation: 36, former non-profit fundraiser in search of something better Engagement Date: October 17, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Fort Pond Lodge About Me: By day I'm a cat-wrangler, vet tech assistant, pet-sitter, receptionist, and pre-vet student, but the rest of the time, I'm a former-roller-derby girl turned dedicated-wedding planner. I love reading, writing, bicycles, animals, roller skating, and antique-y things of all sorts. I'm a vegetarian who likes spicy foods, while Fiancee Seahorse is a meat eater who does not like spices. We live outside Boston with our menagerie: a fifty pound dog, a one-eyed, seventeen-toed, toothless cat, and a perfectly put together cat who has a penchant for pooping near rather than in her litter box. In addition to planning our small lake-side wedding, we enjoy running around with the puppy, playing board games (Scrabble, anyone?), having little adventures, talking about how we should really clean the house more, and maintaining our little garden of vegetables and wedding flowers.
About Ms Seahorse

Desperately Seeking…

May 19th, 2010 @ 11:34 am by Ms Seahorse

… someone who knows how to get dressed.

Dear small but loyal readership,

As usual, I need your advice. I don’t know what to wear.

This is a problem that has long plagued me. I am known in certain circles for walking around in knee socks, slippers, underwear, and a sweatshirt, because I can’t figure out what pants to wear and clothes are overwhelming. I may have even video chatted with my former roommate to show her the awesomeness of this outfit. Okay, I was only wearing one sock. Even two socks were overwhelming.

So you can imagine what it’s like to try to figure out what to wear for my stupid wedding. Which isn’t stupid at all, except for the part where I have to wear nice clothes for it.

Outfit number one:

The dress for the ceremony. I already have the dress. It is very pretty, and very me, and I am not going to show it to you until after I get married, so there (um, except for the back, which you all called me a tease for yesterday :) ). I just need shoes, and that’s a whole different issue.

Outfit number two: the suit for the reception. See previous post on women in pants and a vest. Totally hot and snappy.

So Fancee and I went to Men’s Wearhouse to see what they had. Per a post I read on dressing your lesbian wedding party, the first question I asked was, “Have you ever fitted a woman for a suit?” The very small, very masculine 18 year old kid who worked there said that no, he hadn’t, but there’s always a first! He was incredibly awkward. He asked what I wanted a suit for, and I said my wedding. Awkward congratulations. Fancee pipes up, “To me! We’re getting married!” I’m not sure this affected the level of awkwardness – he was pretty much as uncomfortable as we could make him already.

So he starts to go to one part of the store and then is like, “Did you want to buy a suit?” When I say “maybe,” he starts to go to another part. When I make it clear I don’t want a jacket, he turns and starts walking somewhere else. He is clearly flustered. Then his boss steps in, this big guy who is less awkward but also clearly feels a little strange about the whole situation. Between the two of them they get me some pants and a vest and an enormous men’s button down shirt. I try it on (no pictures, I forgot, sorry!) and I look pretty good.

Well, as long as you imagine that everything fits.

So the whole deal – vest and pants – would cost about $110, and then need alterations. Some of the alterations just couldn’t be done, because my frame is so different than a man’s (as the Men’s Wearhouse guy said, “You have some things we don’t, and we have some things you don’t.” Uh, thanks Guy at Men’s Wearhouse for that nugget of wisdom). So it would look pretty nice and be pretty comfortable, but not be perfect.

The other option is to get an entire suit (well, vest and pants) custom made. I found someone on Etsy who has really nice looking stuff and got good reviews, but they do the entire process through the mail. For the whole thing in the fabric I want (pretty! Dark brown! Made for my frame!) it would cost about $260. You can check out their shop here, and see the reviews of their work here.

Suit from the shop! Not my suit, but I like it!

So, tell me what to do, oh faithful readership! Do I spend $110 plus alterations on something that doesn’t fit quite right but is pretty nice (dark gray with little stripes) from awkward people who don’t know how to deal with lesbians, but try? Or do I buy something for $260 that is custom made from friendly internet people who I will never actually meet?

Or do I show up to our reception in one sock and some underwear? I have to say, friends, it’s a pretty good look for me.

I am assuming from your post that you’ve given up on the dress idea? I’m a little sad because I thought you looked great in a few of those dresses.

Moving On……. I think you should rock the pants and vest with a shirt and lose the suit jacket from Men’s Wearhouse.

@Ms. Smuttynose: Oh she’s not giving it up! The pants and vest are for the reception, and it’s going to look so hot!
That’s a tough one. Between the two I’d give it a go with Etsy. It’s more money, but also more likely that you’ll get something specifically fitted to you and that you’ll wear again.
Would it be possible to find someone local to you that could tailor a suit to you?

The $260.00 option - IF you anticipate that the suit will become part of your regular dressing up/special occasions wardrobe. Provided the materials and construction are quality, and the cut isn’t something trendy or outrageous, the bespoke suit will last longer and make more appearances than a cheaper garment that doesn’t fit properly. Did they quote you on alterations? Depending on what would need to be done, you could easily wind up paying nearly as much as you would for the custom suit - and it still wouldn’t be just right. Not economically efficient.

What if you mixed sources? Find some sexy menswear-inspired pants (Limited, J Crew, Banana Republic, others) and get a vest made? Of course, it might not be a matchy-matchy combo, but could be a good option.

Out of those choices, custom for sure (unless it would completely break your budget). As an alternative, have you looked at places that sell women’s suits? I’m a lawyer, so have to wear them all the time, and you might have luck finding something that would fit you off the rack (Banana Republic, TeenFlo, Pink Tartan are all ideas).

I like what Elisabeth suggested… check Nordstrom if you can, since they have an awesome in-house alterations department. Custom is awesome, but you may not need to go that route if you try some stores that sell women’s suits… this could be a department store, or places like The Limited, possibly Express, Ann Taylor/Loft. If the thought of traipsing around looking for suits is intimidating, perhaps you could call ahead and save some time.

i’m gonna have to say the etsy option. this is an important outfit and the selection/purchase process should be comfortable so that you get to say exactly what you want without so much awkwardness. go for it!!

I think you should go with the Etsy idea as well, this is your one big special day with Fancee and you should do it up big time whoop whoop! Get something that is special and made just for you!

Have you tried women’s stores? Since vests are popular you will most likely be able to find a matching vest and pants cut to fit a woman. I just found this one at Express http://www.express.com/studio-stretch-vest-charcoal-26775-43.pro?Mft=vest&Mpper=3&Mpos=9&Mpg=SEARCH%2BNAV&Mrsaa=*&Mrsavf=SIZE_NAME&Mrsavf=category&Mrsavf=Color and it’s on sale for $29.99 plus 20% off plus it has matching pants which are also made for women. They have a few different vests at Express. There’S also this http://www.nyandcompany.com/nyco/browse/productDetailWithPicker.jsp?productId=prod1930002&categoryId=&productId=prod1930002&categoryId=&addFacet=SRCH%3Avest for something a little lighter.

I’m thinking that you should look for women’s suit separates which are going to be cheaper than a custom order and then find a killer seamstress to do any necessary alterations. Menswear inspired looks are very “in” for women right now, so you should’t be out of luck.

etsy all the way! i know its more expensive, but just think how great it will be at the end of it to have a custom made-to-fit-a-WOMAN (and not just any woman, but YOU!) suit for any and all future dressing up in nice clothes events.

Also, if you are interested in exploring other options, you might want to inquire of miss stripes where she was looking when she (albeit briefly) toyed with the idea of a lovely fitted suit instead of a dress for her own wedding.

I agree with Goldilocks! You should totally buy some suit pants from a woman’s suiting store (express, jcrew, the limited) and probably have the vest made for you. Sometimes these stores do have vests though! You should probably buy your shirt from express (or something like it) too. That way your clothes will fit your body better, and you will have a larger selection. I think it’s at least worth looking into.

Assuming that you can’t find a ready made woman’s vest, I’d find some pants that you like, then buy a second pair in the biggest size you can find and use the fabric to make a matching vest. I imagine it would be pretty simple to find a seamstress/tailor to do that (or even the Etsy seller)

As a chick who wears a suit to work every day, I know you can find a super cute women’s suit that will fit you just the way you want it to (I’m wearing one right now! ‘Cause I’m totally checking the ‘bee at work!). Ann Taylor and Nordstrom are my favorites; Ann Taylor is especially great at carrying separates made from the same material so you can mix styles and fits while still having a matchy-matchy suit.

Good luck, you’re going to look great!

Completely agree with the others. They have some really nice stuff at places like express and banana republic that would probably just need to be hemmed. I’ve got a tiny frame but my butt and hips are very different than men’s so i’d be very skeptical that they could make something that looked crisp and clean and not like bag pants.

Between the two choices you bring forward, I’d say Etsy. And/or… are there not some nicer stores in your area you could find a woman’s suit at? Nordstrom/Bananna Rebublic/J. Crew/Saks, etc.
OR! I was watching a Say Yes to the Dress last night that I’d DVR’d and they featured a lesbian couple that came in both wanting suits. As it turns out one tried on a dress and loved it, so nixxed the suit idea. For the other, they only had one suit in the store for her to try on. But, they did have one of their in-house designers there and she drew up a sketch on the spot of a suit for her. She loved it and “bought it” without ever seeing it. … My point being, maybe you can inquire into a few bridal stores near you, especially designer run boutiques, to see if they could design a suit just for you?

You’ve got many hints up above, but I just wanted to put out there that Nordstrom’s offers free personal shopping, so I’d bet one of their consultants could work with you to put together a women’s suit (so it fits you well!)

Etsy!!! You will feel so much better in a suit that is made for YOUR body. I was going to suggest JCrew but I don’t see any vests on their site right now.
