I Bought My Dress!

May 20th, 2010 @ 8:48 am by Mrs. Sunrise

Yes indeed I did. I finally buckled down and made the big purchase. It is actually on its way to me as I type this. I am so excited, yet a little nervous. Why nervous? Well… of all the bridal shops and boutiques that I could have bought my beautiful dress from, where did I decide to go?

I Bought My Dress! : wedding minneapolis wedding dress Ebay Lo ebay_lo

That’s right. Good ol’ eBay! A bridal shop in San Francisco had my dream dress listed in one of their auctions for $300 cheaper than what the folks at my local wedding shop were trying to charge me. It’s guaranteed authentic (and not some knock-off sewn in China) and it’s brand-new with tags! I just couldn’t pass it up. That’s an extra $300 that I can use towards other wedding “must-haves” like a photobooth. Hehe. On top of the already super-reduced price, the seller offered FREE shipping. You can’t beat that! The nice lady at my local wedding shop told me that I would not find my dress anywhere for cheaper because they get it straight from the manufacturer. Boy was she wrong!

But I was still a little skeptical since it is eBay and all.

There are some shady-ass people up on there! So I talked to Mr. S about it and of course he was no help. He used the infamous “it’s up to you” line. Ugh. So I called upon my sisters, Maid of Honor C and Bridesmaid N. They quickly got down to business and asked me a ton of questions regarding the seller’s reputation and feedback, return policy, etc. and then they both gave me the green light. Plus, I remember that Mrs. Coconut bought her dress off of eBay too and was successful, so I’m being optimistic.

I made the purchase, checked out through PayPal and drained the checking account. And now my absolutely wonderful, beautiful, dream dress is on its way to me. Believe me, I am going to check every inch of that dress for flaws. But as of now, I’m in high spirits and I can’t wait to twirl round and round in my dress again. It’s happening folks… I’m actually going to be a bride… in a big white dress. And by white, I mean ivory of course. haha. Ahhhh I’m ecstatic!

Did you buy your wedding dress online? How was your experience?

I heart eBay! I didn’t go that route for my wedding dress, but I’ve generally had amazing luck!

What’s wrong with the knockoff from China, though (especially considering most of our other products and clothes are already made there…)? I’m considering that EBay knockoff and people seem relatively happy with them…

I bought my dress from a post on Craigslist. It was only $300……$1000 in the bridal shop! I absolutely love my dress!

I bought my first dress on eBay and my second one from PreOwnedWeddingDresses.com! They were both exactly as described! YAY for another online dress bride :)

I bought my dress on eBay…it’s not a knockoff, it’s a sample from a real bridal store. I figured for $200 it was worth it & if I find a dress I like better, I’ll just sell this one.

I bought mine on Craigslist too. I guess there can be people out there trying to scam you, but I ended up with a beautiful never used dress. The girl had bought two and never even threaded the bodice to try it on. It was exactly what I wanted and much less.

I really never even considered buying anywhere other than online. There are so many people who buy two dresses these days or maybe call off the wedding and just want to get rid of it. I would never do it any other way.

@MissBoston: There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the knockoff from China. I almost went this route too but luckily I found an authentic for even cheaper than the “designer-inspired”. :)

Yay for eBay, it sounds pretty legit, but it’s always a good idea to be cautious. eBay has definitely gotten sketchier, even in the last year - but sometimes these kind of risks are what yield a bargain! I can’t wait to see your dress!

I bought mine online. It was from a retailer that didn’t have a store in my area so I’d never even tried it on. Yikes!

It was nerve wracking, but I love my dress and I only had to wait 6 days to get it!

I bought both my dresses on-line (the first time and now the second). Both were beautiful, and I really couldn’t have done better in the shop. I think I tried on hundreds of dresses the first time :). I think that there are two pointers you need to be successful on-line. First, if you have never put dresses on, schedule an appointment and try some. You need to know what looks great on your body, and also what you feel great in. Never let a consultant steer you towards a certain type of dress, just put them all on. About ten in, you are going to know so much more about what you are looking for. Note where you want your waist on the dress and the shape of the dresses you like best. Then look for these in your on-line shopping. Secondly, buy your dress based on your favorite body feature. The majority of us aren’t size 0 models, but there is always something you love about your body. I am not particularly thin, but I have a very long waist. I chose a dress style that flatters this feature.

I did, I did! :) I got mine here on the good ol’ weddingbee classifieds. Although I was super nervous ordering it (what if it looks different in person?) it definitely paid off and I love my gown. Good luck! Can’t wait to see it!

I bought my dress from ebay from a woman who ordered the wrong size. I love it! She was great to work with too, she even had the option to return it if I didn’t like it–bridal shops don’t even have that!

Yay Congrats!! I purchased my dress for much less as well by asking the bridal shop if I could buy the sample!! It was about 3 sizes too big, but the seamstress did wonders and I saved about 50%!!

I didn’t buy my dress online, but I wish I had (I found them AFTER I made my purchase from the salon - boo!). The company was significantly cheaper, but I digress. Let’s see your dress!!

I am an EBay bride. I bought Casablanca 1904 from a lady who was closing her store. It was PERFECT! (Okay…I might have had a melt down…or two because I am 5′10″ and the dress isn’t made for a tall bride. However, by simply taking a pick up out and making it smaller I added about an inch of length.)
Instead of paying $1200 for my dress I paid $500.
And I gained a little peace of mind.
