It’s a Toss Up

May 21st, 2010 @ 5:18 pm by Mrs. Starfish

I’ve been going back and forth on whether or not we should include a bouquet toss. I have two sides on this.

It's a Toss Up : wedding newport reception 08bcan 034 08bcan-034

Pros: it’s fun, it’s traditional and it’s a great photo opportunity (like the ones of Mrs. Cupcake’s wedding).

Cons: some single girls don’t like doing it, I don’t like being the center of attention, and if we skip it, it means more dance time for everyone.

I think the bouquet toss depends on the crowd. We have a pretty young wedding guest list, which usually means more singles. I think some people would have fun with it. If I decide to go for it, I’ll definitely need a fun song. Right now I’ve been loving Beyonce’s Single Ladies. It’s pretty perfect.

If I skip the bouquet toss, I’m not really sure what to do with it. I’ve seen anniversary dances and bouquet dedications. But the main reason I’m leaning towards skipping the bouquet toss is to have more dance time, so these kind of defeat the purpose.

Are you doing a bouquet toss? If yes, what song are you using? If no, what are you doing with your bouquet?

I never like participating in the bouquet toss (YAY I DON’T HAVE TO ANYMORE!), but I always kind of enjoy that it happens, does that make sense?

I also really like All the Single Ladies as the song for it… I couldn’t do it, though; my mom and step-sister both did at their weddings last year and I had to pick something else. ;)

I’m having a tossing bouquet just because I don’t want to destroy mine. Do I have any idea what I’m doing with it afterward? Of course not. :p

I don’t like the bouquet toss — I’ve actually snuck away to avoid having to participate at the last couple weddings I’ve been to :) We nixed it for our wedding. Haven’t decided if we’ll do anything in it’s place.

One alternative that I’ve seen that I thought was kinda fun — was to make it for all women regardless of marital status and have either something of value tied to the bouquet, or just throw a handful of loose gift cards into the air. How’s that for incentive :)

I’m leaning against it….most of the women at my wedding will be either married or engaged to be married. Plus, I’ve always been embarrassed to stand out there waiting to be the lucky one to be married next….I’ve been doing that for like 20 years, no lie! and only once did I actually catch the bouquet. I stopped going out there :o( Anyway, I’m leaning toward giving it to my Mom’s as a “thank-you, I love you” gift.

okay….maybe it’s been more like 17 years that I’d been trying to catch the damned thing

We were supposed to do it, but I realized as we were leaving the reception that I had forgotten. Oops!
I took it home and it decorated my apartment as it dried out. Ultimately, I ended up trashing it because it did make sense to take it with me when I moved to England after the wedding.

Yay for fun pictures! :) I didn’t even bother with the “all single ladies” rule — I just told all the ladies to get out there, and it ended up being most of my girlfriends (probably 1/2 of which were either married or attached!). They didn’t care — they’re a competitive bunch and they wanted it no matter what :) The girl who caught it is married!

just a word of toss caution, careful if you have on a strapless heavy gown. My sister tossed her bouquet (similar to mrs. cupcake style) and her hands went up, the dress went down and her boobs popped out! i’m sure the photographer loved editing her film…

Ack - I got yelled at at my friend’s wedding last week. First by someone telling me that even though I was engaged I should go anyway so others would be motivated to join in. Then I got yelled at by a single friend to sit down, so I promised not to try to catch it except if it came straight at my face. Which it proceeded to do, until another friend reached out to intercept and accidentally smacked me in the face.

Bad bouquet karma! I already was thinking I’d skip the tradition for my wedding.

Definitely NOT tossing it. And no idea of what to do with it… maybe I’ll bring it to Church and leave it near the statue of the Holy Virgin.

I’ve never been to a wedding that didn’t have a bouquet toss, but I’ve learned here on WB that many people skip it. We’re doing one, and the song choice is Girls Just Wanna Have Fun (Cyndi Lauper).

As our wedding is small-ish (60), I’m going to make it “All the pretty ladies get up to catch the bouquet”, so that ALL the women at the party can get up. Can’t wait to see my 50 year old Aunty’s in the bouquet catching frenzy!

Dude, I don’t know why people have such an issue with the bouquet toss. I mean, I kind of get it, but for me, it’s just a fun little tradition. So yeah, we’re doing one. And I will be yelling, “Crawl for it, bitches!”

If anyone gets that reference, I’ll love you forever.

I’m not doing it, and I plan to just keep my bouquet for myself! Maybe I’ll have it preserved or something.

@Mrs. Spaniel: It does, I love watching, but I wouldnt actually want to be up there catching it.
@kamydoo: @Mrs. Cupcake: I like the idea to open it up to everyone, I think that would make it more fun! What songs did you use for that?
