About Mrs. Pin Cushion

The other day, I was sitting around having deep thoughts. And I thought to myself, “Self, why are their gender stereotypes? And why, self, do you and Mr. Self, fall right into those stereotypes?”

And while I had no real answers to those deep questions, it did get me thinking (less deeply, since I didn’t want to get a brain-strain too close to the wedding and all). Mr. PC and I really do fall surprising neatly into ’blue’ and ’pink’ categories:

Exhibit A
: Mr. PC is an engineer and uses microscopes and stuff, whereas I am a nurse (and get to use the awesomely named sphygmomanometer).

Manly Man, Meet Girly Girl : wedding oakland relationships 13 1

Exhibit B: Mr. PC has a great sense of direction, whereas I have none (and thus, need a GPS).

Manly Man, Meet Girly Girl : wedding oakland relationships 22 2

Exhibit C: Mr. PC is much more analytical, whereas I am more emotional (don’t look at me funny, I might start crying! Or laughing. Who knows.).

Manly Man, Meet Girly Girl : wedding oakland relationships 2a 2a

Exhibit D: Mr. PC could eat pizza all day every day, whereas I believe the food pyramid consists of chocolate cake, candy corn, and cookie dough.

Manly Man, Meet Girly Girl : wedding oakland relationships 32 3

Exhibit E: Mr. PC likes video games. A lot. Whereas I like sewing and crafting. (Or one might call it ’attempting to sew and to craft’. [But I call those people downers.])

Manly Man, Meet Girly Girl : wedding oakland relationships 5 5

Do you and your main squeeze fit into gender stereotypes, or any other stereotypes? Or do you break free, run wild and defy any labels?

My fiance and I aren’t so neatly seperated. He sews, cooks, and has a much more artistic mind. I am less emotional etc. but I am also a lit major so not super masculine. I think defying gender roles isn’t about women trying to be the traaditional masculine or men trying to be what was traditionally feminine but about people realizing that that is a false binary and feeling free to fall whereever they may along the spectrum.

Interesting topic! Now that I think about it, we dont fall into gender roles. We just kind of are ourselves. He’s a teacher, Im a lawyer. Also, Im not very emotional at all. He says im just a teddy bear hiding under bricks. I drink beer, where he doesnt, and my sense of direction is amazing!!!! My brother calls me a walking GPS and comes to me to find out different routes to new places. I tend to be the more confrontational, foul mouthed one, where is he is more calm, and quiet. Hmmm…maybe its because I grew up with boys so its hard for me to fit the female stereotypical models.

We defy the labels. He’s a boyish boy with a few non-traditional traits and I’m a pretty extreme tomboy in most respects. Basically, our apartment is what would happen if two fifteen year old boys lived together and liked to play showtunes. We have a lot of fun together except that we root for rival football teams. The other major downside is that the place is a total mess.

i like your side by side comparisons :)

i think mr. sew and i weave back and forth between stereotypes, so for a lot of things there is no line for us. for example, we both like to play videogames and we both like to sew. i guess that makes us androgynous!

Yep! Sadly. LOL I feel like I’m setting women’s lib back a few decades by actually liking the idea of being a girly girl homemaker.

Except my fiance also uses a sphygmomanometer, it’s just not purple. =)

@MJogan: I should probably also mention that he sews. . . surgical stitching really does keep the stuffing in him comforter. LOL But I don’t think that’s crossing and gender lines.

Hells yes! He is the macho-est macho man and I’m admittedly very girly!

FI and I are a little strange. Okay, a lot strange, but only a little strange in this sense:

FI likes to cook and organize, knows nothing about cars, and enjoys interior decorating. I am cluttered (but still know where everything is!) and love cars (including doing some small maintenance myself).

But we are both engineers. We both love fantasy/sci-fi books. We both like to craft. And where we do fall into stereotypes: FI loves football and basketball. I love designer purses.

@Entangled: Your apt sounds awesome! 15 year old boys and show tunes!
@Miss Sewing: You guys definitely make a great team, as we’ve all seen in your posts. Maybe androgyny is the way to go!?

We’re like you guys. He’s the most masculine man i’ve ever known and although I’m not super girly compared to HIM I’m extremely feminine, lol.

Well I’m a nurse too (wooo hooo) and my fiance is an accountant, so pretty stereotypical. But he is an amazing cook and I can barely boil water. I also change my own tires and oil and he wouldn’t even be able to tell you where the oil goes!

He’s a numbers/money kind of dude. I’m a word girl. But he’s the cooker (if he didn’t, we would live on takeout and pizza).

He’s definitely a “Guy” in terms of gender stereotypes (never seen him cry, obsessed with sports, good at math and works in business) but I’m kind of a guy too (minus emotional stuff)

My fiance and I are a mix between stereotypes, and not fitting into them. For example, while his career (mechanic) puts him into the “boy” category, I am a scientist. Which traditionally is also in the “boy” category.
And he enjoys chick flicks more than I do.
He cooks, I bake. He’s better at sewing buttons back on, but I can do the rest of the sewing. I think overall, we are a pretty good mix.

We line up with some of these stereotypes, but “defy” others. Examples of our defiance:

-He was ready for commitment/marriage before me…he had to “wait” on me to be ready.
-I have a really good sense of direction, and his is terrible. I always navigate on car trips and if I don’t, we inevitably get lost.
-He’s good at sewing, but I don’t know what to do with a needle and thread (this may be because he’s an aspiring surgeon, though…)

Why is being a nurse and using a spyhgma… whatever “girly” but a doctor using the same tool would be seen as “manly?”

All teachers used to be men, but now it’s primarily women. Pink used to be the color for boys and you’d never put a baby girl in pink. And why is cooking “women’s work” but so many top, respected chefs are men? Seriously, WTF!

With us… I just do what I do (which includes some video games and liking to research/analyze things for the best option and bake but just because the end result is something sweet to eat) and he does what he does (way more video games, and crying sometimes, and math I don’t even want to understand and a lot of our cooking).

(And why are girly and manly opposites, it should be boyly and girly or womanly and manly. Just another way women are subverted in tiny ways during everyday language. I hate the phrase throw like a girl, because it makes no sense. I’m female and throw perfectly well, thank you!)

Cute post!! love the pics! I’d say my guy and I also fit pretty neatly into the gender molds. Although, we also have tons in common personality-wise. We’re really very similar people.

@kirabee: My personal favorite work is “Plate tectonics” (it’s just so fun to say!)

@Amber: It’s sad that the nurse/doctor stereotype is still true. Unfortunately, 99% of nurses I know are female, and the majority of doctors are male (though it is changing, thank goodness). I don’t understand the male chef thing either! And I had originally named it “Manly man meet womanly woman.” But girly girl is just more of a common phrase.

We’re definitely a good balance. Although, every now and then Mr. Seashell shakes his head at himself and mutters, “A little less E and a little more ESPN” when he catches himself doing something that makes him question his masculinity.
