Outsourcing: Program Fans

May 24th, 2010 @ 8:16 am by Ms Potato Chips

A while ago, I asked you if we should attempt to make program fans, despite New England’s notoriously fickle (read: cold and rainy) Junes. In the end, we decided to forge ahead with it! Here’s how I (and I use “I” loosely) did it:

1. I found a template for program fans here. I chose a shape and used a very advanced computer program called Microsoft Word to type in the information. I used two classy looking (free) fonts from Dafont: “Jane Austen” and “Summertime”. And yes, I chose those fonts primarily because I liked their names.

2. With the Word file in hand (or in flash drive), I headed to my crafty mom and explained the idea: print the front on white card stock, print a back on patterned card stock, stick the whole thing together on a wooden ice cream spoon. I should explain that my mom loves this kind of stuff and I was not forcing projects on her, I promise.

3. I left her house with plans to work on them together later. The next day she called and said my aunt had come over, they had decided to go ahead and do the fans themselves, including hand-painting a design on each of the fans, tying a coordinating ribbon on them, and assembling them in faux-Nantucket baskets similarly adorned with coordinating ribbon.

They used an X-Acto knife to cut the templates from the card stock, which sounds tedious.

Apologies for the blurred personal info and out-of-focus shots, but I wanted to show the fancy fonts (my sole contribution) and their meticulous handiwork.

I love the different patterns on the back! So summery and fun.

Voila. Where would I be without my mom and aunts? Nowhere. Or, more precisely, with a hastily folded piece of construction paper as a program.

@AnamCara: Cheers for Elizabeths and Davids!!
@Miss Trail Mix: I know, we are shameless!
@Kate: They used a pad of scrap booking paper from Michael’s craft store. It was a little lighter than regular card stock so I guess they put in a hidden middle layer as well so the fans wouldn’t flop around! The front/white is regular cardstock. The scrap booking paper comes already mixed in packs so we just picked the patterns and colors we liked.

You are very lucky to have your ma & aunt! (MY crafty MIL and our BMs & GMs really came through with crafting for us! My BFF BM did all of the bouquets and bouts, and my MIL sewed 6 clutches!) These turned out beautifully! I am happy with our simple programs, but these are really something –I love how they coordinate with the ribbon and each other.
