About Mrs. Hamster

Sit Here. Eat Now.

May 25th, 2010 @ 11:16 am by Mrs. Hamster

“Sit. Eat.”

The above is an oft-heard expression at Hammy family gatherings. Sometimes the “Sit” part is omitted, but the “Eat” is always present. When it came time to make our menus, I had this “crazy” idea (I know, it’s wild) of combining the menus and place cards into one. Here’s the finished result:

Sit Here. Eat Now. : wedding menus nyc Menus0 menus+0

Personalized Menus!

Making personalized menus was surprisingly not time-consuming, thanks to a function called mail merge within my first love, Microsoft Office.

You basically need one menu design (or form letter, document, whathaveyou) and a list of your guests’ names. You mail merge those babies together, and voila - personalized menus. Pretty neat, huh?

I printed out the merged menus onto cream paper (or “Baronial Ivory” if you want to get all hoity toity. Whatever) and paper-cut and mounted them on navy cardstock. Or rather, my mom did, as part two of our Mother’s Day festivities. Sorry, mom (again). I’m pretty happy with the result - menus and place cards in one - color me efficient!

Are you making menus? Any tips to share?

I was actually looking on etsy yesterday for menus when it dawned on me that I know how to cut paper and I know how to use a computer so why not make it myself? I also wanted to seating cards in addition to escort cards but this would be perfect. However, what do you do with that person who responds to the and guest with “guest” instead of the person’s name?

I was looking at your menu and noticed it gives them entree choices. Are you having a buffet?

I saw David Tutera suggest this on an episode of My Fair Wedding and fell in love with the idea. Seeing yours come out so gorgeously makes me really excited to try it!

Also you should post a tutorial for us, er, non-savvy Word people.

oo i really like this idea. Me and Mail merge don’t always get along, so we broke up, but I might be willing to get back together long enough for this project

Love the title and definitely hear the Sit. Eat. NOW! directions all the time. It can be funny and also intimidating! Love the your guests will receive personalized menus though.

I initially made them - it was real simple and I just made sure I got the pape size the dimension I wanted, and added my logo/monogram. I didn’t get to print them as when I had my final meeting, my caterer offered to do it for us - figured why say now, it saves me time in cutting paper and using all my printer ink. And frankly, at the end of the day, most all of them *will* end up in the trash, so at least I won’t feel like I made the effort for nothing….

Our family meals always start with “Sit. Eat.” and then are followed with “Eat more!” :)

@Hola13: We were lucky enough that those with guests put the guest’s name on the RSVP card, but if they hadn’t, we would have given them a call to find out the name :)

@RumbleBee: Nope, just two entree choices (with a silent vegetarian option) that they could choose between at that time

@EquiBee: @Hola13: The font I used for the names is Beautiful ES and Beautiful Caps ES, which is available on Fontstock.net

@Miss Jellyfish: @LoriLori: I will post a tutorial after the craziness of this upcoming wedding weekend calms down! :)

@Mrs. D Kennedy: I left off the table number because the menus will at each person’s place setting. So by the time they see it, they will have already found their table :)

@ktisthatbees: Yes, mail merge and I definitely have a tempestuous relationship as well!
