About Mrs. Octopus

Dog Owners, Please Advise!

May 25th, 2010 @ 7:00 pm by Mrs. Octopus

I have a wedding dilemma. It is dog-related.

Okay, so here are the basics of the situation. As I’ve mentioned before, we are basically having a mini-destination wedding; neither Mr. Octopus and I, nor almost any of our friends and family live in Pittsburgh. Mr. Octopus and I have complicated travel plans for the week of the wedding: on the Wednesday before, we’re taking a one-way flight from Boston to my hometown in upstate New York, then driving in a big caravan of family down to Pittsburgh. Then, the Monday after, we’re taking another one-way flight from Pittsburgh back to Boston. I’m also expecting that those few days leading up to the wedding will be very busy, filled with lots and lots of errands to run, things to do, and people to see.

So here’s the dilemma: do we bring Daffodil to Pittsburgh with us, or do we put her in a kennel?

There are valid arguments for both sides.

My mom is advocating for kenneling her, because bringing her with us would add a whole new “something that has to be worried about” factor. We’d have to stuff her fat self into her carrying case and bring her on the plane with us, then, on the same day, load her into the car for the five-hour drive to the Burgh. In that Wednesday-to-Saturday stretch of errands and craziness, we’d also have to schedule “making sure Daffodil goes out every five hours or so” into the daily to-do list. And, finally, bringing her would be really expensive. Those bastard airlines charge an insanely obnoxious price to carry a dog onto the plane and stow her under the seat. Like, the price of an actual human being’s ticket to sit IN a seat. Also, our hotel allows dogs, but charges a $100 non-refundable fee to accommodate them. Overall, it would almost certainly be pricier than kenneling her.

I, on the other hand, am feeling strongly that I want her to come with us. I’ve told you before that I am a Crazy Dog Lady. I LOVE Daffodil. LOOOOVVVVEEEE her. Mr. Octopus is similarly crazy about her. We really think of her as a family member. So my thought process goes, yes, we’d have to do all that traveling with her, which is annoying for us, but Daff is a champ traveler. She goes in her carrying case with no complaint, snoozes for the whole plane ride, and LOVES to ride in the car. So, it’s really not that big of a deal.

THERE ARE A LOT OF INCREDIBLY EXCITING THINGS TO SEE OUT THE WINDOW!

And, yes, having her there will be one more thing that we have to worry about while we’re in Pittsburgh. But the thought of putting her in a kennel for almost a week makes me really sad! In my experience, no matter how nice a kennel and its staff is, the dogs have to spend hours and hours and hours in a crate, with not a whole lot of interaction with people. Daffodil, like most French bulldogs, is totally a companionship-oriented pet—she’s a MAJOR lapdog. Her favorite hobby in the whole world is cuddling.

There are also a number of photos of me nap-snuggling with Daffodil, but I’m a really embarrassing sleeper, so they will not be hitting the Internet.

Even Mom Octopus, an avowed animal non-lover, fell for Daffodil’s cuddly tricks.

Because I am a Crazy Dog Lady, I most definitely think that my dog has emotions, and knowing that she is stressed and scared because she’s in a strange place, sitting by herself in a crate, without her people, will make me feel really bad. I think I’d feel worse about that than I would about having to fit in several daily walks during the wedding week. Also, traveling with her will be expensive for sure, but kennels ain’t cheap either. I feel like I’d rather pay a bunch of money to have my dog with me than to put her somewhere else.

Plus, if she comes with us, then she could be in a few quick wedding photos, like so!

(Note: I first made the mistake of Googling “bride dog” instead of “bride WITH HER dog” and LOLed in terror at the results…)

Without a doubt, this is the creepiest thing the Internet has offered up to me this week.

So, practically, I understand why it doesn’t make sense for Daffodil to accompany us on our wedding week. Emotionally? I really, really, really want to bring her.

Crazy Dog Ladies of the world, what would you do in this situation?

I would honestly leave her home. You’ll be pretty busy the week of the wedding and I think having the dog there would be difficult. Also, even though you say your dog travels well I always think that it is still somewhat stressful for pets to travel. I think the dog would do better at a kennel, if it is the type of kennel where she can run around a lot and play with other dogs and people.

Tough call, but I will probably board my dog. Can you find a boarding place where they are out most of the time? If you are in Boston, I’ve heard good things about Tail Waggerz, in Newton (http://www.tailwaggerzpetcare.com/)

However, I do LOVE those dog pictures, and if Daffodil is a good traveler, maybe it wouldn’t be that big of a deal? Maybe family members could take turns walking her for you while you are running errands?

I’m in the same boat as you, except the venue is 1 hour away from home, not a mini destination. I can’t bear to imagine even leaving my doggie at home, all crated up, while we are out celebrating. I vote to bring the dog with you, because that experience and having her in your photos are priceless.

Hi! I had the same situation for our wedding, We headed to Monterey for the weekend for our wedding and since my family was with us we chose to leave my pups in a Kennel with my parents two pups as well.

I will never do it again!

Even though they were with ‘family’ it stressed them out so bad that when we picked them up our eldest had stress colitis and [this is really gross] it cause him to have really bad blood diarrhea for over a week! It was awful.

I’d bring her - I’d rather be happy with her there and be a little inconvenienced than worry about her at home without me - but that’s just me! I’m an animal nut! BTW - is Daffodil a boston terrier?

I feel your doggy dilemma.. Have you researched dog kennels that fit under the airplane seat? Your dog may not fit in that teeny kennel.. I think airline regulations require the dog be able to stand up and turn around, and the dog kennel that is carryon is something like 14″ high so you may not be able to bring her with you :(

Aww, love the photos! She’s such a cutie!
It’s totally a personal decision, but my dogs are so great for my mental and emotional well-being - I think having them for a snuggle the week before the wedding would help me a lot, especially dealing with all the high emotions and stress of getting things done in the run up to the big day. If she’s a good traveller and is happy to just flop in someone’s lap, I’d probably bring her. But then again, I’ve been labeled a crazy dog lady myself, so take my advice with a grain of salt :)

Oh and the Kennel was very highly rated (walks and play time) and housed in our Vet office with an acre of land for fun runs . . .

I still feel bad for my furbabies when I think about it :(

I would probably take her but I too am a crazy dog lady and I look at my dogs as my furry children. Thankfully we’re getting married just 2 hours away at a family home so we’re taking ours with us!

I would totally bring her, but I’m a Crazy Dog Lady too, and I can barely survive a day without my furbabies! We’re going to have to kennel them on the day of the wedding (almost everyone is staying in the hotel next to our venue, so no one will be able to watch them) and I’m pretty bummed about even having to do that!

Plus, I totally agree with @wee_spud that having my dogs with me would be a total stress reliever!

Both FH and I are dog people - we have 2 dogs and we NEVER kennel them. The negatives sotries out weigh the positive and we don’t want to have a story…HOWEVER…we do love to travel and we travel a lot. We found a great gal that house-sits..Would you consider having a house-sitter watch Daffodil?

Do you have a Petsmart with a pet hotel in it near you? We left our dog at thet pet hotel the day of our wedding and picked her up the next morning before my parents took her for our honeymoon (mainly because she needs pills at a certain time). The pet hotel was super nice, she had her own room with a chew toy newspaper, bed, food, etc. They gave her the meds she needed, they had doggie play time and other things for them to do. It was way cheaper than a kennel too.

I have two fur-babies that I love love love!

However, you’re going to be busy and not able to spend time with her, plus traveling is stressful to both dogs and people, so it’s going to be not fun for everyone involved.

Leave her at home - it would probably be the best thing for her.

Well I’d go for hidden option C if its at all possible: Find SOMEONE to leave her with rather than board her. I know this might be totally impossible because all your friends and family are going to the ‘burgh for your wedding… but if, say, you have a friend that isn’t quite close enough to be going but is an animal person and trustworthy? I’d do that.

Barring that, TAKE HER. Seriously. It will cost the same about to take her right? So if its not the money, its the “hassle”? You and me both know that you’ll love to have her with you! Is it REALLY going to be a hassle? I think 10 minutes to take her out to pee every 5 hours is way way way worth doggy kisses for a week. But I’m a fellow crazy dog lady… so thats just me :)

I’d totally vote for bringing her with you if it was a direct flight to Pitt. With the extra car ride? weeeellll….. Also, is she the type to freak out in a hotel situation? I have a very sensitive sheltie that hates being anywhere not home…to the point where I have problems getting her to go to the bathroom if it isn’t her backyard (big problem at agility trials!). Have you looked into a petsitter? Easier to find for small dogs like Daffodil, and offers you a situation more like home while you’re away. http://www.petsit.com/locate/

How about a pet sitter? I have found great pet sitters through Craigslist before (make sure to ask for references, and meet them and check out their place ahead of time).

They usually charge about $10/day or so, the dog gets to stay at their house, so it’s a much better option than a kennel (I’m against kennels too, poor things!)

I vote for either bringing her or find a trustworthy friend not going to your wedding to dog sit. In my opinion bringing her would cost about as much as kenneling, and the two of you wouldn’t be as stressed.

Or, maybe get a friend or coworker who’s not coming to the wedding to pet sit? You can always give them a bit of money for their trouble. If you find someone that already has a dog, is even better, since you’re not adding that much more work to their day to day lives.

I would bring her with you. We are getting married about a half hour away from home but we are staying the night before and the night of and also he will be staying with us. He will also be going on our honeymoon with us. He is a little different of a story, he can not be kenneled because he requires special care, because he was attacked a few years ago and has to be taken really good care of. We have three other dogs who won’t be coming with us, but his dad lives with us and will be watching them. As for the other dogs for the day of the wedding we will probably be hiring someone to come in and let them out and feed them and etc. I don’t think I could ever send any of my dogs to a kennel, but that is just me I am a huge animal lover too as you can already tell.
