Ms Seahorse's Picture
Ms Seahorse, Boston Age and Occupation: 25, Veterinary Jane-of-all-trades Fiancee's Age and Occupation: 36, former non-profit fundraiser in search of something better Engagement Date: October 17, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Fort Pond Lodge About Me: By day I'm a cat-wrangler, vet tech assistant, pet-sitter, receptionist, and pre-vet student, but the rest of the time, I'm a former-roller-derby girl turned dedicated-wedding planner. I love reading, writing, bicycles, animals, roller skating, and antique-y things of all sorts. I'm a vegetarian who likes spicy foods, while Fiancee Seahorse is a meat eater who does not like spices. We live outside Boston with our menagerie: a fifty pound dog, a one-eyed, seventeen-toed, toothless cat, and a perfectly put together cat who has a penchant for pooping near rather than in her litter box. In addition to planning our small lake-side wedding, we enjoy running around with the puppy, playing board games (Scrabble, anyone?), having little adventures, talking about how we should really clean the house more, and maintaining our little garden of vegetables and wedding flowers.
About Ms Seahorse

Get it? “T” is for take me? But I’m going to talk about tea? Oh I’m so clever I can hardly stand it, and I’m sure you can’t either.

So, tea. For the past several years I have been an herbal tea addict. You can only drink so many cups of coffee before you get jittery, and herbal tea comes in a nice variety of flavors and doesn’t give you the shakes. Plus it’s a nice warmth when you live somewhere without heat (thanks, Mom, for raising me at a steady temperature of 55 degrees). Anyway, you get the idea – I liked herbal tea. I drank coffee for that whole being awake-thing. I considered myself a coffee person with a healthy appreciation for tea.

And then Fancee ruined everything.

You see, she didn’t have coffee at her apartment. Once I started staying there (after date 3, in true lesbian fashion), we bought a French press and some coffee, but it wasn’t as good as the drip I made at home. She tolerated my coffee habit, but loved a good cup of Earl Grey. So I tried it, and I was hooked.

magnet on our refrigerator

We are definitely tea people, and even tea snobs. We like Earl Grey, Lady Grey, and PG Tips like whoa. I haven’t had coffee on any regular basis in two years now, and I’m not sure I’ll ever go back.

And not only do we just drink tea: she handed me a cup of tea at the walk on April 6, 2008; we went out for tea on our very first (5 hour, and unofficial) date after the walk; we went to a pretty little tea cafe for our first official date (the next day… a long wait); every day that we worked together we bought two venti cups of Earl Grey with two teabags from Starbucks before work; we went out for fancy tea after getting domestically partnered. I mean, we did lots of other things too, but tea has been something important for all this time.

So it seems fitting to incorporate our tea habit into our wedding.

We are getting married fairly early in the day (sometime between 9 and 10 AM), so we will have tea and coffee available first thing – and, of course, we’ll have a good variety of teas. On top of that, we are considering some tea-like favors. So here is what I’m thinking—tell me what you would like! Or similar ideas…

First, my mom and sister decided that some prints from my print class would be nice favors—possibly framed, possibly not. I can make a lot of them in a fairly short amount of time, and it’s fun work, and they do look nice framed. Anyway, my teacher was saying that someone in one of her previous classes had done a lot of work with empty tea bags, and they looked really nice. So I might try that.

Second, we might have a tea custom made and order loose tea in bulk, like an Earl Grey with hints of something else (TBD). Then we could package them in pretty little boxes (I love boxes!) or in pretty little teabags with pretty little tags that say something nice about getting married and thanks and all that. We could even do some bags that are coffee for all you crazy coffee folk (you know who you are).

What do you think? What would you want? If you’ve done this, are you doing some sort of themed gift/favor?

OOOH - I would LOVE the loose tea in a box/with a bag (can you tell I’m a fellow tea fiend??)

You guys are so cute ^^. I would definitely do your own blend of loose tea (what a great favor representing you two!). You must do a cute little tag! Have you seen the ‘tea’ mugs? Sereni-Tea, Creativi-Tea, Hones-Tea, etc. “Let’s celebrate Eterni-Tea together!” (I’m so corny *lol*).

For me, it’s a mocha in the morning. Add chocolate to anything and I’ll consume it.

Hello friend! I love tea, and I would love a tea favor. On another note, have you ever been to Crema Cafe in Harvard Square? They have a red rooibos tea latte with cinnamon and honey that is UNSANE. I squandered so much money on drinking them this winter.

I love tea, too! Mr. Spaniel and I actually bonded over a shared love of green tea before our first date. Unfortunately, I’ve gone to the dark side since starting grad school… only coffee supplies the kind of caffeine I need to get me through the day now. ;) I look forward to going back down to reasonable caffeine levels any day now…

Oh you two are adorable. I just want to hug you. I love tea too. I, too, drank coffee for the awake factor, but now I’ve found yerba mate, which gives you the boost, but no crash and no jitters. I’m now 100% tea.

We’re giving away personalized tea for part of our favors, too. So naturally I think your idea is brillz. :)

This is huge. I majorly dislike tea and you’re actually making me want to drink some. Don’t tell Mama Seashell. She’ll hold it over my head after years of my whining.

It’s been said, but this is so adorable. I love the idea of using tea as a favor, especially a custom blend. All the great pictures you posted made me think that you might consider something like minicards from Moo.com when you’re ready to package your favors. They would make fabulous little tags for teabags, or labels for a cute box of tea.

I like the custom tea idea. It seems like if you did the art, it would be from YOU rather than from BOTH of you. But with the custom flavor, the two of you could design one together, making it truly a joint gift.

I vote for the tea.. we are coffee connoisseurs…and we gave out 4oz bags of our favorite local coffee house blend! Everyone LOVED the wedding favors and there were none left, there might have even been some bartering going on to snag more!

A custom tea blend would be such a lovely and very personal gift, I am all for promoting tea over coffee as my friends know all too well (alas, a lost battle in Italy ;-)). We are having a tea-themed wedding too and were going to steal this packaging idea http://www.stylemepretty.com/2009/03/25/diy-project-tea-tins/ , in case it can be of inspiration to you. We also considered giving home-made tea-scented soy candles (green tea, chai, vanilla, earl grey/bergamot) but finally decided to give locally produced chocolate, a speciality of my city, as most of our guests will be coming from OTT and we wanted to gift them something local. We will be including some tea in the OTT bags and will be using tea chests to hold the escort cards (which will be tea bags in glassine envelopes, sealed with a sticker bearing the guest’s name and the tea blend matching the name of the table). After the cake, we will have an open tea-bar. We will also be having a “Mad Hatter’s tea party” themed party for our son, who will be turning one on the day of our wedding. Finally, we incorporated our love of tea (and its significance in our relationship over the years) in our monogram (a cup of tea with our initials inside the cup) which we used in our invites, together with the following haiku “Find the perfect blend, be patient and watch it bloom, love is just like tea”, and in our wedding website, in which we included a couple of tea related readings (including the amusing “A nice cup of tea” by George Orwell).

@Francesca - I LOVE all of your tea ideas! That sounds so cute! Please please post pictures of some of it somewhere, if you haven’t already. And if you have, where can I find it? I love the cup of tea with initials inside idea… I tried to do something like that in a printmaking class but it didn’t come out quite right…

o.k. so normally I stay far far away from Martha Stewart and all of her cu-razy DIY projects (seriously you must need a bachelors degree in crazy craftmaking to do some of her stuff) BUT I found the cutest tea favor idea one time and I’m totally doing this for my wedding. Ignore the ridiculously hard recipe for the cookies. You can make a simpler kind, but isn’t the bag/cookie in a cute box so amazing! you could put “Tea for Two, Enjoy!” on the tags.

I am trying to stand fast in my tea-hate… but I feel myself being sucked in… it’s so very English and Pride and Prejudice-ey and therefore neato…
