About Mrs. Hermit Crab

Back to Reality

May 25th, 2010 @ 10:44 am by Mrs. Hermit Crab

There is a teeny tiny detail that goes along with the invitations that I have to take a moment to mention…

I hate to admit it, but I totally had one of those “bride” moments when something seemed way more important than it really was. And what prompted this?

Yes, the stamp.

I was totally set on these lovelies:

I felt they are adorable, appropriate and would add just the right splash of color and whimsy. I am sure you can see where this is going, folks. In order those delicious stamps, I would need a 20 cents more. The closest stamp would be a postcard stamp ($.28). I would have to add one of these next to my little couple:

Well, I was not having it (though admittedly, the polar bear is adorable).

Then they offered me two wedding stamps: $.61 and $.44 which would be exactly the right amount. But did I like these stamps? No sir, that would be too easy.

(Side note: I didn’t notice right away, but the stamps in these pictures are totally outdated!)

I stood at the counter, staring at these two sets of stamps, wistfully at my king and queen, glaringly at my cake and rings, with the postman standing there watching me, I’m sure thinking that I was completely batty.

Finally, after a moment, I came to the realization that though I loved my envelopes, not too many people were actually going to even notice the stamp, and fewer still would remember it after they threw it away (gasp, the horror! They are going to save it forever, I know). Also, I could not believe the amount of time that I was spending simply thinking about a silly stamp! So, I bit the bullet, bought the wedding stamps, and left my little friends waving goodbye on the counter. I keep reminding myself that I save 8 whole cents an envelope! And I’m over it now… pretty much ;).

It’s OK though, I always have my faithful standby, the one that adorned our save the dates and our RSVP envelopes, and will eventually be on all our thank you cards:

So pretty and helps a good cause, too!

But now, all our little invites have flown the coop, wedding stamps and all!

Did you get caught up in a little detail and have to do a reality check? Did you get to use those adorable kings and queens? Actually, don’t tell me!

I wanted the kings and queens too, but it would have meant spending 20c too much on each stamp, so I went with the wedding cake. I’m using the kings/queens individually my thank you notes as a compromise (and you’re right - I’ve NEVER taken notice of the stamp when I’ve received wedding invitations!)

Yeah, we had the idea to hunt down vintage stamps on ebay, and then remembered the same thing you did: It is a stamp. Like three people will even notice that there was one.

(I tried this same argument with envelope liners, but Mr. Snow was firm on keeping them…lol.)

We used the king and queen stamps, but I think that’s only b/c Mr. Snow didn’t think to get a different stamp in another denomination. Now I’m wondering, “How much money did we waste overspending on postage???” Haha.

I’m telling myself now that I’m not allowed to care about the stamps.. Will that last by the time I have to send out the invitations? I hope so lol

Haha, oh, that polar bear stamp. I chuckled to myself so many times while preparing our save-the-dates because it just looked so silly on there.

seriously. Like word for word. I even called the cake stamp “too easy.” I guess we’re on the same wavelength!

I love the king and queen stamps! But we didn’t end up using them for our invitations. We just went with the regular wedding stamps too. But I REAAALLLY wanted custom stamps from zazzle!

I had planned on just doing a king or queen on each one. But then I found out I needed a regular and a .17 cent stamp on mine. I bit the bullet and got a king and queen to put on both. Was it a waste of money? Probably, but they looked adorable. But I didn’t have hundreds of invites to send out either.

I might be in the minority, but I adore the wedding stamps! I was so happy to find them because now I don’t feel the need to get Zazzle stamps. You know what they say though, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure :)

Ah the stamps…I just had to go zazzle. They’re hopelessly over-priced but I went with the “you only send out wedding invitations once” mentality. Admittedly, it was a bride moment.

I only have a handful of invite that I am going ot mail (I hand deliver all my church friends/local friends, my parent hand deliver local relatives), and I still had my debate on the few stamps that’s needed.

and btw, they have new Love stamps in April, purple pansies! and here’s the description from USPS:

On April 22, 2010, in Kansas City, Missouri, the Postal Service™ issued a 44–cent, Love: Pansies in a Basket commemorative stamp, designed by Derry Noyes of Washington, DC.

The 2010 Love: Pansies in a Basket stamp features the image of a white woven cart filled with deep and light purple pansies and green foliage. The floral design is a detail from a watercolor created by the late Dorothy Maienschein, an employee of Hallmark Cards, Inc. Introduced as a Mother’s Day card in 1939, Hallmark reissued the design as a friendship card in 1941. Since Hallmark began tracking sales in 1942, almost 30 million cards with this pansy cart design have been purchased; more than any card in history. The word “LOVE” adorns the left side of the stamp.

I thought about scouring eBay for about 30 seconds. Then the cake stamp was perfect, and it saved so much time and money!

@Emily L. I bounced over to your blog from your comment here, and I have to say that you’re a wonderful writer and would make an amazing Bee.

Amazingly enough this was one thing I was not bridezilla about. I guess I realize that they are going to get thrown out…..

@EmilyL — I had the same “too easy” thought re: using the Forever stamps for our response cards. Which is ridiculous, because a) DF is from Philadelphia, so the Liberty Bell is appropriate, and b) “Forever” is a nice thing to have on wedding-related correspondence. And they’re the correct amount and look nice if one were to arrange the suite and photograph them. Which I probably will do even though I am not a blogger, just to have a photo. But no one else will care.

I used the wedding stamps (but I had to use TWO bc of my stupid square envelopes) and I wasn’t crazy about them but there weren’t really any other options…The post office should really work on that!

I went the zazzle route via Miss Hamster’s tutorial for half of my stamps and then went cheapo on the other half (forever stamps & polar bears). 200 invites and 200 RSVP cards via zazzle was not feasible!

I am so thankful for this post! Ha, our reply cards are postcards but I am using the King/Queen of Hearts stamps anyway, even though they cost more! I just can’t see a Polar Bear stamp sent out in the middle of summer….I am writing it off as “only one wedding in my lifetime” expense and it lowers stress to get it done the way I want it!

@bluestuff: you just made my day! I’ve been sicky sicky bum bum for the past 3 days, but now I’m smiling. Thanks (oh and p.s. I am Emily L. not just a random fanatic. I just forgot to log on earlier!)
