Mrs. Hot Wings's Picture
Mrs. Hot Wings, Chicago/San Diego Age and Occupation: 28, Professor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 32, Instructor Engagement Date: December 20, 2008 Wedding Date: August 2010 Venue: Ocean View Villas/Jasmine Seafood Restaurant About Me: I am a psychology grad student living in Chicago and planning my wedding to a fellow psych grad student. I am a Sunny So-Cal bred gal who trudged across the country to follow her love of psychology and ended up finding a partner in the process. I am overly passionate about anything I involve myself with. I am an activist, a foodie, a reality TV watching junkie, an over-analyzer, a photography obsesser, and am utterly cheesy to the core. This is a story of what happens when a boy and a girl meet, fall in love over academic dorkiness, and a shared love for life. We (mostly I) are planning our semi-destination wedding in my hometown of San Diego. We are excited to bring our families and friends together from across our lifespans to celebrate our future in a grand 400+ person culturally blended affair!
About Mrs. Hot Wings

Our first wedding present came this weekend! Strange because we hadn’t even mailed our invitations when we received the gift, and the person who sent the gift didn’t receive a save the date. But that’s another story, saved for another post. Gifts are pretty exciting when they’re unexpected. We definitely appreciate this gift!

This is the box…

Bed, Bath and Beyond: I Crown Thee Type A : wedding registry san diego 15 IMG_3295

that held the pretty gift box…

Bed, Bath and Beyond: I Crown Thee Type A : wedding registry san diego 21 IMG_3293

which held the pretty cereal bowls we registered for.

If you ignore all the crazy clutter and mess on our coffee table, you’ll see the 4 white cereal bowls wrapped in bubble wrap on the right. That stack of wrapped bowls had a second wrapping of even larger bubble wrap! Then there was tissue paper around that. The bowls were in perfect condition, but look at the proportion of wrap to actual gift!

Part of me was extra happy about having more packaging and large boxes, because we’re in the midst of packing our goods and moving. The other part of me felt like Enemy #1 to Mother Earth.

So BB&B, I thus crown thee Type A. With this title comes all the goodness that is the security of knowing your products will survive their time with their middle person handler (i.e., UPS delivery person) and arrive safely in their final destination. Along with this incredible honor comes the heroic flaw, my friend. What’s with the intensity in the packaging?

At the end of the day, I’m happy about the Type A-ness. I prefer the overly intense. It’s more my style. I was recently at a shower where the bride opened a box and discovered a broken mug. On the other hand, I’m definitely worried about what our apartment is going to look like if people send lots of little gifts, and they all come in gigantic boxes with tons of packaging.

What’s the best way to handle all of this packaging?

I’ve got one that beats that…We recieved a 3′ x 2′ box from William Sonoma a few days ago (I measured it after we opened it bc I was so incredulous.) Inside that box was another box. Inside that box was an official, wrapped Willam Sonoma box. Inside that box was three air-filled bags surround tissue paper. Inside the tissue paper was…wait for it, wait for it…An ice cream scoop. Seriously. A 3′ x 2′ box for an ice cream scoop….I’m kind of starting to feel bad about my environmental impact!

We have a really big recyling center near our house that takes everything from glass, to plastic, to cardboard. We saved up bubble wrap and tissue paper in an empty plastic bin and flattened out the cardboard boxes. As soon as it began to overflow we would make a trip and recycle it all. I also reused some of the plain tissue from the boxes. A friend who was moving appreciated the larger boxes. Also, the packing peanuts from Macy’s dissolve under water because they are now made with corn products or something.

lol @Miss Trail Mix:

I liked Macy’s registry because we could opt for “Go Green” which means that we requested nothing be gift wrapped. Packaged properly for shipping yes, just no extra stuff.

Reuse! You’ll appreciate that free bubble wrap and tissue paper to move and store your items.

Recycling is the best end result for all that packaging, but it probably has some life in it yet. Do you know anyone who is an avid e-bay seller? They’re always looking for boxes, packing peanuts and bubble wrap. And they’ll usually come to you to get it. Worth a try.

I threw out all the boxes, not like we are going to return them, and kept the gift in the containers they came in. We’ll officially break them out and put them away after the wedding - which for me, is just days away…

we requested no gift wrap on our shipped gifts and for the most part, our guests were happy to oblige! even still, we received the most ridiculous wrapping from BBB! Pottery Barn and Williams Sonoma were much more efficient, sometimes even sending in the box that it came in, which we loved. we recycled everything else.

hm, that is certainly a lot of packaging. using it for moving or mailing packages to other folks would be helpful! seriously, i have a pile of shipping crap in my office that i use whenever i need to send something out.

Thats insane packaging! Our first wedding gift was a check almost two years before the wedding. So no tips on how to handle the packaging yet!

You could gather all of it and then post on FreeCycle or Craigslist to give away free moving/packaging material. Give them a second lease of life!

That’s nuts, but good that everything is arriving in-tact! My sister is getting married too and most of her dishes from Macy’s have arrived smashed! Boo for the environment, but at least you don’t have to return everything for whole dishes!

You know… We received a Le Crueset casserole dish from BBB and it came with a smashed lid. Boo. Wish our packager had been more Type A!!

When we went to exchange some wedding gifts, in the small talk with the lady at the register, we mentioned that we had SOOOOO much wrapping and SOOOO many boxes at home. Turns out, they always need more in the store. They asked us to bring in the wrapping with us next time! (This was at Macy’s, and I’m sure they’re not all so hard up for wrapping materials, but the associates at this store just went on and on about how the tissue they get is not good enough and how they would LOVE our crazy wrapping from our mailings.)

we got soooo many gigantic boxes, i felt so guilty. i think that crate & barrel was worse than BB and B.

i recycled all of the boxes but still felt bad about the environment. i had nowhere to store them to save for moving. now i will have to go buy boxes in august when me move. such a waste…

Oh yes, the packaging…you’ll get a ton! We recycled the boxes, brown packing paper, and tissue paper. We did end up using some of the boxes for our move. And yay for getting your first wedding gift!
